It is interesting to see the dichotomy between these reviews. I am sixty-five years old and have had four stomach surgeries. Between California and here I have seen many gastroenterologists. Doctor Karam is the best I have had. He is all business but if you ask or tell him what you want and that you need more of his time, he will make every effort to satisfy you. As far as his staff goes I dont put up with somebody being rude and will report it to the doctor if needed. But it takes a lot to upset me, I am retired from Los Angeles Sheriffs Department and am used to people being mad at me. All businesses go through employees due to issues like the ones reported in these reviews, but I dont think that is enough to stop me from seeing a great doctor. When dealing with doctors, occasionally you need them to listen to your side of the story and what you expect from them. So you need to be more assertive when the need arises. I have had a doctor tell us that my mother-in-law was going to be on a breathing tube he was going to insert in her neck and that she would be in hospice care for the rest of her life. I told him we have power of attorney and that he was not going to put a breathing tube in her and that he was to stop the pain medicine. As our argument progressed he was telling me he was the expert and that I should listen to him, but I told him we were the experts with regard to her. It has been six years since the argument and she is fine, so if you feel they are making the wrong decision or you want them to address something that is more important to you, tell them. I would highly recommend Doctor Karnam to anyone. He knows his stuff and has helped me with issues outside of my stomach problems. He is very knowledgeable and smart. Great Doctor!

I was diagnosed with Celiac disease by my doctor and my wife scheduled me. I read a few not-so-positive reviews and was very much not excited for this appointment. I can say that I was genuinely VERY PLEASANTLY SURPRISED in every way. The staff was all very friendly, polite, and quick. The facilities were new and looked fantastic. Dr. Karnam was fantastic. Very quick (which was what I needed), but insistent that I check into a few things with the new diagnosis. What stood out to me was when my wife started asking questions about my 7 year old boy (whose blood work had come back the previous day) and the strong possibility that he too is Celiac. Dr. Karnam got on his phone, gave my wife his cell number, and said that hed be getting in touch with a friend of his to see what he could do. Long story short. He followed through with his associate and were being seen much sooner than had we not received a strong referral from Dr. Karnam. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND The Gut Whisperer! I dont give many reviews, but this one I felt strongly about posting. A+ Service!

Several Years Back- My Mother was treated by Dr. Karnam. He treated her for Crohns Disease. He had her on very high dosages of Prednisone and Pentassa as well as an anti-rejection medication. I went with her to all her appointments, and once when my mother went to the restroom and he came in- he started directing questions to me as if I were my mother. We had been in to see him at LEAST 10 times at that point. About 3 weeks before my wedding my mother made some appointments to come in because of swelling in her abdomen. He suggested she could be Pregnant... and laughed.... Increased her dosage of meds and sent us on our way. About a week and ahalf before my wedding my mother finally went to the E.R. because of the swelling and intense pain. She had a bowel obstruction and almost died. Dr. Karnam completely shirked his responsibilities as a Dr. and violated the trust we placed in him. If you value your loved ones, steer clear.

Dr. Karnam first saw me in the ER and expressed deep concern to my fiance about how serious my condition really was. I honestly could have killed my self just by eating food. After 20+ years of choking on food/pills, having acid reflux & heartburn, I finally have my health back. I have had my throat dilated 3 times, and will need to continue going every year or so, to monitor. With every procedure, I was in and out. The wait time to get into a room was reasonable. Two times I wasnt even finished filling out the paperwork and they were wheeling me back to the procedure room. Dr. Karnam has an amazing heart. He is very thoughtful and understanding. Great sense of humor. Very honest & genuine. I have been trying to get other family members to go. When you are going through scary and possibly invasive procedures, having a doctor who cares, and explains everything, takes the stress out of it.

Dr. Karnum staff is awful. The staff was extremly rude and not helpful, everytime I called it seemed like I was bothering them. Its scary how disorganized they are, my husband was scheduled for an endoscopy and they never sent his information over to the hospital nor did his office give us any instruction on what he could or couldnt do before the endoscopy. When I called them the day before for instruction no one had any idea what was going on. They also never called in the prescriptions that Dr. Karnum had prescribed. I am writing this review because I had my husband go to Dr. Karnum based on others reviews, and I dont feel Dr. Karnum is that amazing. He was really over booked so we waited a long time and I felt like he wanted to talk more about our personal life then my husbands problem. I was just not super impressed with him or his staff.

I know Dr. Karnam is a brilliant doctor, and highly educated. But I was completely frustrated with the little time he would sit down with us and simply talk to myself and my son. Each visit we had with him literally took about 4 minutes. They resulted in him offering no insight or ideas of what is causing my son incredible abdominal pain, just his plan to order more expensive tests and come back in a month. Sorry, I try to see the positive in everyone and I so wanted him to help my son. Im sure he is able to help many people but all we got out of this experience were no answers and many medical bills.

Me and my wife both went to him for a colonoscopy, his staff is very unorganized. We got instructions just before the deadline of starting them, and my wife didnt get the prescription until a few phone calls the day before she needed to start the pre-treatment. He was very nice at the actual colonoscopy, but said to schedule an appointment two weeks later for a follow up. However, his staff either 1) doesnt answer the phone or 2) answers the phone says they are busy then never calls you back. Neither of us got our followup appointment after 3 times calling, at which time we both gave up.

Dr Karnam is one of the best hepatologists and gastroenterologists in the state. It is a little know fact that he authored a section in Up to Date on liver disease. (Up to Date is trusted unbiased medical subscription service that gets authors from the top of each specialty). He is also expert on eosinophilic esophagitis, inflammatory bowel disease and colon cancer prevention. I personally practice internal medicine and have been very pleased with his care of my patients.
