Bethesda gave our family a bad feeling from day one and ended in a nightmare. My dad went to Bethesda for ventilator weaning after a double lung transplant. My mom was there with him all day every day. I will mention that Im an RN and so am very knowledgeable about what should and shouldnt have been happening in regards to my dads care. Checks by nurses were only to give medications and he was not assisted with repositioning as often has he should have been. Once he was weaned off of the ventilator, he was moved out to the "step down" unit for continued rehab. He was having trouble sleeping at night. So, the doctor tried a couple of different sleeping medications. The last change she made was too high of a dose for him. The staff at night, both nursing and respiratory therapists, didnt recognize that the confusion he was having was due to lack of oxygen. He was given a small amount of supplemental oxygen and then not checked on again. When my mom came in that next morning, she found my dad had removed his gown in his confusion, was lying naked on his bed with the door wide open, unconscious and in the middle of having a cardiopulmonary arrest with no staff in sight. My mom had to be the one to call the Code Blue to get staff to come running. Do not enter!

My father was here for 2 months on the ventilator rehab unit. Dad would sit for 5 hours without anyone checking on him to reposition and change him when we were there. This is required by state to be completed every 2 hours for patients that cannot do it for themselves. (My sisters and I all work in healthcare in either social work, RN or radiology in hospitals.) My mother was there all day every day, and she also would have to find someone to change and reposition him. Some staff were genuine and caring, but just as many were not. Dad would also have scrapes and bumps on his head and face that could not be explained by the nurse, so injury reports were filed after my mom questioned them. He also had an MRI of his head scheduled, and after they transferred him, found out he didnt have it scheduled. Our Dad seemed to give up and no longer tried to communicate with us. What a drop in care when transferred from a Mayo facility...I would not recommend. We were relieved the day we moved him closer to home to a nursing home that had great caring staff.

In Minnesota there isnt a lot of choice for an ltach. It shows because the older facility of Bathesda has seemed under constant repair and breakdowns. At first it seemed awful, cries for help, nurses either sitting around a station or not around at all. But they did do exactly what they needed to for those who needed it! The nurses sitting around were those who are watching for life threatening problems. The other staff were helping patients. The staff remember patients and visitors alike. After a few weeks I was greeted by name by many staff. My father had cardiac arrest for 30 min. Bathesda advocated for my father to insurance. Worked with him sometimes hourly for days. He now walks, talks and can easily beat me at a game of pool in Bathesdas family room. His recovery took 3 months. Youll have to be patient with Bathesda, but they do what is right for those under their care in a friendly and understanding way.

Please do not bring your love ones to this hospital. The level of care is horrible and a lot of the staff are rude. Average waiting time when calling the nurse is 10-15 minutes. They are not staff appropriately as that is their constant excuses. They claim to specialize in respiratory care but assign multiple floors to only one respiratory therapist. I cant count how many accidents almost happen if it wasnt for one of the family member being their 24/7. I feel bad for the patients that does not have family member to be their advocate. Please DO NOT put your love ones in this hospital. The only thing that is good here is the therapy team. One more thing, they will encourage patients and their family members to reach out to their inhouse advocacy team which is a load of bull if you believe they would help. They are inhouse hired employees to "pretend to side with you". Get out of here!!!

I have went there for care right after my car accident and for therapy and they dropped the ball so much and they told me that I would not walk again and to keep working on me would be fraud!because I would not get better! Why would a hospital that is supposed to care for people tell a patient they are a lost cause? ! Taking away all hope is not benefiting anyone!

My fathers treatment was dehumanizing, the social worker was uncompassionate and the nurses unresponsive to my fathers crys for help.

The brain injury unit (4 West) took great care of my father. They are the best at what they do with behavior modification.
