(No stars). I had a leaking vein in my ankle. The volunteer ambulance wrapped it and took me via ambulance to Southside. I waited for about 2 hours, when a PA finally came by, looked at the vein, (which had stopped bleeding by then), wiped it clean and applied some skin glue. After 20 minutes, he came back, applied another layer of glue, and disappeared again. After another half hour, he came back with a "doctor", who looked at the wound for -no exaggeration -less than 20 seconds, and said, "That doesnt look too bad. Follow up with your doctor", and I was released. A few weeks after that I received a bill from the hospital for somewhere in the neighborhood of 1775 dollars. Some of this my insurance paid, and I was left with a balance of 700 some odd dollars, which I agreed to pay, 50 dollars per month. While I was paying it, I received another bill for around 572 dollars, which was from, (I was to learn later), the doctor that looked at my wound. I assumed that it was all part of the same hospital bill. After I finished paying off my 50 dollars per month, I started getting letters from a collection agency. After contacting them, and after getting the false information from them that my insurance company didnt pay the claims, I contacted my insurance company (Oxford), who told me that the insurance company DID pay, based on their "agreement" with the hospital, although they couldnt (or didnt want to) tell me how much it was that they paid. The insurance company informed me that the one ER visit was billed 3 ways! The PA who charged me $1074 for the application of the glue (which apparently must have contained a good amount of Gold), the doctor, who charged me $448 for the 20 second look, and the hospital, which charged me $1744 for...? Cot rental for 3 hours at $580 per hour? The administrative costs involved in making a photocopy of my insurance card? So basically, they see an ER patient NOT as someone that needs medical attention, but as an ATM machine, and a gold credit card with no limit! Total billed for a 3 hour visit involving approximately 20 minutes of medical care? $3266!!!! I wonder if the AMA has anything to say about this? When youre in the ER, youre at their mercy! They have the vultures in there, circling around, waiting to pick your bones clean! And theres nothing you can do. They dont even have to worry about "unnecessary medical attention" to drive up the bill -they simply charge whatever they want for whatever minimal care they can give. $ 3266, WITH INSURANCE! (Thanks obama!) Bunch of thieves! By the way, I wanted to give "no stars", but the system wont let me post without doing so.

Last year, I came here when I had chicken pox (yeah chicken pox at 19 is no fun). The first thing they did was bring a chair outside the first set of doors and had me sit there with a mask on. That was cold and awkward. Finally they brought me to a quarantine room or whatever, but the big glass doors werent even aligned (there was open space where they slid past each other at the bottom). I thought that was pretty careless. Fast forward to last visit. Yay strep throat! I had taken a Tylenol a few hours before I went there, so my fever was gone when they first checked my vitals. however, since I was waiting for about 2 hours, it came back while I was in the waiting room. Once I finally got in and on a bed I waited.. the tv controller hardly even worked. I tried to go to sleep but the fever was giving me bad chills. When the doctor came around, he asked if I was having various symptoms, I said yes, and he said they didnt catch a fever when I got there.. And I told him it was because of Tylenol and that it had come back while I was waiting. He didnt even bother to check my temperature or offer something to help or anything. And since I had to walk home (I live a mile away) that was no fun to deal with, especially because the weather had suddenly got way warmer after the most annoying winter ever. Never coming here again. Ill take the extra distance to Good Sam from now on.. EDIT: I forgot to mention he said hed give me a note for work, but when I went through my papers, there was no note. So I call.. to find out.. wait on hold for a while.. someone finally picks up! "uhh who are you waiting for?" some more waiting.. then they pretty much told me he never wrote one so theres nothing we can do for you What am I supposed to do when I lose my job for missing so much work? Suddenly I wish there was something to select BELOW poor.

The hospital is one of the cleanest up to date hospitals we ever had the privilege to stay at. They have 24 hour visits and made sure that even though I was not a patient, I was comfortable and got to sit by my wifes side for her entire stay. I was even given a lounge chair to sleep in every day and night. I was never once asked to leave. Matter fact, I was given complimentary breakfast, lunch and dinner and got to eat with my wife at every meal,( which by the way the food was excellent). I would like to give it up to the RNs on 6 tower: Theresa, Lauren, kate, Jess, Ashley, Aunderes, Gretchen, Laura, and all the rest I failed to mention. Even the E.R. department has been completely redone. The doctors there were equally important and attentive to getting us through this difficult time in our life. Thank you to everyone for going above and beyond the call of duty. May god bless you all. I recomend any one in distress, injured or just not sure where to go when a loved one is in need of medical attention. Dont even hesitate a second thought. Southside Hospital in Bayshore New York is the place to go immediately!!! Thank you again for all you have done in getting my wife well again.

The worst experience in an Emergency room ever. The Emergency room was packed like cattle in a boxcar. Was there 12 hours and left with out any help and a blood pressure of 158/102. Doctor never touched me. Nurse after giving IV bag of fluids never came back to see if I was doing okay. Was on a stretcher near the doors coming into Emergency room with the constant slamming of the door and cold air blowing in. Aids seemed like I was a bother when I had to use bathroom. Bathroom was disgusting/very dirty. Not only that security was ushering visitors with many children in to the room which as was you could not even move.. Strollers and babies which I could not believe. I think this Emergency room should be investigated. I dont think anyone could believe how bad it is till you see it like I saw it. Left with no help and as we were leaving another Man that had been there was also so upset as he had been there since 12:00 and was leaving with no help. While there two of the patients had been in the Emergency room for 30hrs~uncalled for.I will never go to this Emergency room again and would tell others to go some place other if they can.
