State Investigates Local Vet Following Botched Surgery Records Show Vets License Reinstated Following 2004 Suspension WCAU-TV updated 9:00 a.m. ET, Thurs., July. 17, 2008 A local veterinarian is being investigated by the state after a pet surgery that went wrong. Lu Ann Cahn and the NBC 10 Investigators found out its not the first time the vet has been in trouble. The vet in this case did admit to Cahn he made a mistake. It was the kind of mistake, the American Veterinary Medical Association calls highly unusual, checking to see if youre operating on a male or female cat. "He was very confused, very disorganized," Carolyn Czop said. Czop is talking about veterinarian Dr. Jerry Godfrey and said his mistake nearly cost her cats life. From the beginning Czop said things didnt seem right when she brought her two kittens to see him at Banfield the Pet Hospital in Fairless Hills. She also said she was told the kitten, Oreo, was a female. In May, she brought the cats back to the hospital to be declawed and neutered with one request. "I told them I dont want Dr. Godfrey touching my cats. I made an appointment on a day he was not going to be there," Czop said. But she said Godfrey was there and despite her hesitations she allowed the surgeries. At the time she didnt know about Godfreys history at his own private practice in Frazer. Records showed in 2004 Godfreys veterinary license was suspended for six months followed by two years probation. The veterinary licensing board said it was appalled by the doctors conduct, staffing his facility with non-certified employees, that he destroyed records, misled the public, all leading to the death of a dog in his hospitals care. His license was fully reinstated in 2007. Czop said she didnt know any of that on May 20 when she got the emergency call from Godfrey saying Oreo was in intensive care and that Oreo was a male cat. "He performed a female surgery on a male cat and basically cut his urethra to his bladder and he had to lose his left kidney," Czop said. Czop said another vet performed surgery to save her cats life and Godfrey went back to work at another Banfield hospital in Jenkintown. Czop said she called Banfields national headquarters in Portland, Oregon. "I called there three times, no one ever called me back," she said. When Cahn went to see Godfrey at his Frazer office he refused an on-camera interview but he admitted he made the mistake and that "it happens." He said he paid for his mistakes when his license was suspended and that he runs a good practice. Meanwhile, Banfield responded when NBC 10 called saying Godfrey was suspended from working at their hospitals until a peer review process is complete. A Banfield spokesperson called the incident "very unfortunate" and said the company will also pay for future medical care. Oreo appears to be making a good recovery. But his owner Czop said Banfield should have acted sooner. "I just wanted someone to acknowledge what happened. Give me back the money I spent and say theyre sorry," Czop said. NBC 10 was told the state is aware of the latest case involving Godfrey and is reviewing the complaint.

I cant say enough great things about Dr. Frost and her staff. They are simply wonderful! I have had quite the zoo at home (5 kitties and a dog currently!) and every one of them (past and present) has been a patient of Dr. Frost. And she has kept them healthy for years. :) We’ve gone to her before when she was at other vet offices prior to buying and running her own practice. Not only is she exceptionally knowledgeable and well informed on the latest treatments out there for various ailments, but she is tremendously thoughtful and considerate of your circumstances when choosing the right meds or possible treatments that will work not just for your pets, but also for you to administer them. I really love Dr. Frost and this vet office and am so happy that she now has her own practice. I can’t see myself ever going anywhere else.

We have been with this practice through 17 years, three moves, and 8 pets. It is now the BEST that it has ever been. We love Dr. Frost and are very happy with the changes she has made to the practice since she took over a few years ago. Dr. Frost is smart, thoughtful, compassionate, and dedicated. She never rushes us at appointments or on phone calls. She takes time to explain any health concerns or treatment options and to answer questions so we can make informed decisions on behalf of our pets. I also really like that she has taken the time to get to know our family - she knows what our family is like and does her best to help us find medical solutions that will work within that context. I feel that our pets receive top-notch care at Whitelands Animal Hospital.

This other review is a joke. My American Bulldog Sampson was with the Frazer Animal Hospital for 13 years. They took good care of me. At the age of 13 Sampson had cancer and had to be put down. Dr. Godfrey Came to my gym, so Sampson could have his last day at home. I was so impressed that Mr. Godfrey helped me find my new Bulldog and I could not be happier. So for one unhappy person comes 2000 happy ones, your in good hands with Dr. Godfrey.

I had used the same vet for years. When he sold the practice, someone suggested Whitelands, and I havent looked back even though it is a fair distance from my home. The quality of the care is excellent and everyone there cares about the patients as individuals. I always feel that my kitties are in good hands. I highly recommend both Dr. Frost and Dr. Gorman, as well as Phyllis and the rest of the staff!

I have been going to the practice since my dogs were puppies. My oldest one is almost 9. Dr. Frost has been great. She explains things and seems to really take an interest in the well being of the animals. They have incorporated dental into the practice now, which I really need to get mine in there for that. I must say that I do miss Phyllis. Phyllis if you read this, please get in touch with me.

Other Vet could not handle my dog when she was going blind with her eye problem. I could not make my dog to enter the other hospital. But Whitelands Animal Hospital staffs were able to cure my dogs problem and she is always willing to enter the door without forcing her. I think that tells you a lot about Whitelands Animal Hospital! Thank you!

I found Whitelands a few years ago when I moved to the area. Dr Frost and her staff have taken fantastic care of my two dogs. From emergency visits to preventative care they are thorough and love my animals as if they were their own. I wouldnt take my pets anywhere else.
