When I first came to this hospital, things seemed okay. We originally chose to take our dogs to H.A.H. because Two by Two was pretty expensive in comparison. When I explain things, youll see why price shouldnt be the only determinant when choosing a vet... which I learned the hard way. Though they have somewhat cheaper prices on services, in the last year or two it seems like the staff and vets have become increasingly less friendly, less helpful and annoyed if you would like to discuss your options/heath of your pet and treatments, etc. and overall just not easy to work with. My husband & I try to be intelligent consumers and educate ourselves, not just take whatever a doctor/vet gives us.... so obviously we will ask questions. Why wouldnt we!? Anyhow, here are my main gripes with this place: --On more than one occasion, we have had to give one of our dogs antibiotics on a recurring basis. Instead of finding a new course of action, it seems like this vet just appreciates a good antibiotic (the same one) and thinks its the only way to treat a problem. I think our dog gets cysts on his paws and picks at them. They have given him antirobe numerous times and the problem persists. We are on the verge of just treating it ourselves, or going to 2 by 2 to try to get it treated in a better way. --When they have given us antibiotics, our dog has had some side-effects that were never explained to us, and were not listed on the bottle. One time he was foaming at the mouth and acting very drowsy, and I called in frantically asking about this behavior. The person I spoke with did not apologize or seem to really care at all, and told us that they routinely tell their patients about all of this and we were told. We were NOT told, and I think Id remember that side-effect. He was also peeing all over the floor another time, which we wouldve prevented by trying to contain him somewhere with newspaper if he couldnt hold his bladder because of an antibiotic... but once again, highland animal hospital failed in fully explaining things, and we did not realize that this would be a possible side effect. Just plain incompetent. --The staff, and one individual in particular, are crabby and dont seem to care about you. If youre going to have a medical business which provides services to the public, HIRE PEOPLE WHO ARE KIND, and who can actually have people skills, as well as professional customer service capabilities. Dont hire people who act like teenagers with a hangover.... or PMSing high schoolers. Also, said PMSing girl called my dogs "Crazy dogs" in a tone that was definitely mean and sarcastic. Not appreciated. Save yourself time, and just spend some extra money. We will be doing that at 2 by 2.

Of the two vets in Highland this place is a little cheaper and maybe its okay for minor things like vaccinations, but when it comes to major issues I choose to use 2 by 2 Animal Hospital. Growing up we had always taken our cats there for routine things and not had any problems. Later in life I adopted a husky and brought him there too. Suddenly he became very sick and they did test after test and couldnt figure it out. Finally he crashed and he rushed him to the doggy E.R. where the vet diagnosed him with Addisons disease and he was in kidney failure. 2 hours and 1 test determined his condition at the E.R., I spent $200+ at the vet and in 2 weeks they couldnt figure anything out. The E.R. doc saved his life! The next day we were told to follow up with H.A.H. vet and he attempted to give him another dose of Prednazone...luckily my husband realized that was a bad move and refused. It would have overdosed him. Thats when we called 2 by 2 and started taking him there. Through all his ups and downs Dr. Vandiver was great and knowledgeable. She gave us another 5 great years with him before we lost him to the disease at the age of 10. 2 years ago we took in a stray cat and I wanted to get him declawed. I thought that was pretty routine and it was less expensive to use Highland Animal Hospital. After the surgery I picked up the cat and they told me everything went well, but that she had a tooth with a problem. That was it. 1.5 weeks later the cat had a major seizure off to the E.R. again and the vet said more than likely the infection from the tooth and the decreased immunity from the surgery is what caused the seizure. That was the first Id heard of a suppressed immunity from surgery. We lost him that night. Seems to me if they noticed a tooth problem and they were aware that anesthesia suppressed the immune system they would have suggested taking care of the tooth before the surgery instead of an after the fact comment about a tooth. Ill spend the extra money for a competent establishment.

This hospital has been nothing but GREAT for my own pets, friends, and families pets. I am sorry some people have had bad experiences with them, but I am sure it had to do with their pets condition that they base their experience off of. Dr. Leckrone is an amazing veterinarian and helped me and my fiance through the hardest time. She had diagnosed our puppy with Stage 5 Lymphona and rushed to get us into the hospital in St. Louis for a 2nd opinion and to get him hospitalized. She was always willing to be there for us if we had any questions and gave us her personal cell phone to talk. When things got bad and Wally had passed, she was at the vet after hours and told us to bring him in. She had tears in her eyes and is truly a caring vet.

I took my dog there on 9/19/12 and she was in great need of help. I was holding her and she was limp in my arms plus her sister died the day before so I needed to have her seen. Everyone there told me to go somewhere else and wouldnt even look at my dog. My dog even started bleeding on their floor and they still did nothing. My pet was blatantly disregarded by the staff at this Animal Hospital. It was like she wasnt even worth their time. My dog passed away 15 minutes after leaving there to go somewhere else. She was only 7 months old. I would strongly recommend that NO ONE take their pet to this Animal Hospital especially if it is an emergency.

Highland Animal Hospital is reputable, clean and the vets have always been caring and responsivle when it comes to pet care. We have been coming here for 18 years with our pets. Wouldnt take them any where else, even when we moved 20 miles from Highland. Highly recommend.

We live in FL. Had a sick cat, took her to emergency vet care near Collinsville and paid a fortune. Took her to Highland Animal Hospital, MUCH better care at a MUCH better price. Have since taken two other cats here, always great service at a competitive price.

The personnel here are very friendly and have taken good care of my dog each time he has had to go there, which in the past year seems to have been a lot. I am docking one star because of a mixup with some medicine they put him on.
