I woke up recently with pain in my chest and difficulty breathing deeply. Fortunately (so I thought at the time), I was headed to my 180 day post-deployment dental checkup at the Bedford VA Hospital. I resolved to go to the VA Urgent Care clinic immediately after my dental appointment. By the end of my dental appointment, I was in enough pain to wonder if it was wrong for me to delay my trip to Urgent Care. I grimaced at the growing pain I was experiencing as I made my way over to the other side of the building. I was checked in quickly enough, and they ran an EKG to ensure that the pain wasnt due to some heart condition. I explained that the pain was fairly constant, but mainly came when I tried to breath. A woman doctor of East Indian decent came in after the initial tests to further diagnose the issue. She didnt seem to have a clue what the problem could possibly be. Then she thought that my pupils were unevenly dilated and accused me of taking street drugs! Me: Im a clean-cut student at a top 50 MBA school in the Boston area. Its pretty easy to tell that Im not the type that is into drugs. I even brought a book on Mergers & Acquisitions with me to read during any downtime. This accusation was completely moronic and completely unrelated to the symptoms I was experiencing! Anyways, the doctor did order chest X-rays. I was told that I could leave after getting the X-rays taken. I then actually had to ask the staff what I should do if my pain and difficulty breathing didnt subside. They said that I should take Motrin IB and wait for their call. After X-rays, I left not feeling one damn bit better. I stopped at the first convenience store to get Motrin IB. This helped with the pain enough where I was able to meet up with a class group and work on a project. I never got a call that day with the diagnosis or next steps I should take. After waking up the next morning still in severe pain and coughing up a bit of blood, I went to the emergency room at a real hospital. The real hospital did the same tests, added some blood work, and actually diagnosed my condition! I had pleurisy caused by a viral infection. That was good news since it could have otherwise been a pulmonary embolism, pneumonia, lung cancer, or a host of other pleurisy causing ailments. Its certainly nice that they let me know! Anyways, the hospital prescribed pain killers which now allow me to breath normally again and I should be over this infection in a few more days. For the sake of good veterans everywhere, I hope that East Indian woman doctor is fired.

Have only been there three or four times in the last couple of years but my experiences have been mostly positive. They give me in depth reports on my blood work (incl PSA) which I give to my primary physician outside the VA. This saves me about $200 in copays for the blood work. Also had a couple of appointments with the dermatologist that went well. All in all, not bad.
