I woke up with a “crick in my neck”. With an acute issue bothering me I hoped a little HVLA would take care of it. I explained my acute problem. Dr. Paris immediately requested I get X-rays. I didn’t see any reason, and declined. I am not a chiropractor, but I did go to medical school and I did study manipulation, and I know that X-rays are only indicated if there is lack of improvement after 8 weeks of conservative treatment, or in the case of trauma, neurological deficits, cancer, osteoporosis or bone disease (these are the medical indications, but for professional diligence I looked it up and they are indeed the same recommendations from the American Chiropractic College of Radiology). I went back to my second appointment. Sadly, Dr. Paris did not ask how last week’s treatment worked for my neck pain at all (I guess she didn’t want to know I woke up with a worse headache the day after her adjustment but I was willing to try one more treatment to give it a fair go). Instead of inquiring about the quality or location of my pain, she spent the entire appointment trying to convince me to get X-rays. Despite my continued poignant arguments, she insisted. That it is the standard of care in chiropractic with new patients (false – why would the standard of care be to expose patients to unnecessary radiation without any indication, the oath I took as a medical professional was First Do No Harm). Gosh, I am a well-educated assertive lady, and I felt very uncomfortable being strong-armed into an unnecessary procedure. I can’t imagine how other more vulnerable people who are trusting of authority figures would do. Dr. Paris’ argument was that she might “find something” and cited examples of finding birth defects and tumors and the like on asymptomatic patients, and being able to treat them. This is irresponsible use of imaging, scores of evidence have shown that asymptomatic incidental findings on x-rays almost always lead to unnecessary health dollars spent. When I asked how X-ray’s would change the course of my personal treatment (because in medicine we only order a test if it will have an effect on patient care) she said that if she based on the findings she could increase frequency of visits – ie – with more incidental findings, she could bring me in more often to fix these ailments. To me this experience screams ethical compromise, and in researching the consumer complaint process for chiropractic care in Texas I came across an excerpt from an insurance auditor citing that most chiropractors rely on X-rays as an integral part of their business model – key word business (not health). “There are two main reasons why chiropractors take more x-rays than are medically necessary. One is easy money. It costs about 35¢ to buy an 8- x 10-inch film, for which they typically charge $40. Five separate regions so eleven x-ray films would net the chiropractor over $400 for just few minutes of work. Chiropractors also use x-ray examinations inappropriately for marketing purposes. Chiropractors who do this point to various things on the films that they interpret as (a) subluxations, (b) not enough spinal curvature, (c) too much spinal curvature, and/or (d) “spinal decay,” all of which supposedly call for long courses of adjustments with periodic x-ray re-checks to assess progress. In addition to wasting money, unnecessary x-rays entail unnecessary exposure to the risks of ionizing radiation.” So bottom line – is this office clean, professional, welcoming, high tech and in a pleasant location – Yes! But please, with any health care dollar you spend do your research, please advocate for yourself, and please consider asking good questions or finding a health care professional practicing evidence-based medicine.

I have been a patient of Dr. Paris for a few years now, and she and her staff are amazing. First of all, she is the first Chiropractor that I REALLY trust. She is very professional and takes x-rays, does thorough examinations, and really listens to me. Im also a nurse and I always feel like her treatments are based on actual science and evidence-based practice. She has also bent over backward to help me. I have gotten hurt twice in the time Ive been a patient, and not only does she fight with my insurance for me, she will do whatever it takes to squeeze me in when I just HAVE to come in right away, and she has given me a discount when I was in between jobs and lost my insurance. Also, the massage therapists that work there are excellent. The only thing I would have said is a negative was the sometimes limited hours, but they just got a second chiropractor there and extended their hours so now theres literally nothing bad I can say. Ill never go to another chiropractor for sure.

The staff is super nice and their main goal is to make it to where you feel better no matter if its a onetime visit or extended care and its all personalized to your specific condition. I would highly recommend Dr. Paris to anyone shes amazing! :)
