I did some online vet research before adopting our beagle from the Beagle Rescue of Southern Maryland. I decided that the Exton Vet Clinic in Exton, headed by veterinarian Shannon Stanek, looked like a promising place. A few days after we adopted our beagle, she started having accidents where urine would just dribble out and you could tell that she didn’t know it was going on. My wife took Merry (our beagle) to Stanek’s clinic in hopes of a diagnosis and treatment. Here’s what they did (directly from the receipt): Detailed Problem Exam: $47.25 Lab Urinalysis In House: $38.25 Ultrasound – Bladder For Cysto.: $41.25 Lab Anaerobic Culture & Sensitivity: $112.65 Total: $239.40 My wife was surprised initially because there was another “new” vet at the clinic (her name is eluding me and it’s not on the receipt) and we had heard nothing about her. Merry went through the testing and my wife said that things went okay. They said Merry had a UTI and a struvite stone, and prescribed her Science Diet S/d and Clavamox (a hefty $70 extra). The first bad thing I heard was that the vet prescribed Science Diet S/d BUT she didn’t know how much we should feed her and how often. I didn’t think it was acceptable to hear that from a doctor, would you? I did some calling around to see if the surrounding vets had cheaper prices for all of the items listed above and every one that I called had lower prices. I know this may differ for different services, but we just moved into a new house and finances are a little tight. I called them Tuesday July 21, 2009 and asked if they could have all of Merry’s records ready for me the next day. After being on hold for two minutes, the receptionist returned to the phone and said, “Yea, we can have it ready for you tomorrow.” When I drove to the Exton Vet Clinic on my lunch break the following day, I asked for the records and they presented me with a receipt of services that we had already received at the first appointment. A lady from the back came out and said, “Oh I’m not sure if anybody called you but [Merry’s] test came back negative.” I replied, “So does that mean she doesn’t have a stone? Her: “No I don’t know. We’d have to do another ultrasound to determine that.” Me: “Well didn’t you guys do an ultrasound last Friday?” Her: “That was just so that we could extract the urine properly.” Then she walked away and I said, “Why wouldn’t anyone have called me?” The receptionist apologized and didn’t know. I was a little annoyed at this point because I was trying to figure out what I had paid for. I told the receptionist that all she gave me was a receipt and that there were no results on the page. I also needed my previous veterinary records that we brought to them at the first appointment. The receptionist told me, “Oh the veterinarian is out to lunch now and she took the file with her to review.” I said, “I’m confused. I called yesterday to ask if the records could be ready for me and I was told they would be ready.” She was very apologetic and said that she would fax them to me later in the day. I was calm the whole time because I’m getting used to expecting this kind of thing from businesses these days. So here I am with no solid answers. I should also mention that they have an advertisement in front of the clinic for Science Diet. This isn’t too surprising, but it makes me uncomfortable that Science Diet S/d was prescribed to my dog without knowing how to administer the food. Should it even have been prescribed? Is there something better available? What does “the test came back negative” even mean if you can’t put it into context? Shouldn’t the people working there have a clue as to what is going on? Why was Dr. Stanek reviewing my file at lunch on the Wednesday after meeting with my wife and dog the Friday prior? I’m getting a new vet. If you choose to go to Shannon Stanek’s Exton Vet Clinic, I hope you have a better experience than I did.

I wish I could give this vet zero stars. I took my new adopted puppy to this vet because the location was convenient. I just adopted my puppy weeks ago from a shelter and I noticed worms in his feces. I called and they instantly made me an appointment. I went the next day. The place was very cute and comfortable. The girl at the front desk looked as though she was very young but was friendly. My first impression of Dr. Shannon was her complaining about her student loans being late, which I found a bit odd. We were taken into the exam room, where Dr. Shannon came in and told my puppy how cute he was repeatedly. I asked questions about him such as is his eyes being ok because they are red and have discharge coming from them consistently. My question was pushed off with her explaining "thats how they are", without even examining them. I also asked about his sutures that were still in for a month now and the area looked as though it was becoming red. Without her even examining the area, she reassured that it was fine. She did exam his ears and said they were surprisingly clean...That is about it. She gave me deworming medication and without explaining how to administer the medication. She administered his first lymes vaccination and explained since she is going away, he will be getting the booster late to work with her vacation. I left the office not knowing anymore about my puppy, but now knowing Dr. Shannon is from California, recently fell and hurt her ankle, is going on vacation to Australia, and her dad rode a motorcycles across the country. A week after this visit a highly recommended vet assessed my original questions to be accurate and all my concerns were mistreated. Im sure everyones experience can be different but Im not risking my puppies health at the Exton Vet Clinic any more.

My special kitty Gypsy was literally given a second chance at life thanks to Dr. Stanek. The previous vet I was using wouldnt see Gypsy without knocking her out because him and his staff labeled her as nasty, aggressive, mean, horrible, & will bite & scratch. These adjectives were actually written in her records. Gypsy has IBD and Dr. Stanek diagnosed her CRF that the previous vet misdiagnosed. I came to Dr. Stanek with Gypsy almost on her death bed. Under her care and treatments Gypsy bounced back and its now been almost a year since I thought I was going to lose her. Not only does Gypsy not hurt anyone when seen by Dr. Stanek she completely understood my cat was just scared, in pain & didnt understand why she felt the way she did. She spoke old grumpy cat & Gypsy behaved as well as a cat feeling so crappy would. Another thing I loved about Dr. Stanek is she actually listens to you & trusts your judgement of your own pet. Gypsy is the type of cat that needed to have a close family member in the room with her. Shes needy and panics easily. We calm her down just by being in the room talking to her.. Dr. Stanek has given my Gypsy the best care I have had in PA so far by a vet. Her methods may seem unorthodox or even unprofessional but when it comes to the care of the animals which is what it should be all about in her care its top notch. The vet who couldnt actually care for my cats or save them had all the bells and whistles but when it came to their medical needs he failed repeatedly. Dont judge a book by its cover. Dr. Stanek is one of the best vets Ive had the pleasure of knowing.
