We took our greyhound to Rothman Animal hospital today and had the first truly bad experience in the 3 years weve been taking our dog there. DO NOT ALLOW YOUR DOG TO BE SEEN BY DR. ESSER. Everyone else we have dealt with (especially the vet tech staff and front desk) have been nothing but pleasant. The lovely vet tech (who seems to check us in every time and really loves our dog!) first said that we should ask for a distemper (titer) test from Dr. Esser. The implication was that he would not even offer the test, only give the vaccination. Then Dr. Esser came in. After some blatant misstatements about greyhounds (weight, heart rate, etc... the red flag went up that he didnt understand the breed) he then explained a NEW lymes disease vaccine. He said that they were recommending it. I listened to his speech about the vaccine and had already made up my mind that we did not want it. With greyhounds being so sensitive to things like flea and tick prevention and anesthesia, I knew a only a year of testing was not enough for me. He never asked if we wanted it, so I was never given the chance to refuse. He implied that she would be given a test for Lymes disease and then I assumed we would be offered the vaccine (at which time I would refuse). The exam began and our dog was very scared, so we focused on calming her down. Then two shots came. I assumed they were the distemper shots. I had to assume, because he didnt say what they were before or during the shots! HE DID NOT TELL US WHAT HE WAS INJECTING INTO OUR DOG! I realized we should have asked, but with a scared dog on the table, we were a bit distracted. Of course he gave her both the distemper and the Lymes vaccine. He came in and told us she had to come back for her second vaccine. I was angry and told him plainly that with greyhounds, things like this could cause more problems. I asked what sort of reactions we should be looking for, and he said there would be no reactions! All vaccines have the potential for a reaction! He was completely unapologetic. The only apology we got was from the front desk staff. This doctor was unprofessional and unclear. I personally believe that this vaccine (unless you have a hairy dog living deep in the woods in PA) is a racket if you use flea and tick preventative (like we do) and regularly check your dog for ticks (like we do). To be clear, Ill continue to use Rothman Animal Hospital, as our overall experience has been good. But I will always in the future request that we NOT BE SEEN BY DR. ESSER.

The drain
In making any judgments it is always important to have all of the facts. I am a current employee of RAH and am very disturbed by Mr. Haks inaccurate statements. We are very competitive with our pricing. Some products and services we may be more costly and some are less than other vets in the area. Unfortunately due to substantial increase in drug costs from the pharmaceutical companies , our drug prices have gone up as well. We can not compete, price wise, with the large pharmacies because we dont buy in the volume they do. We never FORCE our clients to buy from us . That is illegal and unethical. Our clients can receive an Rx that they can fill at the pharmacy of their choice. We recognize the increasing costs in the veterinarian field. Clients sometimes cant afford or choose not to treat their pets. As a result in these increased cost of our drugs and supplies from our vendors, we have implemented a loyalty program. Our clients can receive a $100 loyalty credit on their account. Some clients have used this credit for services or treatments that they might have been able to afford. We also run monthly promotions such as free vaccines, discounts on grooming, discounts on dental, etc. Our current vets have been with us for many years. Our last veterinarian left over 8 years ago for family leave. It is also our office policy that staff members remain strictly professional with our clients. When selecting any veterinary provider, one should be cost conscience , BUT quality veterinary care is the most important factor.

I made an appointment with another vet to bring my new puppy in for a check up, when I showed up they told me I did not have an appointment with them (I made the call the day before..) they told me maybe I had made the appointment at Rothman and its right down the street. So I got back in my car and headed for Rothman. When I got there, I was not in their system (and shouldnt have been I made he appointment with the first place I had gone to!!) I asked them if they could still fit me in as I had hired a babysitter to watch my children so i could bring our new puppy to the vet and I wasnt sure if she was sick or not. Even though it was 8pm, they fit us in! Everyone from the girls at the front desk to the vet assistants to the doctor (Dr. Garcia) were wonderful, wonderful people. They all were amazing with my new little puppy and seemed to genuinely care for my dog even tho they just met her. Very excited to have found them even if by mistake ;)

Wow customer service was amazing! I was refered by a a friend who takes their animals to rothman. I was greeted by a Bridget or Brittany I think her name was, her personality over the phone won me over immediately! She helped me with information about flea and tick preventative and was very kind and went out of her way to make sure I was given the right information, she said she was new but from the way she carried the conversation I would have thought she was a professional for years. Wish everywhere I went there was a Bridget to assist me! Facility was clean and taken care of, pricing is kind of expensive but would pay it due to the staff being so helpful. Manager shelli is off, need a new manager but other then her my experience was very good. Definitely after purchasing my flea and tick meds will be coming back!

I agree with Jax. Overpriced. Diagnosis is not thorough. Ladies up front her rude and unpleasant. No actual complaints about the docs, but general experience was always a bad one. Switched vets after a few visits. When my puppy was neutered, they called and left a message after the fact to say they had removed some baby teeth while he was under. What?! If this was my child and you were taking out her appendix, would you take something else out while you were in there? Then they charged me another $100 for that. This was 3 years ago, but the whole procedure was something like $400. Insanity. When I complained, they talked down to me: " Having baby teeth & adult teeth is not good, he could have gotten an infection." Yea, well that is something we could have talked about after you removed the poor little guys testicles.

The staff was very nice, but old animal adopters, beware. I went in for a simple follow up on my cat (she has never had any health issues all her life and only had a minor infection in her ears), then I was told that she needed her tooth removed. I was prepared to pay half of a thousand, plus "other possible factors" that may increase the price. I instead consulted with my cats previous vet (I moved to Nj from Pa), my vet scoffed the very first second she had a look. Turns out my cat never needed any tooth extractions. A simple cleaning that cost $100 and she already has sparking white teeth again. The thought that this place tried to make my cat lose teeth for money, makes me lose all my respect for whatever business theyre trying to run.
