The total cost to micro chip and neuter our small dog (under 25 lbs) at S&S was $335.00 and yet I never allowed to speak to an actual VET, only the techs and receptionist were available for our questions and concerns. The final price was $40 higher from the quote I received 2 months ago. Which is interesting since they gave out coupons for $20 off both neuter and micro chipping at their open house last month. Apparently, they raised their prices to cover the cost of the "coupons". Aside from my issues with the bill and the vet"s lack of courtesy to actually speak to me, my dog seemed extremely traumatized when I picked him up from the vet. Additionally, they shaved off nearly 5 inches of hair, completely around his front leg, in order to establish an IV, which I thought was excessive. And lastly, upon discussing the procedure with the vet in advance she gave me the impression that my dog would be able to go on his walks within a day or two after surgery. But when I picked him up I was given after care instructions from a tech that states he must stay inside for 10 days. Knowing this in advance would have allowed me to plan better. I knew from previous visits that they were not the most affordable pet clinic, but they were conveniently located and seemed nice. Now I am looking for a new vet. Listed below are places nearby that I have called to compare prices for the same procedure: Bulverde/Bexar Vet: Neuter$90, Micro$45, Ecollar$5-10 ($145) StoneOak: Neuter$305, Micro$45, Ecollar$3 ($353) BlancoCrossing: Neuter$159, Micro$49.50, Ecollar$12.75 ($221.25) Family Pet: Neuter&Micro$397.44 Ecollar$20 ($417.44) Encino Park: Neuter$219, Micro$47.50, Ecollar$13 ($279.50) Smith & Shedd: Neuter$256, Micro$45+14.99, Ecollar$17.95 ($335)

Just want to say thanks to Dr. Lane Smith & crew for outstanding diagnostic acumen as well as a pleasant and professional team. Among our pets, we have an old Bishon Friese who has been with us for over 15 years. Hes a dear old pup... but has been plagued through the years with sensitive skin and allergies. Our old vet was (is) very good... but located far away (Affordable Pet Care on Basse Rd.) and he is on the verge of retiring. I knew the day would come when we switched to someone closer to our house. When Smith & Shedd Pet Hospital popped into our neighborhood, I took our dog in for a quick checkup because it was so convenient. Dr. Smith immediately suggested a new pharmacological treatment plan that quickly restored years of vigor to our pup and worked wonders for his skin condition. A few months later, (today) a surgery was required... (it was minor)... so we did a teeth cleaning as well to took care of both birds (so to speak) with one stone. The pricing, atmosphere and medical competency of the staff are excellent. I am happy to share this report along with my commendation of Dr. Smith & Co @ Smith & Shedd Family Pet Hospital.

I have taken a few weeks to calm down after a very upsetting experience; and I am going to try and state just the facts of a very upsetting experience. I have had a very good relationship with this vet clinic for over 2 years. I have trusted their recommendations, and always followed their guidance. Recently, I raised some concerns about a treatment plan...only to be met with anger. Not frustration...anger. I am perfectly within my rights to ask questions and gain more information on a proposed treatment plan for my dog. I was berated, and met with such....anger...that it actually scared my dog (who was sitting beside me). To say this shocked me is an understatement. There was never even an apology. There was just more talking trying to justify deplorable behavior. My trust in the professionalism of the practice is non-existent at this point, and we will not be returning. I cant say do not ever go to this practice, because we did have a good relationship at one point. I would say just...proceed cautiously, and dont be afraid to ask questions. You do have the right.

I cant say enough good things about Smith & Shedd. Weve been going to them since we moved to San Antonio and they have always gone above and beyond. From the front office staff to the vet techs to both Dr. Smith and Dr. Shedd-Garza, every employee at Smith & Shedd has been exceptionally kind and helpful. Even after moving across town, I still bring my pets here because I know that we will be well taken care of. In 2014 I trapped a badly injured feral cat and Smith & Shedd was more than happy to take her in and work with me while she was patched up and socialized, which took months of bringing her in nearly every week! Even now when I bring my other pets in, the vet techs and vets ask how shes doing. I really feel like a valued member here instead of just another customer. I had a rough situation with a pet recently, and Smith & Shedd once again went above and beyond. I cannot express how much I appreciate this practice and the people there. Thank you so much for all you have done for my family and continue to do!

As an owner of several large animal dogs and frequent trips to various vets over the years here in San Antonio, the fees at Smith and Shedd are basically the same as those I have paid elsewhere. One of my dogs had an emergency the day after Christmas and Dr. Lane Smith made it to the clinic with 10 minutes of our arrival. Meanwhile his (very experienced & knowledgeable) techs as well as a few others functioned as a well oil machine and began basic trauma life support. Dr. Smith has detected and rightly diagnosed all of my dogs various maladies as well as the curious and transient ones. I ask about fees at the time for labs and other possible charges at the time of service. Further, if there is a med available on line or elsewhere, I purchase it there first. Being proactive with healthcare for people and pets is a must in this economy - as well as getting second opinions.

I made my appointment a month in advance for my dog to have a tumor removed. I brought her in, and they gave me the rundown on the cost (Unbelievably expensive) but... I love my dog, and she needed the operation so I agreed. They were going to do her blood work, perform the operation, and as an added bonus, clip her nails. The doctor never showed up! They kept my dog without food and water in a kennel all day, and didnt feel the need to call me until late afternoon to tell me that they werent able to perform the operation, and they wanted to keep her overnight (which I would be charged for) Infuriated, I went and picked up my dog. They charged me $180 for the blood work, and needle disposal. They didnt even clip her nails. I will never return to this BUSINESS, and have made it my lifes work to steer any and everybody away from this shoddy establishment.

The staff at the front desk are always very friendly and accommodating both over the phone and in person! They truly try to do everything they can to work with your schedule. The techs sincerely care about your pets and always try to make them feel comfortable during any situation. They are also a very good resource of knowledge. And the doctors are amazing! Dr. Smith always takes the time to talk to you about your pets condition and is very personable and knowledgeable. No matter how busy they are, he never seems like hes trying to rush with the process. He always takes his time and answers any questions you may have. Even though we now live a little further from the clinic, we refuse to go anywhere else. It is definitely worth the drive for the quality care we receive here. Highly recommend!! You wont be disappointed!
