Started bringing my Smiley Dog Rescue adopted girl here in 2004. She has had vicious stomach / intestinal problems (2004) from being allowed to gnaw a tennis ball in the house, a diagnosis of struvite crystals (2009) after persistent urinary incontinence, a foxtail removed (2011) after sniffing too vigorously in the weeds at the Albany Bulb, a bad UTI diagnosed and treated, her teeth cleaned, a lump removed, and a paw injury examined and treated. Shes also been in for minor things and annual checkups along the way. Each time, whichever vet we have seen (Richter, Isaacson, Lynn, and others in the past) has been thorough and gentle with my girl and patient with my questions. My 90-lb mixed breed is now approaching 12 years old and has some of the accompanying indignities of age, but the folks at Montclair Vet have helped us devise the lightest approach to helping her stiffness and urinary leakiness. (Cosequin and Proin, the best thing since dog treats.) My dog continues to be healthy and happy in their care and acts like a young dog, not an elder, in her daily activities still. She cant wait to get in the door at the vet! No fear of going there, probably because from the outset I started a game in the little inside exam rooms of "find the tiny treat" - I bring them and hide them, and she finds them with enthusiasm. The vet or tech entering is just another fun thing in her mind. No procedure she has had there has dissuaded her from her enthusiasm, so the action in the "back room" must be gentle enough to keep the positive vibe. To those who dislike a vet that is run efficiently, I hope you can find somewhere else that satisfies you. Ive never had a problem with a waiting appointment for urgent matters, and the folks on the phone are in a hurry because they are trying to accommodate as many clients as need their help. If you want a vet that is better for YOU than your animal, look elsewhere. Im staying with Montclair Vet. (Dr Richter saved my old dogs life with a tracheotomy one night long before he moved to Montclair Vet, when he was working that emergency vet hospital in Berkeley on rotation, so I have a fondness for him on that account. But if his vet practice were poorly run I would not stay.)

My beloved dog Georgie Girl was a patient at Montclair Veterinary Hospital from the time I moved to the Bay Area 3 years ago until I had to put her to sleep a few weeks ago. We were extremely lucky to have been referred to them. She had several issues and their care was always expert, kind and thorough - including a great deal of time the veterinarian spent trying to find her a neurologist one holiday weekend Friday (she did!). They always gave her plenty of time and attention - in fact, I felt as though she was a favorite doggie of theirs, while at my last vet I wasnt sure they remembered her from one time to the next. I found out a bit later on about their extensive holistic services, and those were a godsend. Her passing was extremely calm and peaceful and - I cry just thinking of it - the very sensitive handling of her ashes was also just wonderful. The staff is as empathic as the doctors, and it was so good knowing that Georgie was treated so well during times that might have been stressful for her otherwise. They are the BEST!!!!

This is a great place! I am so glad that I found the docs at Montclair Vet Hospital; I just wished I had discovered them sooner. My wonderful 15 year old dog was very ill and we kept taking her to our regular vet. She was seriously misdiagnosed at this vet. Someone told me about the Montclair Veterinary Hospital and I called and they saw us right away. Within 10 minutes they were able to (unfortunately) diagnose my dog with advanced cancer. At this point there wasnt anything that could be done except to make her comfortable. Our previous vet had been giving us antibiotics for a stomach ailment! Sadly, our dog passed away. We have a new dog now and he is 1 1/2 years old. We have been taking him to Montclair Vet since the day we got him and he is not going anywhere else! Great vets, great staff, wonderful follow-up. Bring your pets to them!!

We are new to the area of Oakland, ca. We have four pets two are rescues. When i called the Montclair Vet office, i didnt get a machine, i got a friendly human being who asked me about all my pets in great detail. My cat had an upper respiratory infection and the staff were on hand to take immediate care of him as soon as we walked in the door. Dr Eric, and his team, gotta give a shout out to Zena (zina?) vet tech for not only her care of my cat but towards us her bubbly personality put us at ease. Dr. Eric is not only well versed in his profession, but just super friendly and explained everything concerning our cats issue concisely and thoroughly. Front desk staff, wonderful customer service!!! I am bringing all my pets to Montclair Vet for all our vet needs. ♥ I HIGHLY recommend this veterinary hospital to anyone and to all my friends.

I am so glad I found Dr. Richter and his staff! My cat of 16 years was diagnosed with kidney disease and we exhausted all the traditional treatments for the first year. After researching the promising results of stem cell therapy, I decided to get the procedure done for him. I spent months calling around looking for a doctor who would be willing to perform the surgery here in LA. Finally, I contacted Dr. Richter and he was more than happy and willing to help. He & his staff were so friendly and compassionate, it made the whole trip from LA to Oakland completely worth while. Its been 2 months now and Kitters creatnine level has gone down from a 2.8 to a 2.4 and hes already gained a pound. I would highly recommend this hospital to anyone with a furry friend.

My beautiful and beloved Champion Maine Coon cat that I had for 14 years was treated here for a horrible mouth cancer. They were all very sweet and caring. That said, when my beloved died I got a nice call from his Doctor but that was it. After spending thousands of dollars and them knowing how destroyed I was I am very surprised that they didnt take two minutes to send a sympathy card like my cats normal vet did. I hate to say that it really hurt my feelings. You want to think that these people care about you and your pet but when something like a seaming brush under the rug happens when your beloved pet dies and they spent so much time with them... hey, I dont know what to say. I am confused and saddened.

While they may be competent, Montclair Vet is over priced and not always informative about fees until it is too late. I was offered several different medication options once. I opted to try a pill. One pill. Down my cats throat it went and then I got the bill. $110 for one pill. Id learned my lesson and next time I went in, I asked for costs before agreeing to anything. That time I got an estimate for a procedure of $1800. I shopped about and got it from a different vet, completely reputable, for less than 1/2 that price. Im financially well off, but see no need to be gouged for over-priced and unnecessary services. I dont plan on returning to Montclair Vet.
