I came in here today with a dog new to a local rescue. Hed been a stray and needed an initial physical exam, x-rays of his pelvic limbs, and blood work. I did like that they take walk-in appointments, but I wasnt happy about anything else about this visit. I saw Dr. Alexander and was immediately put off when she began talking to me like I was a four year old who had never owned a dog before. I I tried politely explain that Im a technician and Ive worked at animal hospitals for over a decade, specifically in surgery and internal medicine, which is my most recent specialty (I opened the department several years ago at the current hospital). She still insisted on talking to me like I was a child so I just let her speak, but I noticed that her physical exam was the most limited physical exam Ive ever seen. She checked absolutely not a single thing on the face to include the ears, eyes, nose, or anything in the mouth or throat. She didnt palpate the abdomen, she didnt perform a rectal exam exam, and I even asked if she would like me to lay him down so she can examine certain joints and she said no. She bent one elbow and both knees, but didnt at all manipulate the hips despite the fact that I said that he seems like hes in a lot of pain specifically in those joints. I also said he has a right forelimb limp which is intermittent, and she bent his elbow once but didnt bother at all with the shoulder. I was surprised by this but I was cautious about asking her to do anything more because she was already talking to me like I was a child and it was obnoxious. I performed a more thorough and professional physical when the dog first came to my home just a few days ago, but thats neither here nor there I guess. I also suggested radiographs of the pelvic limbs couldnt hurt because there was obvious pain in both hips and she said the only way they would go forward with x-rays is if they sedated him with Ketamine and Valium. This is a geriatric dog, very easily about eight years old, we have no prior blood work, and I even explained that his neutering caused him to be overly sedated for the entire remainder of the day using similar medications. She said they wont do the x-rays without that, to which I replied I thought that was an aggressive sedation protocol for an animal that doesnt really need to be sedated for x-rays. I then explained that we also didnt have any blood work on him yet, so a senior panel would probably be a good idea. She then explained to me what blood work was and what it measured. I tried to yet again go over the fact that Im a technician and Ive probably read those panels, and pulled for those panels, longer than shes been a veterinarian. But I didnt want to be disrespectful so I didnt say that, and I again let her talk to me like a child. I asked her to go ahead with the blood work, hes an older dog with no prior medical examinations or diagnostics and wed like to make sure hes as happy and healthy as possible before we try to find him home as a rescue. She just nodded her head and took the dog and that was the end of our interaction. She didnt tell me when I would get those results and she never came back in the room. I had to ask at the front desk what their protocol for that was. Instead of them calling me when they get the results, I have to call in starting at 9 a.m. tomorrow to see what they were. When I got out of the office, I called somebody who is much more familiar with this office than I am and this person had the exact same opinion about Dr. Alexander. Shes condescending and talks to you like a child, and is the most incomplete, unthorough person Ive ever dealt with in a veterinary capacity. Id rather pay three times the cost to go somewhere else if it means I feel like theres a higher level of professionalism and the simple diagnostics such as a physical exam are performed in a more thorough capacity. On a smaller note, the prices were ridiculous, the waiting room is tiny, and getting out of this parking lot is obnoxious

This place not only has the worst most negative, unhappy, vibe with their workers, they also dont care for animals. The place reeks of animal abuse and the proof is in their policy. If you board your dogs here, their policy is to not let the dogs outside, ever. The never take the dogs outside to a grassy area or anything to play, ever. We were happy when we originally decided to board them here as many places do not allow staffordshire terriers, but they do. We boarded them multiple times here, and every time we picked up the dogs they seemed distraught and out of it for a couple days. We later just found out today, that they do not even let the dogs out of the kennels, ever while they are here. If the dog has to go the bathroom, it has to do it on the concrete in their kennel, and they said they just move the dog to another cage, to clean it the cage. So any normal dog that has been brought up to go to the bathroom outside, has to learn to go on the concrete, and think they are doing something wrong during that time; furthermore, they are forced to remain inside their cage the entire time for their "boarding". This place is disgusting and I would NEVER subject my animals to it again, and feel like a bad owner for not investigating more thoroughly their process of boarding. They are all angry workers, and the lady seemed embarrassed to tell me when I asked how their boarded dogs get taken outside, that they never see outside while they are boarded there.

I have used Bay Cities Pet Hospital since 1998. As a former kennel worker in a show and attack dog kennal I have a lot of experience with animals. I am also an EMT and understand a lot of medical areas. Dr. Rios is the best. Dr Sullivan does the surgeries and I do not know him as well but he has scene my animals and has been great. They have scene my animals through good times and bad. They have worked with me to keep them in good health even when things were stacked against them. The most mermorable is saving my puppies life that had Parvo. Dr. Rios assisted with final arangements and my last moments with two of my animals one cat and one dog. I would not have wanted anyone else there. A very emotional time but she understood and was there for me and my babies. I have delt with diabetis, blindness, injuries, Parvo and the problems animals face as they grow old. They have helped me through all of them. They listen and work with me and my finacial abilities. I would give them a 6 star rating but Google would not let me.

We have been using Bay Cities pet Hospital for many many many years. Even before Dr Sullivan and Dr Rios. The are truly fabulous. I recently had to put my beloved Petie to sleep and they were caring, supportive and considerate of my feelings and my Petie. Anyone who bad mouths Bay Cities is a nit picky nagger. I find the cost is reasonable more so than other vets. They are simply the best there is. I appreciate them and trust them in handling my babies health and well being. I find it hard to believe that People on here say that they do not consult you when working with your pet. They walk with you every step of the way. I am confident you are just complaining as you did not take good care of your pet and you are just upset as you had to put out a little extra money due to your negligence not Bay Cities! They will forever have my admiration, respect and devotion! Tina
