This is the worst dental office I have ever had the misfortune of visiting. There is no sense of organization or professionalism to be found there. I had two visits, and both times I had to deal with completely unhelpful and hasty hygienists. I spend 90% of both visits (2-3 hours) waiting for the dentist to become available to work on my mouth. He carried on multiple personal conversations with employees for the duration of working on me. HE EVEN HAD A PERSONAL CELL PHONE CONVERSATION WHILE EXTRACTING TWO OF MY TEETH. He did all of this shamelessly and without any apology. When I returned to the office to complain, they kept me waiting for at least 15 minutes. During this wait, I saw multiple customers lied to by the staff. The customers were asking to speak to the dentist, who was in his office, but the customers were told that he was on vacation, out of the office. Finally when Dr. Smiley came out to talk to me, he avoided almost all responsibility for my bad experience, admitting only that he had been "very busy" that day. He even made up silly excuses for why he needed to leave the room, during my complaint, in order to talk privately with another employee about my complaints. This office is extremely scatter-brained and unprofessional, with family members working together who are only interested in watching out for each other and making excuses for the mistakes they make. The customer is the one who pays for their incompetency. My jaw permanently cracks with discomfort as a result of Dr. Smileys hasty and shoddy work. Contact me and I will personally convince you of why to NEVER VISIT SMILEY DENTAL ASSOCIATES.

I hardly ever write reviews about anything, but I felt moved to do so after my recent experience at Smiley. We had scheduled an appointment for my 3 year old daughter to have 2 cavities filled. We called over and over the day before to confirm the appointment, and were never able to reach anyone - just the generic voicemail. When we showed up at 8:45 AM for our 9:00 AM appointment (our daughter hadnt eaten since the night before, as we followed the pre-procedure instructions..), we signed in and sat down. 10 minutes later, they called me to the front desk to tell me that her Dentist wasnt there, and was actually off all week, but that another non-pediatric Dentist could perform the work. They were also going to change the numbing medication to something other than what had previously been discussed. My whole point in writing this is that the lack of communication on this whole ordeal is baffling to me. Very unprofessional. It seems they would have called first thing in the morning to let us know about the primary dentist being gone, or better yet, maybe even the week before? To top it off, they had a very nonchalant attitude about the whole situation. Anyone who has a kid (and both parents work) can understand our frustration. Sorry Smiley, but based on our experience, you get 2 thumbs down.

These people are hands down the WORST dentist office I have ever been too. They used to be in this old office off Charlotte Pike with decades old equipment. They have since moved into a new facility, but let me tell you, they are just as incompetent as ever before! Supremely rude staff, hygienists that are inept and probably dentist school rejects. The doctor himself left me on a chair in the middle of pulling my wisdom teeth - without gas, mind you - for no less than 15 minutes to take care of some unruly employees. I had a filling fall out and ended up with over $800 worth of medical bills from them - AND I HAVE INSURANCE. Good insurance and I know how it works. I would have had more if I didnt have the good sense to stop them from taking xrays I knew I didnt need and werent covered. Over a year later, they are still trying to get money from me, but cant tell me what exactly was charged. Also, I NEVER waited less than an hour for my appointment. It was consistently an hour to two hours before they would see me. Do yourself a favor and never go here.

7/3/2015 I scheduled an 11:00 appointment for my three year old twins. I was told to arrive early to fill out paper work, which I did. We arrived at 10:45am. The front desk receptionists were very professional and friendly. We were called back an hour in a half later which the hygienist took care of us right away. She was very hand zone and informative. After she completed cleaning their teeth, we sat for almost another hour, which different staff members were coming in the room getting different things. When the dentist finally came to see us, I was more than irritated. He sat down and started working not even introducing himself. I didn’t like the fact that it’s open for everyone to see what’s taking place and I also didn’t like the fact that they kept talking to one another for different reasons. They also talked about another individual case while they were working on my child. He was not informative but he did do well as far as making my children comfortable. I did not leave the dentist office until 1:35. It was a very long day.

Dr. Eric Oates is not the worst dentist I have ever used, but the experience Ive had at Smiley was lukewarm. Once I got a filling and it required a follow up visit because it wasnt done correctly the first time. Second, Dr. Oates is not good to treat a patient with implants. I recently had a loose abutment screw which results in a loose crown on the implant. Dr. Oates told me the implant itself was moving (untrue). Further, Dr. Oates refused to work on it. He suggest I go to a specialist (oral surgeon) to have the crown cut off the abutment, and the specialist said this is something a dentist needs to perform (I agree with the specialist). Finally, I consulted another dentist, and he repaired the abutment/crown without removing it! My new dentist simply tightened down my abutment/crown and now the implant is restored for only $50. Dr. Oates was suggesting a procedure that would have cost approximately $1000. Dr. Oates must be trained to work with implants in order to be a successful dentist in the 21st century.

I had an almost two hour wait for my appointment with them, to which they tried to tell me it was only for an x-ray despite having an appointment card filled out by them that said it was for a cleaning and x-ray which was what I was there for. They dragged feet the entire way giving total lackluster service and I left with a sense of disappointment with the place. If it was only that I wouldnt bother with posting, but now six months later after that visit, I get some harassing letters and calls about an outstanding balance, and found out this was also posted against my credit score to boot. Turns out they did not run my insurance at all despite having it on file. After putting up with their nonsense for over week, the total I owed them came down to five dollars of what they said was the co-pay difference that they get from that company even though my insurance company says different. At this point I just paid the five dollars to avoid dealing with them anymore. To put it simply: Do NOT go to Smiley!

Absolutely horrible!! I saw Dr Smiley years ago when he was at a different practice. He was hours late. He spent the entire time flirting with his assistant and gossiping about other staff. I had to go back 2 more times to have him fix the fillings, because I had air bubbles in two of them that went straight down to the nerve - SO PAINFUL! He had to fix one of them twice - the same filling, now THREE times! I ended up going to another dentist to finally get everything fixed properly. Then there were the billing errors - they told me I had to pay them and get reimbursed from my insurance. Stupidly, I did. Then THEY BILLED MY INSURANCE and got paid twice for the same procedure - and refused to refund my money! HORRIBLE HORRIBLE HORRIBLE!! DO NOT GO TO DR SMILEY!
