If I could give Dr Downes 10 stars I would. I rescued a cat, Tooter, from a bad situation and after a bit he developed a large growth on his abdomen. I took him to the vet I was using at the time and he performed a surgery. Lab results were non specific, only lymph tissue. Within a month the growth came back to double, triple the previous size. Vet wanted to do another surgery, I wanted second opinion. Here is where Dr Downes comes in, she was highly recommended by a friend. She took a biopsy and sent it to a pathologist in Oregon, I believe. It came back as histoplasmosis. Its a fungal type infection that Tooter got from breathing in spores released from the ground where either birds or bats were. OMG, I had rescued him from a little old lady where he was an inside cat. I had been there cleaning and cleaning her house, ripping out carpet, etc. We humans can breathe in the spores and we can get histoplasmosis too. I went to get checked and sure enough it was in my lungs. I had to go on an anti fungal med for a month. The average person can many times fight off this infection but if your immune system is compromised, and you dont know you have it, it can be fatal. Well I have rheumatoid arthritis and have been on medications that lower the immune system. I mean medicines that even check if you have this infection before they give it to you. So.....if I had not met Dr Downes, who was the right vet, who knows what would have happened. Tooter did better for a while with meds but eventually succumbed to the disease. He had it for a long time. He was a wonderful kitty. RIP Tooter. Then I referred my friend to Dr Downes because her dog Nicky was not helped by other vets. Dr Downes turned him around too and eventually saved his life after he had a health emergency. So you see, I love me some Dr Downes. The Animal Hospital of Rowlett is a state of the art diagnostic hospital with all of the up to date technology. If you want the utmost in care. Go here!

My wife called around to find the best price to neuter our cat, Animal Hospital of Rowlett was not the cheapest, but they were close and friendly on the phone so we went there. The original quoted price was $129. When my wife got there they said it is a $129 but they had to charge $60 more for "mandatory blood work". They then told her they recommended getting additional blood work for $80 more to make sure the cat wouldnt "die during surgery because of an adverse reaction to the anesthesia" She was then asked if she would like the vet to use a laser instead of a scalpel for just "a little bit more". Finally, they charged an extra $25 for pain medication. In the end the bill was over $320 for a simple neutering, some of it was because my wife was susceptible to the up-sell, but some of it was due to the vets dishonesty. They were very nice, even when I went and talked to them about the ridiculous price; we had no complaints in that regard. They treated our cat very well and he was fine, I just think you should be prepared to say "no" about a half a dozen times in order to get a good price for a very basic, 10 minute service. Ryan

I would be cautious using this vet. I brought my sweet, 3 year old dog, into the vet about 4 weeks ago (maybe 5). Our dog had been gaining weight quickly, but not eating. She was lethargic and her fur was becoming dull and thin. The vet told us that we need to change her diet. I explained that our dog rarely eats. She then went into asking if "my husband slips the dog burgers and fries when Im not home". I politely explained this was not the case. Anyways, she did check her thyroid and when that came back normal, she once again told us that we just need to change her diet. So we did. Our sweet, young dog died very suddenly three weeks after this appointment. We will never know what caused her death, but I am confident if the vet would have taken me a little more seriously in regards to our dogs symptoms, we could have had more time with our girl. I do not want this for anyone elses furbaby. If you have a gut feeling something is wrong, go get a second opinion. Be cautious with this place...

Had to take one of my pups to the vet for the first time for something other than routine shots (his body was jerking and he wouldnt look at me when I called him). I just moved to the area and looked up the closest animal clinic, and was lucky to find this place. Customer service was excellent, from the time I called until I picked up my dog at closing time. I arrived at the clinic at noon, which is when the doctors go to lunch, but was told I could leave my dog and a doctor would look at him before going to lunch. As I was driving home, Dr. Carter called me to say she had taken a look at my dog and told me what she thought might be wrong with him and how she was going to treat him. I received an update about 2 hours later and picked up my dog right before closing so that the doctor had time to observe and make sure my dog was well enough to go home. The doctor and staff communicated with me through every step of this scary process, and I am so grateful to have a great veterinarian close by.

I feel like these people only want to make money. Recently, I boarded my dog there. I called to ask how much to board for a day. They told me 20.00. I said great, I only needed her to stay overnight because they were spraying for mosquitos in our area. When I took her in at 6:30 p.m. they told me she had not had her Bordotello shot and needed it. I said okay give the shot. I picked her up at 8:00 am the next morning. My bill was 104.00. They charged $70.00 for an exam and shot (even though they had already spoken to her current vet and knew she was up do date) and 40.00 for boarding. They said since her 13 hours there was across two different days it was 20 per day. Not sure why they didnt just tell me it cost 40.00 in the first place. In addition, they could not find her leash or collar and said they would call me when they found it. They still have not found it and apparently they are not responsible for lost items.

I am grateful to Dr. Huber and the staff at AHR for the consult last week regarding the diagnosis and prognosis that we got from our regular vet for my Siamese cat, Bobble, who was in end-stage renal failure. I appreciate their frankness about her chances, as it helped me make the decision as to whether to put her through something I knew would stress her terribly and might even hasten her death, in an attempt to save her. Bobble passed away peacefully in her sleep two days afterward. I’m very glad that she was here at home with me by her side instead of in a hospital, hooked to IVs and catheters. Some doctors might have urged me to have her undergo the treatment in order to collect the fees. I appreciate that Dr. Huber didnt do that. What he told me certainly wasnt what I wanted to hear, but its better to know the truth than to be given false hope. His kindness and that of the staff won’t be forgotten.
