In past 25 years we have taken our six miniature schnauzers, one cocker, and one mini greyhound-pom mix to Dr. Downes. But we just took our first rescue cairn terrier/mini schnauzer mix for her first exam. She is a three year old who was found on the streets of Dallas and was not in good condition, not spayed and suffering from parasites, fleas and anemia. Our little streetwalker was a bit fear aggressive, biting and needed a good grooming. Here is what her first exam from Dr. Downes included: total physical exam (patiently given without getting bit and including dental), heartworm check, complete review of all known vaccines and preventatives, recheck of anemia levels (what a relief, improvement doubled) and confirmation of food choice. We were told on the spot that the heartworm check was negative and given a single dose of Trifexis, along with a single dose of Braveco. We were set up with refills from Vet Source. In the four days we had our new charge, she had bitten both of us when we grabbed her from the side or back. So Dr. Downes gave us a free slip leash and demonstrated how to use it so that we would not get bitten when we picked her up. We agreed on some further care steps after her spay operation. And we agreed on the age of three years and Dr. Downes explained her rationale. Animal Services had indicated from 2-5 years of age. We got an “Exam Report Card” on the spot – 29 detailed items of all that had been done in this first comprehensive exam. Well – not all that had been done… We had a groomer appointment set up for the next day at another facility, but we were asking how we could keep a bite from happening. Dr. Downes’ groomer (Dal Rock Pet Grooming Services) was in house while we were there and took our little girl, gave her a quick bath, hand clipped a lot of the mess off, thoroughly cleaned out all of the hair from her ears, and trimmed a very unruly head into a cute little angel face. And the groomer did not get bit – she was so gentle. So we cancelled our other groomer appointment and set the next two sessions here so that slow steady progress is made without adding more fear. We were there for an hour and a half. The cost? Under $100 for both well canine professional exam/consult and grooming services. As we were checking out, we mentioned we were having trouble with our patient portal access. The receptionist fixed our problem on the spot and emailed a detailed report and bill of services, which included pending reminders along with the Exam Report Card. You would be hard pressed to find better, more caring or more affordable quality care than here!!

Dr. Downes and Dr. Hurley were great! Its hard to find any vet that will work with chickens, but they gave all of their attention to helping me, and spent hours researching treatments, effects, and withdrawal times. Keeping my flock as organic and natural as possible is important to me and my customers, and the vets here are really doing a fantastic job of helping me to do this.
