I love Dr. Fong -- hes just the best. He claims that hes not a "holistic" vet, but I would argue that hes a "wholistic" vet. Every time Ive had one of my dogs into to see him, hes asked me to put my dog on the floor so he could observe them walking around and other behavior which would give him additional information that a clinical exam would not. He has a wonderful, gentle touch, and friendly demeanor which quickly puts my dogs at ease. He really takes a look at the entire animal and doesnt just rely on you to tell him what are your pets symptoms. I also really appreciate that Dr. Fong doesnt pooh-pooh feeding your pet a raw diet or a homemade diet, although he will caution you on making sure that whatever diet you feed your pet is nutritionally balanced. When I adopted my second dog, Dolly, she came down with a case of systemic demodectic mange, and Dr. Fong was supportive of my efforts to heal her naturally and boost her immune system with a raw diet rather than the conventional treatment of ivermectin. The raw diet worked, and Dr. Fong was invaluable in guiding me through the process of knowing when Dolly would in the clear to be spayed and to receive her rabies vaccine. Dr. Fong never pushes unnecessary procedures, treatments, or vaccines, and will readily offer his advice on what is the most prudent course of action for someone with limited resources. He knows that Im a long-time foster parent of rescue dogs and all of my dogs have been rescued, including my third dog, Koby, and it was reflected as a welcome discount in Kobys first wellness visit with Dr. Fong. Finally, Dr. Fong, besides being a great doctor, is also just a wonderful and compassionate human being. During the time Ive known Dr. Fong, he has seen me suffer through the unexpected deaths of both a foster dog and a longtime friend and founder of a local rescue within a couple months of each other, and he offered very welcome and touching words of condolences in both cases.

This place is falling apart and the staff have become less helpful as time goes by (Jenny to be specific in one of the ocasions). I started many years ago when Dr. Fong had taken over the practice. I do not recommend this place to anyone now the way it is run. First when my daughter started caring for my dog they did not get my authorization to switch the medical record to her name. When I got my dog back to care for they wanted authorization from my daughter to add my name. What a joke. They also did not carry the multi topical flee/heart worm medication and where not helpful at all for me to get it through on line. Did not want to send the prescription to on the line store,"because our policy does not let us". and took them over a week to get met the prescription mailed to me in which took another week to send it our. They did not want to email it to me. Are you kidding me? Get out of the stone age for heaven sake. Lastly, although my dog had hurt her leg, they were not willing to open an appointment on the day because "we are so busy" and dont have time. Which then I took her to the emergency clinic on the 9th ave. After wards days later, when I took my dog to them, they could not get her records from the emergency care. Made me work several hours on the phone to figure out oh yes, they had the dog again under my daughters married name.... and did not give my name to the clinic to get her records. What a good place going to waist... I will be seeking a new vet and will be also seeking legal advice.

I have been taking my pets to Irving street pet hospital since 1990. You read that right--not a typo. I rescued a little canary from a tenants apartment that was being neglected after the tenant died and his girlfriend and his family were fighting over the rights to what was in the apartment. I brought him to my office and fed him, and loved him, and eventually both sides agreed they didnt want the little guy, and I could bring him home. Back then, Dr. Penney took fabulous care of him, and when he was sick, made him well. I later rescued an Akita mix from the humane society, and for 16 years, Irving street took such marvelous care. When I say marvelous, I mean MARVELOUS--Im a critical care nurse (people) and they were spot on with everything, and treated my four-legged son as if he were a two-legged human boy. They respected him and us, and my advanced knowledge of anatomy, physiology and pathology in general and always spoke to me like a colleague--with all the answers I was looking for. I cant imagine ever bringing my current 4-legged boy anywhere else. These guys give better care than some hospitals Ive worked in give to their people patients. Nuff said. you will NEVER find a better vet.

I have been going to Irving Pet Hospital for the last 5 years. Everytime I come in, I am welcomed by the front desk staff. From time to time there is a back-up in the schedule, and the staff will tell you when you check in. IPH is an exception place to bring your business because of the great customer service. Once, it was close to closing time and I to pick up a prescription. I called to tell them I was running late, and they kept the door open for me (10 minutes after closing). I was able to get my meds and make sure my critters would start feeling better soon. The other amazing thing about IPH is that all the vets are very knowledgable and open to learning more if they have not experienced a unique case yet. The nice thing about waiting in the lobby is that the other clients are very friendly and it is a great animal environment. I highly recommend this veterinary hospital to anyone who has an exotic pet, cat, or dog. The staff know their animals! :-) Pros: Excellent care and experience by veterinarians. Cons: Waiting on hold when you call in.

The staff at Irving Pet Hospital is remarkable, and I dont say that lightly, having experience with other practices in the area. The vets who care for my cats are excellent (primarily Dr. Jones, but Dr. Fong as well, and others consultatively); Really smart and mindful, diligent, compassionate with amazing follow up, and a collaborative approach. They also translate medical terminology and concepts really well! The nursing staff is so wonderful; incredibly caring, thorough, and thoughtful. When one of my cats had to go in for large intake of fluid over a period of days a few months ago, I learned that the nurses took turns holding him, making sure he had a lot of attention. Incredibly heartening during a very difficult time. The front desk staff is fantastic; so nice, always really helpful, and on top of everything, even during hectic times. Im extremely appreciative for every aspect of this practice, all of the wonderful people who make it work. I highly recommend this veterinary group!

I brought our two year old Great Dane to Dr. Fong for a second opinion. I had made an appointment and was actually early by quite a bit. The clinic accommodated me with an appointment so I would not have to hang around for hours, since I am from the east bay. What I noticed is that the other clients came in and were ushered in and out in such an organized manner that it was nice to know that if I was on the schedule it would be a smooth experience. That is worth a lot in anyones busy schedule. As for the second opinion, my wife and I were so impressed, who was on a cell phone interacting within the consult, that we switched vets on the spot. Connecting with a Dr. who also was a Great Dane owner was a lucky stroke and great for us. Hercules, our two year old, is number four of our families line of six Danes. Our son has a puppy Odesius (Ody for short) and Hercules has a eight month old buddy at home, Artimus (Moose for short) also a Dane. We are all members of the Irving pet Clinic.
