We have been with ACT for several years, and most of the aides we have had are professional and experienced. I believe the problem is with the administration. We have had some aides that we became close to, like family. One such aide had an accident and was out for a couple months. They promised we could have her back when she was released from doctors care. However, that did not happen. The aide wanted to come back as well. On another occasion his regular aide went out of the country for a month, ACT did not staff the hours adequately. They knew about the absence months prior, and did not prepare an aide to fill his hours. Instead, some of his hours went unfilled, and other hours were filled by a new person everyday. Some were brand new aides that had no experience. My son is disabled and the person needs to be trained. They sent me aides that were afraid of dogs, knowing that I had a dog. This is just a sample of what has happened over the past years. There have been many other smaller issues. I have stayed with ACT for fear of getting a company that may be worse. The company will no longer allow their aides to transport the clients to appts., shopping, or leisure activities; whether using the clients vehicle, or the aides vehicle. For some, including my son, this is a service that is essential for the client to participate and interact in the community. As for the office staff, it depends on the situation as to whether they are friendly or not. I have had them tell me one thing, and our aide something different. They like to tell you whatever will make you happy, and not follow thru. I have left messages, and not received calls back. I have been told that they have a problem staffing aides, and this is true. Maybe if they paid their staff more money, they could employ responsible people, and the turn over rate would be less. Did you know that most aides/CNAs receive less than half of the hourly rate that the state pays the agency? This is a demanding job, and to make $10 or less an hour, is ridiculous. I have talked to the owners, and they ask me to give them a chance, and bear with them. I have done just that, but I cannot do it any longer. I have finally filed a complaint with the state. Do I recommend them? No; but in fairness, I have not heard anything great about any particular agency. I have looked up several, and by their websites, they sound wonderful. You have to try them out, and see if they stand by what they proclaim to do. Maybe I expect too much...But, when it comes to my son, I will always advocate for his needs. If someone is verbally abusing him or not taking care of his hygiene properly, yes I will say something. I fear for the clients that do not have someone to speak up for them. I think if they did, this agency as well as others, would have far more complaints.
