This emergency room is horrid in my opinion. I went with severe pain they checked me in about 10 min and took me to another waiting room in the emergency room. I was still in a lot of pain were I had to wait about 4 or more hours to get a room no one checked on me or asked how I was. Then a lady came in and asked me personal information within others hearings ( birthday, social number etc)I tried to whisper so no one can hear hard to do when a small wall was in place. It was a nightmare trying to get comfortable in chairs that were as hard as a rock! They finally took me to a room and on my way they wanted me to visit the rest room. It was so nasty there was pee all over the toilet and on the floor the sink was just as dirty. The bathroom smelled nasty. Then I went to my room were a nurse checked me in and left me in the room for another 3 hours no one came in except to run test. No one asked if I needed to go to the bathroom or if I was ok. I finally got dressed again and went to the same bathroom wich was even in worse condition and that is hard to believe. A md never came to see me only his helper. She told me that even tho I am in pain she did offer pain medication only I dont like pain meds so I didnt want any. When my husband and I talk to the nurse about what was wrong she said they had no idea what it was. That what they thought it was it wasnt and that is that. My husband asked her about another issue and she said they have no idea and that at least it isnt what they thought it was. And then I was sent home. They did not try real hard to find out what my problem was. After all that time I felt this hospital smelled and looked nasty. The people there was rude only 1 person was nice. They didnt care to help me with my problem at all!

I was at first very pleased with the care my husband received but as time went on, I found that there is a great lack of communication between the nurses, physical therapy, Physicians Assistants, case worker(s), doctors and any one else involved with his care. It also seemed that once he was showing signs of improvement, the nurses seemed to forget that he was in the room. Fresh linens were never brought to him, we as family has to ask for towels and washcloths to bath him. Only one or two offered to help him bath, feed him, take care of daily needs. Matt Adkins was wonderful. The doctor told him he could shower. He asked someone to help with a shower, nurse said ok and never showed her face again. I helped him bath, no shower for fear of him falling. Grace offered to help him but he was being discharged that night. I am just really disappointed that the care seemed to go down hill the longer he had to stay and no one communicated with each other on his care and after care. The PA stated she would call the case worker to advise his discharge but when contacted, no one informed him of my husbands discharge therefore the physical therapy has not begun. Someone should really review the polices for communicating between the shifts, departments, Physicians, their assistants and those responsible for aftercare. We both are just feeling like he fell between the cracks and no one is taking responsibility. suggestions to family members: stay on top of the care your family member is suppose to receive and make sure it is followed. If not, then stay on someone until the care is received.

I was seen in the ER today in pain from a kidney stone and UTI (with severe pain and blood in the urine)! We usually go to RMH, but with flu season in full swing and the ER wait time being so long, we figured we could get in faster at LG! My husband and I were both very disappointed in our experience. While there, an adult male pulled his IV out and waked out of the hospital and re-entered thru the ER doors! He seemed disoriented! When they took him back to his room, not one person had noticed he was gone and what he had done! Not one person asked me if I was on any medications, didnt ask about my medical history... they started an IV in my arm (but it was never used! No fluids, nothing for pain! They only drew blood from it!). We were there over 5 hours and was not even offered water or anything for pain! I have never had such little contact from nurses in an ER and NEVER not been asked about my medical history or what medicines I take! A majority of the people in the waiting room was there for something mild (a cold, sinus infection, rash, etc). There were only a few people there for emergencies or extremely sick or in pain! Im so shocked how many people came to the ER, when they could have gone to velocity care! They took away valuable time for those in true need of ER treatment! When I asked a worker about this, they shook their head and said, " they come here so they dont have to pay"! Im so disappointed that people have come to this! It is so unfair people use the ER like this, taking away precious time and care, needed for true emergencies!

Hated everything about it!! The nursing staff is rude and disrespectful! My nephew is 3 had a 103.9 degree fever and because he cred and screamed a couple of times the nurse decided to take it upon herself to Google the name of some parenting book, hand it to my sister and say "it helped me to be a better parent and better control my child". #1 . He is 3 and very sick, #2. A high fever causes pain (which as an RN she should know) so yes he is going to scream, he is a baby!! #3. What happened to standards of care?? You empathize with your patients not judge them and not push off your own views! I Called back to file a complaint on my sisters behalf, as shes attending her sick child and cant. 1st call I was transferred and told to ask for the charge nurse, during which I was placed on hold 3 different times by 3 different nursing staff, with the promise of " yes mam Ill get her for you right now" and was on hold for a total of 23 minutes! Hung up called back and demanded that I be connected to a supervisor. This said supervisor stated and I quote " well mam, maybe she was onto something, and maybe Roanoke Memorial would be a better suited place of care for your family"...dang straight RMH is better suited, their wait time may be a bit longer but at least they are not rude, and they care about the people they take care of! Lewis Gale will never touch a soul in my family again they are rude, have a disgusting bedside manner and need to relearn their "standards of care"!! -a pisst off auntie

While visiting Virginia, I became very ill and was taken to Lewis-Gale Medical Center via ambulance in excruciating pain and extreme shortness of breath. The ambulance crew and ER physicians and staff were fantastic. They understood my anxiety and were able to calm my fears. From the symptoms it was thought that I was having a heart attack and all appropriate measures were taken quickly, always being aware of my high anxiety level. Dr. Goldstein made sure I understood a procedure before it was performed. I was sent to ICU, where I stayed for 3 days with excellent care. One of the nurses commented that I was "the perfect patient", to me they were the perfect nurses and doctors. Once the true cause of my distress was determined, Dr. Oluwaseun did an excellent job in explaining to both me and my family members what the problem was, how it happened and what the course of action was. He has a great bedside, explains things in laymen terms and takes the extra time with the patient. When transferred to PCU on second floor, I received the same professional, thoughtful and caring treatment from the nurses and staff as I received in ICU. Salem, VA is lucky to have such a fine medical facility as Lewis-Gale Medical Center. Jean M.
