I was there twice in past 6 months. I live in Toms River and have had nothing but extremely bad experiences with the "Toms River Community Hospital"; and have no problem driving out to Ocean Medical Center due to their excellence from the second you walk through the door. When you get to admission, the smiles and kindness are overwhelming. I rarely have ever had to wait longer than 15 minutes to be brought in. ALL OF THE NURSES FROM WHEN THEY TAKE MY VITALS, TO THE CARE I GET WHILE IN EXAM ROOM IS EXCEPTIONAL. I came iin one day recently with a very swollen calf, ankle, foot. Right after meeting the very kind nurse, a P.O. or P.A. (sorry, cant recall which one it was!) came in, and she was also unbelievably kind. She was very thorough in asking questions, and told me she had a concern I had a clot, and ordered an ultrasound. In five minutes..another pleasant and sweet ultrasound technician came in, did the ultrasound, & with a smile wished me well and hope that all went well. I may be writing a lot; but the sheer kindness and care I received, you can truly see that every person that works in this hospital TRULY CARES FOR THEIR PATIENTS, AND TRULY LOVE WHAT THEY DO. Minutes later...the Dr came back to tell me there was no clot. It ended up being an infection; she prescribed Penicillin, and I appreciated so much for all they did for me. I continue to go to Ocean Medical Center when in need of emergency care. The only thing that stinks about living in Toms River... Is if you call and need an ambulance, I ask to be taken to Ocean Medical Center... they will ONLY TAKE YOU TO COMMUNITY MEDICAL CENTER; if I was at risk of dying, or have another Sub Arachnoid Brain Hemmorhage? Id find any means necessary to get to Ocean Medical!!! (I was taken to Community for extreme pain in back of skull. They did no testing @ all, said it was psychological. Hubby drove me back hrs later, demanded a cats can, which showed the hemmorhaging. Sorry for that side note, but if it werent for my husband demanding the tests they said I didnt need, because it was a psychological problem?!? I would be dead @ the age of 34.) I ended spending a month @ Jefferson University Neurological Hospital. The Drs said that had they done the test the first time, I wouldnt have had a 50/50 chance of survival. I pulled through. I swore to myself I would never step foot in that hospital again. I havent since that incident that has left me with extreme migraines and very poor memory loss. Now 42, and have quite a number of medical problems; I am sure you will see me again!

My husband was to have hernia surgery there. After a catheter was inserted incorrectly, he started to bleed. The surgery was not done and a urologist was called in. He removed the catheter and inserted a second catheter then sent my husband home with it to be removed in 5 days. (It was a Thursday and the dr. was not in his office until Monday). The nurse told me to change the catheter bag when we got home. My husband was in severe pain and could not sit down. I changed the bag when we got home and from that point, nothing came into the bag. I called the urologists office and his staff said this was normal. When the pain became worse, I called them back and said we wanted to have the catheter removed. They said to go to Emergency. I asked them to call the urologist and they said the Emergency would call him. When we got to Emergency, the nurse took his vitals and said wed have to wait because it was very busy. He could not sit and was not supposed to be standing since he had a bone spur on his achilles and was supposed to wear a boot. He stood in the midst of the Emergency room with an empty catheter bag attached to his penis for well over an hour. I called the surgeons office and they did not respond. I asked the Emergency room nurse to call the urologist and she said I should do that. Finally, I said we would be leaving and I was told "You can do what you want, honey". there was not once ounce of compassion or care shown for my husband, especially in view of the fact that this problem was caused by someone on the hospital staff. Deplorable and sad. We went to a different hospital and they removed the catheter. They were very crowded as well yet they showed much more compassion and caring to the plight of the patient, especially since the catheter was, in fact, blocked. I shutter to think what would have happened had we not gone to the second hospital to have the catheter removed. Needless to say, we will not be returning to Ocean Medical Center.

This hospital is an absolute embarrassment on the way they run and operate. Wife arrived at 9:35pm with chest pains and numbness to her left arm. Receptionist was very good. Got my wife in right away for an ekg. After that, complete disaster from that point. Wife was in er for 3 hours after they decided they are going to keep her for longer observation. Then they tell us she will getting a room. We waited another 6 hours before they decided to move us to a room. Guess what? It wasnt a room, they moved us upstairs to a hallway because they didnt have any rooms available. Which in fact they could have told us that first thing when they decided they were going to keep her. We would have chosen to go to Jersey shore, which is what I should have done in the first place. So here we are at 6:45am my wifes room is a hallway where all we hear is other sick or ill people coughing or in agony. I get it, its a hospital but patient services is an absolute joke. In fact their keeping her for observation and they dont even have the blood pressure/ heart rate monitor hooked up. What are they keeping her for observation to observ all the ill from the hallway. And of course we have no choice but to have to pay for services like this. There should be away insurance can deny them based on their professional level of accommodations. I will be writing a letter to the state board and health boards. If your thinking of attending this Hosputal think twice and go to Jersey Shore. The only reason we chose this hospital is because my sister in law works here and she raves about it. Well she can rave all she wants because its an absolute embarrassment.

It was the absolute best to date I have had 30+ orthopedic surgeries at OMC. Everything had changed and everyone on the orthopedic floor were wonderful. Introducing themselves explaining what was going on and keeping my pain in check after a total hip replacement. First of those! The anesthesiaologist stopped back the two days I was there. That was a first. Concern was for I am a chronic pain patient due to all the surgeries. Gave me something I never had before and it helped greatly. Then on Friday Aug 4th day of being released I was rudely awakened. (Dont sleep much). Buy a PCA named Pamela. I had to urinate badly and yet wasnt given a chance to do so. So my BP was elevated. Next thing I know Im given a pill which I didnt know and found out it was for urinating. Thats all I did all day. Thank you Pamela. Kept strapping BP cuff on so tight it hurt. Then she calls me grumpy and at that point I was. Took out pain I V. Went to PT. And was forgotten about. Had to keep asking for my oral meds as it had beef over four hours since my I V was out. Pamela delailed my release as long as she could. It was after five pm before I got my papers from nurse. Horrible day hence the four stars. Ashame one person can screw up a otherwise great stay. Vet these people out. No compassion and want to run your life. Also keep your snide remarks to yourself.
