DO NOT GO HERE - UNNECESSARY SURGERY COST ME $380 I went to the Community Veterinary Hospital, Inc. to have a stray cat spayed that we decided to take in. The practice required a screening exam, for which they told us the cat appeared to be pregnant already and we couldnt do any vaccinations until we had her spayed. This visit cost $130. We scheduled a spay 2-weeks later and was told it would be an additional $250. Dr. William A. Grant II was the one who attempted to perform the spay. We were told the cat was ready for pickup. After getting there, paying for services and receiving the cat, we were then told that the cat must have already been spayed. I asked why we just paid $250 and Dr. William A. Grant II became defensive and angry that we contested the charge and how we were lucky he wasnt charging us for the abdominal exploratory procedure of $500+. I understand that the procedure was attempted and their time was considered, so I was willing to pay something. I asked if we can meet halfway on the $250 bill and he would not budge. I also checked the box to contact me for any additional work that may be needed, thus the $500+ he "waived" should not have even been brought up, as I never received a call to consent with that. As well, he refused to return my calls to discuss the matter (four times I left messages with my phone number), so I then took time off work to go in today to hopefully reach a reasonable resolution. Instead he refused to accommodate the customer in any way on this unnecessary operation. How can the customer, with no experience at all, bear all the risk, with no disclosure of this even being a possibility? This is not my field, I relied on the professional. To summarize, Im $380 out-of-pocket on this experience for nothing and have a "Certificate of Spay" completed by Dr. William A. Grant II, stating he performed the spay on my cat. This is not true. This is a FALSE certificate. Hi did not perform the spay. He only charged me to confirm someone elses work. This is "bad revenue" with poor foresight in maintaining a good customer relationship.

Dr. Grant is very compassionate and a very skilled vet. The prices are very reasonable here compared to other places. I do not mind the no appointment thing as that means on any day I can bring my pet in. They do not do unnecessary procedures and they look out for ways to reduce costs. They are experienced and are not afraid of working dogs or schutzhund dogs like a lot of other vets. I admire this place as they rehabilitated and rescues that German Shepherd named "Courage" that made the news as its owner left it tied up for a month and it had to eat dirt to fill its stomach. Courage is in a loving home now with a full recovery! My only complaint is that the front office staff needs a lesson in compassion and dealing better with people. They need to understand that even though they have seen everything a hundred times and that this is routine for them, it is not that way for a lot of people with really sick or injured animals. We owners need some care, kindness, and gentleness too. I know that the front staff has to deal with people that dont pay, are jerks, etc a lot. But we are not all that way and sometimes we are so upset and in a state of shock or despair. Please understand that and be nicer. Its the worst front office staff I have had to deal with. YOU are the first impression people experience. Would it kill you to be a little nicer? Say things a little gentler? Act like you feel our pain too? I really think the front staff should go through some training on this. This is the only thing I do not like about this place, Even with that being said, the good outweighs the bad. I will still return for future care of my pets. I hope they are reading this and take this review to heart and improve. If they do, they will be perfect and there will be nothing to complain about.

This place is AWESOME. I first brought my dog here for a hematoma in his ear. I was really strapped for cash and couldnt afford my regular vet who was saying treatment/surgery would run between $750 - $1,250. I was forced to look for a new vet. I didnt want to get shoddy care for my dog so I asked a friend who owns show cats if she could refer me to a low cost vet office that she would trust with her very valuable cats. She didnt hesitate to refer me to Community Veterinary Hospital. They did the surgery, medication, and 2 follow up visits for under $400. I was stunned at the price difference, especially as the level of care and concern for my pet exceeded my experiences with my previous vet of 20 plus years. I also noticed on my first visit here that they have an entire wall covered in "thank you" plaques from police officers for treatment of their canine partners. The plaques were from police departments all over Southern California. I found this very impressive. I live in South Orange County, but dont hesitate to make the drive to Garden Grove for my dogs care now.

Wonderful veterinarians that have treated my best friend well. My dog has had lumps removed, teeth cleaning with anesthesia once, yearly itchy skin flare ups treated, a few stitches once from a dog fight and general health check ups here for the last 4 years. I have been very satisfied with the level of care and attention she has received with each veterinarian she has seen here each and every time. They do not overcharge or suggest unneeded add-ons or procedures. When needing to find a vet for my dog after moving back to CA, I researched many around our home. I chose this office in part due to the fact that they treat our local police officers K9 partners. If this office can be entrusted with caring for working police dogs, I feel comfortable with them caring for my dog too. Also, I am a worrier about any health issues with my dog has and the vets have been very patient with and reassuring to me when necessary. Although price is no object when it comes to your best friend, their rates are competitive with and usually less than other area vet offices.

Im amazed by the horrible reviews on this page. Dr. Grant and his staff set the standard for working dogs and pets in So Cal. Knowledgeable and compassionate. It is well worth the drive from San Diego for my dogs care to have the benefit of their expertise. Yes- it is true that they do not take appointments, but I am more than willing to wait to know that my dog is receiving the best care possible. As another reviewer pointed out- the prices are extremely fair. Poor Patty got slammed on this page. Dont believe everything you read. I had hoped not to mention this day, but I will if only to defend Patty. I have dealt with her on many occasions and have never had an issue. In fact, when I had to bring my German Shepherd in to be put to sleep, her calm, professional manner is what kept me together enough to be able to drive home. I wish I could give this office more than a 5 star rating. Many thanks to everyone at Dr. Grants office for taking care of me and my dog- Warner S.
