If you read all of the reviews below, there are some very troubling experiences at Campus Vet. We have trusted our pets, five cats and two dogs, to Campus Vet since Dr. Berger provided top-quality care and treatment for them. With his retirement, weve noticed more and more unacceptable veternarian practices: one doctor there prescribed 20 aspirin for our large, aging dog. Later, Dr. Yen, from our report months later, reduced it to 4, twice a day. He didnt take the trouble to see why the larger amount had been prescribed. Then, when our daughter (who does not live with us and having surgeery three days later) took our dog to see Dr. Yen, the front desk berated her for not paying the bill immediately. Before, we had been billed, and paid our account within 30 days. Their insensitivity and corporate HMO business got even worse. On the "evaluation" form in the waiting area, there is a question, "Does the doctor wash his hands before treating your pet?" Since I had never seen him do this, and his assistants who take rectal temperatures, etc also failed to do so, I mentioned it to the front desk. They immediately began hedging and covering up for the doctor, saying that "not every exam requires that the doctor wash his or her hands." I asked what the differences were, and she continued to avoid the point and continued to explain so as to protect the doctors and assistants. Recently, evidence in hospitals revealed that barely 35% of doctors wash before touching patients, and the recommendation was made to tell the doctors to wash, which increased compliance to about 65%. Feeling totally ripped off by the office staff, I asked Dr. Yen about this handwashing question on the questionaire. He said that he washed his hands before entering the room. I asked if the doorknob was sanitized before he touched it, and he evaded an answer. This seems to me, and I told him, to be evidence of poor medical practice. If your pet was sick after a visit to Dr. Yen, he would certainly refuse to agree that his poor practices may have caused the emergence of an illness. My wife and I talk with him now as he treats our aging, giant dog, now with heart defects that will eventually lead to his death. My wife has to remind him to speak clearly about medical matters, as he sometimes tries to soft petal the language as if to protect the family. Im fed up with Campus Vet, having seen an excellent example of veternarian practice with Dr. Berger and now, having to cope with poor medical practice and a disregard for standard medical practice. Notice how many of the reviews below are very negative . . . and prepare to pay more than most other vets in the Berkeley area charge.. Check out the reviews for the Codornices Veterinary Clinic, near Solano Ave. ALL OF THEM at 4s and 5s, very good to excellent. .

We have been taking our cats to Campus Vet since 2005. The doctors and staff have been awesome, especially Dr. Reid, Dr. Yen, Kim, S.J., and Lisa -- these are people who have really gone above and beyond over the years. Recently we have seen Dr. Parsley too and she has also been excellent. It would take a long time to describe all that they have done for us -- everything from doing an enema on my oldest cat when she got constipated after our two-day road trip when we moved to Berkeley, to a surgery several years later when she developed a tumor, to EXTREMELY compassionate end-of-life care for her years after that when she finally went into kidney failure aged nineteen; plus routine stuff for our other two cats, one of whom was a rescue and is extremely aggressive and difficult to handle. Their fees are in line with other vets in the area, and I feel very confident that we have gotten excellent care from them over the years. I have recommended them to some of our close friends when they got a cat for the first time, and they also thought the care was very good. The ONLY down side is that they dont have much parking (just three-ish spots in front), but its downtown Berkeley, so thats only to be expected. Usually you can use their lot because there are only a few appointments around the same time, but when its full there is typically two-hour free street parking around the corner.

Weve been taking our pets to Campus Veterinary Clinic for 30 years and through it all - ownership changes, veterinary staff changes, and office staff changes - the clinic has been consistent in its warmth, caring, and true love for the animals. They saved the life of our cat after she was viciously attacked by a dog, they compassionately ushered another elderly and ailing cat from this life, they kept our beloved dog going as long as possible after a brain tumor diagnosis, and, in between, theyve treated other full- and part-time canine residents of our home with efficiency and kindness, holding my hand when necessary and providing telephone support when appropriate. I think it says something when the dogs theyve treated try to detour to the clinic door when were walking by. I recommend them without reservation.

Hi - Just wanted to lavish praises on Campus Veterinary Clinic. I met them through our dog from Berkeley Animal Care Services. They had nurtured this 3 year old dog from near-death (almost a statistic - mange from bites) and had him healthy for adoption. He looked a mess from his shave but we fell in love with our Phil. Little did I know the staff at Campus had also fallen in love with him too - he was a rock star when we walked in the first time to pick him up after his neuter! Dr. Reid and all Docs and staff since we have been going in 2006 have been super kind, courteous with us and our pet, and - aside from a bill which is never a good time, and never extensive - we have had only great experiences here. Highly recommend!

I am super happy with Dr. Reid and team and know my cat is in good hands with them. Dr. Reid is very knowledgeable and works well with my senior kitty who is also generally very afraid of people. She identified her asthma and food allergy, allowing me to make simple changes that help my cat be happier and healthier. The team is also very conscious of expenses. When the price of my cats medicine went up dramatically, they called me ahead of time to let me know so that I would have time to explore other places I might be able to get it cheaper (like Costco) instead of buying it directly from them. It is always a pleasure visiting Campus Veterinary!

I have used Campus Veterinary for the routine exam as well as for the emergency. The entire staff is friendly and accomodating. I recently made an appointment for both of my cats yearly exam and one of the cats hid under the bed that morning. I arrived at the office with only one carrier, and they suggested to bring the other cat whenever it was convenient for me and they would squeeze her in without an appointment. I have only seen Dr Yen, he is kind and efficient (important for stressed out cat). I appreciate the fact that he has always given me options when it comes to treatment for my pets. I am now a loyal customer.
