I shuffled into the ER with help from my son last night at 12:30. The staff at the Stewart Family Hospital Norwood never even let me sit in a waiting room chair. I was ushered to a 3-wall private ER room and immediately had a team of motivated, amazing people working to help me. They ruled out the worst-case scenario quickly and then started on bloodwork (30 minutes for results) and then a CAT scan (15 minutes). The second worst diagnosis was confirmed and they then kept me comfortable until the OR could be prepped and staffed. I was there only 13 hours total, but I saw three work shifts in that time. Every person was fantastic and caring. By about 1 pm the following day, I left sans one organ, nearly pain-free, and freed from any doubts I may have had that we have the best healthcare system in the world in Metro West Boston. The Insurance hassles? At one point after I was admitted an admin person said: “Are you with (named my provider)?” I said, “Yes”, and scribbled a signature. All around me were the neediest of our area. Drug addicts, a car crash victim (unconscious), and a dog mauling victim (screaming). And many elderly patients who should clearly have been in a nursing home, but were getting care in the ER. When I moved to the pre and post OP, my roommate was finishing three days of detoxing and climbing the walls. I saw all of them get the same outstanding care I did and it was clear they didn’t have the means to pay for any sort of luxury insurance. When I first moved to this area about 20 years ago Norwood was a Catholic Charities hospital. That same caring is still part of that place.

Stay away if possible. When you arrive you deal with rude, inconsiderate people at the desk. They have no sense of urgency and would rather sit and talk to each other rather than help the patients. We had to interrupt the woman at the desk, after standing there for a few minutes, because she was in the middle of a story with the lady working next to her. We had a serious concern but it was as though we were bothering her with the injury we were bringing. We then waited to be seen for about an hour. So we asked how much longer it would be. The response was "we have no idea, theres no help and a lot of patients." Great, reassuring and comforting answer. So I pushed to try and get an estimate; less than 2 hours, more than 3? The response "no idea!" So the two women returned to their conversation. We then got in a room: Filthy. Blood on the gurney, I couldnt believe it. The floor looked like it hadnt been washed in days. (Dont touch anything) then the registration liaison came in; she didnt speak clear English. She was unable to understand my child and my child could not understand her. Why would you put a non English speaking person in a position that relies on communication? Finally many hours later we were seen by a physicians asst. They put in the many sutures and gave a surgical referral. Overall the worst experience Ive ever been part of in an emergency room. From the intake to the discharge. I cant find anything positive to say. You were warned. Stay away!

My ex-husband is currently a patient in this hospital which was the closest hospital, (rushed by ambulance). I find the nurses in the ICU to be surly, without empathy and extremely unhelpful. Unfortuantely, Ive had to visit several family members in hospitals over the years and I have never encountered these types of experiences. Dont even bother calling the ICU to check on a patient. I was told by one nurse who answered the phone that the attending nurse is too busy to continue answering questions about my ex so I should go to the last person that she shared information with! (This was basically a quote from the attending nurse since she put me on hold to go and speak with her). I get that they are busy, but could the attending nurse just share information with the nurse that answered the phone who could have then shared info with me? That is standard at the exceptionally "better at customer service" hospitals Ive visited; and Ive visited patients in all of the top hospitals in Boston. I called another time to inquire as to whether my ex would be able to recieve visitors the following day and was told that he (the patient), would not have any way of knowing that until the next day. Attitude? Really? Incredible! We are insisting that he transfer to another hospital as soon as possible! Dont go there if you are looking for nurses that actually care about patients and families. It makes me question the care that he is getting and how he is being treated.

I was forced to be admitted during a move last year. I was literally hyperventilating to the point I wasn getting more than 1/10 of the air I was trying to take in. My O2 level was 82/84.. When I walked into the ER, the only words I could get out of my mouth after standing there hyperventilating for about a minute was" cant breath". The lady at the ER reception desk looked me dead in the face after watching this, and asked me what my name was :( .. grr! Luckily for me another person came out after hearing this and threw me in a wheelchair, and got me hooked up to machines to help start getting air into my lungs. After that they got me up to a room in the ICU and got all of the meds I am on in me. They were GREAT up there! I was so out of it from having acute Pneumonia and just out of a hospital in Florida from a 2 month stay, nearly losing my left arm.. 2 surgeries to save it then getting the infection the brown recluse spider left me.. well, I should have never tried that move and drive from Port Charlotte less than 10 days after being discharged from that experience.. I will say that.. but if it werent for the people at Norwood, I WOULD BE DEAD, PERIOD! Thank you to the ER and ICU staffs there.. I should have written this 8 months ago, but didnt until now. I am healthy as horse again, and happily being a husband and father to 3 children.. and its because the people here pulled me back. AGAIN, THANK YOU!

I recently underwent complete knee replacement surgery at Norwood Hospital and was duly impressed both with process and staff who delivered exceptional service. The pre-surgical program was ever so informative and helped me understand the full process that would ensue. The opportunity to accomplish all pre-surgical testing in one afternoon was an ideal set up especially given the nature of busy schedules we all face. The pre-op nursing was ever so helpful and reassuring. All attending surgical personnel were courteous with the ability to clearly outline procedures and answer questions. During my four days at the hospital I could not have asked for better nursing staff. They were pleasantly attentive, answered questions about the recovery process and provided compassionate and knowledgeable care that was clearly patient centered. Hospital custodial and nutritional staff were engaging and performed their roles with grace and dedication. The chaplains visit was so appreciated esp. on a difficult day following surgery and contributed to the complete care encompassing body, mind and spirit. I would recommend Norwood Hospital unreservedly after this experience and am ever so thankful for the quality of care delivered.
