Ive been following all of the posts that are damning this clinic because a man claims that they didnt treat his dog before receiving payment. I was at the hospital that day and this is the TRUTH that this gentleman is failing to mention: 1. Animal Control brought BOTH of his dogs to the clinic that day after they had been fighting. I overheard his wife say that this wasn’t their first fight and that she had to lock their children in the broom closet so they could be safe. 2. An employee of the animal hospital went out to the animal control truck to talk with the animal control officer and assess the dogs. 3. The dog that died never came INTO the hospital. Likely because THEY SIGNED HIM OVER TO ANIMAL CONTROL TO BE EUTHANIZED. After they made him property of the city, his treatment choices were dictated by the CITY. I overheard an employee tell the animal control officer that if he was critical, the hospital would come out to the truck and euthanize him at no charge. That offer was declined. 4. A clinic employee did NOT deny treatment to either of the dogs; they said that they couldn’t add it to the balance of of this guys account because he had failed to make payments on his account. The “no check” comment was likely because of this or because he probably had bounced checks in the past. The fact that they had apparently let him make payments before is NOT something that most vet hospitals do. 5. How is the other dog? The one that they DID treat? I saw them bring him in on a stretcher. He could be treated because they apparently DID NOT SIGN HIM OVER TO THE CITY FOR EUTHANASIA like you did their other dog. I’m standing up here because they are wonderful at Portsmouth Animal Hospital. I use them because they saved my Riley (also a Pit Bull). I rushed him there one day after he had been hit by a car and they immediately came out to the car and brought him in, treated him and healed him. They didn’t mention payment or cost to me until AFTER he was stable. They also treat most of the animals at the Portsmouth Humane Society at no charge (guess what? They are mostly pit bulls!) Again, I’m sorry you this man lost his pet. But people need to know the whole story before they start spreading vicious lies.

Ive taken my two dogs as well as a handful of fosters here for the past several years. I started going here after my brothers own two pitbulls had escaped his yard, were hit by a vehicle, taken here by strangers, and were treated by one of the vets free of charge. Im really disappointed to see the recent reviews about the gentlemans dog who passed away while waiting for care, but I just wanted to show my support by leaving a review for the clinic -based on my own great experiences- to show that this is not the norm for Portsmouth Animal Hospital. Dr. Ligon, Dr. Harrell, and Dr. Smith are all amazing vets who genuinely seem to care about the animals. I have never been asked for payment up front in order to be seen. I pay with checks often with no issue. Ive also brought in pitbull fosters for treatment and witnessed absolutely no discrimination based on the breed. The vets have always seemed to be cost conscious and routinely offer more affordable options without me asking. Each staff member has always been welcoming towards me and my pets - even one of my dogs who isnt exactly the easiest animal to handle during vet visits. Due to a few health issues my pets/fosters have had, we are here regularly, and I cant say Ive had one really negative experience.

I love this place and will never take my dogs anywhere else. They are not "out to get your money." Quite the opposite actually. I adopted a 10 year old golden retriever named Rhett in November. A few days after I brought him home he started having seizures. The animal shelter conversed with the vet and confirmed that he had epilepsy. He started meds and is doing much better. In order to close the adoption we had to get him fixed (Dec 3rd). The staff were so good to him. And you could tell that this dog loved all of them. When it came time to get his staples removed, they found a hernia on his incision site. They offered to pay for the entire operation! We scheduled surgery (Jan 4th). When they started operating on him, they realized that instead of a hernia, it was actually a huge blood clot from his previous surgery (very common complication in senior dogs). They ended up making an even bigger incision, removed his scrotum, and were able to completely remove the clot! They still paid for what ended up being a $650 operation. They are all so kind and generous and they really care about the animals they see and their owners.

We have been bringing our fur babies here since we moved to the area in 2009. Dr. Harrell used to be our primary vet, and she was wonderful. She helped us through the difficult decisions when our cat was dying of cancer, and was very kind when the time came to let her go. We have recently started seeing Dr. Ligon, who is just amazing. I always leave feeling like my concerns have been heard and questions answered. I feel their prices are fair given the service and extent they go to to care for each animal. I also really appreciate the follow up phone call the next day, and the fact that the doctors will call you back when you have a concern. While they may not always tell you the price of different services up front, you can always ask before anything is done and they will give you an estimate and discuss your options. The staff is usually friendly, but like anywhere else, some visits are better than others. They are human, after all, and this has been improving too. Overall, I am very happy and will continue to bring my cats here.

I have been going to Casey Animal Hospital for 4 years now, I feel the prices of vaccinations are high, but the care they gave my pets has been great!. 1) When my dog was attacked by another dog we had to take her to an emergency center. The next day and 2 days later, they called to see how she was doing and was she in pain or have any other needs. 2) When my cat needed to be put to sleep they were completely compassionate had a room set up for us waiting and gave me time with her before and after she passed and gave me a mold of her paw. They then sent a card with a note that they made a donation to a pet humane society in her honor. 3) When my dog had whipworm (she was constantly trying to poo and when she did she had blood in her stool), they told me it was probably whipworm and to give a medication 24 hours to work before they do an expensive workup - and they were right. My only con is the high cost to keep my pets fully vaccinated and up to date.

I found a kitten under my house. He was 3 weeks old. The first vet I took him to completely ignored Echos sneezing, not doing anything for it. Dr. Ligon listened to everything I had to say and the techs and other staff helped so much. Every one who worked there, Im sure, poked their head in just to see my tiny, adorable Echo. It felt like home to me. Since hes so little every tiny change in his behavior, I freak out. Instead of making me come in just so I could ask questions, the receptionist (she was so nice!) took my message with tons of questions included and said theyd call back. They did. They answered all my questions and answered the ones I thought of on the phone. Id recommend PAH to any of my animal lover friends.
