I took my cat to the Banfield Clinic in Bowie Md last Sunday because he woke up with a severely swollen ear. We went in for walk in service and initially things seemed like they would be ok. However, the longer we waited, the more things I noticed that made me uncomfortable. The vet techs were not washing their hands or using disinfectant between handling animals. Secondly, when we were finally brought into a room to be seen, we waited an additional 45 minutes between being seen by the vet tech and the vet. When the vet finally did come in to see my cat, the vet made an extremely cursory visual inspection of the ear and immediately declared that surgery would be required. The vet then left the room and sent in a tech 20 minutes later with a cost estimate. The cost estimate I was quoted was $1300 for a very non invasive surgery to drain fluid (specifically a hematoma) from the thin skin of my cats ear.(As an aside, Im going to another vet clinic with infinitely better customer service and animal care and their HIGHEST price estimate for this procedure is $450 which includes blood work AND medications. Id like to know where Banfield is getting their pricing from.) Included in that was medications and a cone. I love my cat so I agreed to the estimate just to have a back up plan in place in case I couldnt get seen elsewhere. After I approved the non negotiable estimate, they took my cat in the back to give him an antibiotic and a pain killer as well as to "size" him for a cone. The cone that they sent me home with is a size and a half too small at its largest sizing. I dont think they even tried it on him. What bothers me most about this though, is that neither the technicians OR the veterinarian gave me any pre surgery instructions other than to drop him off between 7 and 8 am on the day of the surgery. No mention of no food/water/treats for at least 12 hours before surgery. Nothing. In summary, I am EXTRAORDINARILY dissatisfied with this vet clinic and will not be giving them my business again. The only thing this clinic has going for it is the convenience of it being less than 15 minutes away from my home.

Im becoming less and less satisfied with this Banfield. We have been coming here for 7 years (since my dog was a puppy) and now that hes getting older and requiring more vet care, Im noticing how bad this vet clinic is. First of all, the care plans are gimmicky and expensive. You save whatever amount per vet visit, but pay so much more per year than youd ever save. Also, it seems like they sell you the most expensive medications possible. I was just made to buy hexachlor-k wipes for my dog who has an abscess. Not only do these wipes contain an anti fungal that he doesnt need given that he has a bacterial infection, but they cost twice as much because they contain said anti fungal. That and they contain acetic acid which Im sure burns like hell on my dogs wound when the flush he actually needs, chlorhexidine .2% solution, is supposed to be a mild antiseptic. Not to mention the wipes smell pungently of vinegar. I have now purchased another antiseptic from Amazon because I cannot bear to watch my poor dog wince when I clean his wound with an antifungal and acetic acid. So, all in all I have spent $25 I didnt need to spend. This is all not to mention the time Dr. Mallela thought a surgery scar on my dogs backside was a patch of ringworm. I will be leaving Banfield as soon as our care plans expire. This is why big corporations and animal care shouldnt mix.

I have a rednose american pitbull and i opted for this banfield because they have the earliest new pet apt available. I read the reviews and it was disheartening but i told myself its just for his new puppy eval if i dont like it i wont come back plain and simple. I received a coupon to my email for a free new pet exam, i took my dog in for his exams and the vet assistant was great, she explained everything the vet was talking about. there was very little wait time. The vet came in, he seemed very knowledgeable and voiced all the concerns he had for my dog. The assistant wanted to get us on a wellness plan but because funds($) were limited at the time i opted for home remedies. that was 2 months ago. so far i have not experienced anything to stray me from this hospital. Ive been back since then for his shots and meds(everything went smoothly) and my dog has a dental apt next week. Keeping my fingers crossed nothing goes wrong but i have nothing bad to say about this pet hospital.

I wish there was a rating below poor-fair. Our cat was exhibiting symptoms of renal failure. Called Banfield (our regular vet for the past few years) and they said they could schedule an appointment in 5 days or we can do a walk-in. Did a walk-in and sign above desk said "sick and injured animals are seen first." After an hour with nothing happening I asked what the status is and was told they could see my cat only if a previously scheduled appointment did not show up. So much for "sick and injured first." Ended up taking her to the emergency vet in Bowie where regretfully our cat did have onset of kidney failure and had to be put down. Banfield has seriously deteriorated in service over the past two years; over-booked, no concern for animal well-being, impersonal, etc. Thats it for us.

I took my dog to get treatment and he was given several testing and medications that sent my bill through roof. I ended up using self home remedies. I switched to Dr. Chanell and I like her better. She doesnt seem to run up the bill.

Im not happy with the Bowie Location at all. Pain and suffering would be better than having to deal with them. Their corporate offices are useless as well. They get zero stars from me. If I could take stars away I would.

Bait and switch plain and simple. We will NEVER go there again! Our final price was nearly $200 higher than quoted.
