Joey is THE BEST PT Ive ever been seen by! I met Joey actually through Instagram. I started training at D1 in May 2014 and thats how we connected because he was interested in checking D1 out. He asked me how my trainings were at that time (May 2015). This is when I recently had an injury from training (I fell off the stability ball as I was doing chest presses with two 20-lb dumbbells. Stability ball fell backwards and I hit the ground pretty hard on my back). Thus, injured my back. Joey offered to see me for a consultation. You wouldnt believe how bad my neck/back was because I could barely move. First session, Joey tested my movement with the FMS test. I failed horribly on that test. I could barely balance and I realized as much as I thought I had good form, I had horrible form (partly too due to pain - so thats what I believe). Throughout the last several months, wed been working on addressing the pain through him using the Graston Technique (which is pretty darn cool)! The best technique though I found pretty awesome is the Myofascial Decompression. That technique is far awesome, even if I walk away with all kinds of marks (some people may not appreciate but I think its pretty cool story to tell). My neck and back started to feel a lot better and of course thats when my knees started to give out. Wed been working on my knees as well and addressing the pain. With a combination of Graston, Myofascial decompression and exercises, weve addressed the pain. What Ive learned with Joey is that we can address the pain all we want, but if Im not making an effort to move in good form, Ill never get better. Every week Id continue to do the exercises that Joey asked me to do because I knew that if I did those exercises, Id move better. HE WAS RIGHT. I made it my medication to exercise and do Joeys exercises on top of the exercises I already did during my trainings. For a person like myself, when Joey asked to take a few days, it was REALLY HARD, but I knew he knew best and I am glad I listened. I stepped back tremendously with my trainings; however, it benefited me 10x more than if I continued to do all my trainings. Ive substituted the days I didnt train with my PT exercises and still exercised at least 6-7 days. In the last month, Im moving pain free all thanks to Joey. For the first time since MAY 2015, I am finally able to do sit-ups, pull-ups, push-ups and running, but more importantly get up from bed without rolling! I continue to see Joey because now its all about maintenance and injury prevention which is what we want. Now that I am not injured, Id like to keep it that way. I do have a lot of work in regards to mobility and making sure to stretch so that I dont tense up. I have an awesome PT, teacher and new friend and Im super glad to have met my AWESOME PT Joey! Thanks Joey for reaching out to me. Thank you for fixing me. Thank you for being an awesome PT. I appreciate all your work and all your expertise. I look forward to continuing to see you so that I can continue to be pain free but to continue to MOVE and grow as an athlete (not official but I count myself as one!). If you need a phenomenal PT, you need to contact Joey! You wont regret it! Youll thank me some day :)

Before going to Joey, I was struggling with back pain for about 7 years. I did not begin to do anything about it until 3 years had passed when I was about 14, which was a huge mistake. After consulting multiple sports medicine doctors, I tried two different physical therapists and a personal trainer who did not help. I felt that they were treating me for my pain based on the textbook symptoms I must be experiencing rather than what I was actually feeling. Eventually, I decided to give up and just deal with the pain. This meant that I had days where I could barely get out of bed, I could not walk to my classes (or anywhere) without pain, and it began to take a serious emotional toll on me. As time went on, I decided to consult my doctor again. He referred me to three neurosurgeons (three so I could get multiple opinions) and this is when I realized that my pediatrician was suggesting that I look into a surgical solution. I went to the appointments with the neurosurgeons and was told that fusing the two vertebrae where my pain is located was my option. Two of the neurosurgeons were willing to do it at my age (at the time I was 17), while the third told me to try more physical therapy. At this point, I was overwhelmed, disappointed, and angry, so once again, I stopped searching for a solution. Thats when my friend recommended Joey to me. I called and was lucky to get an appointment quickly, and after the first session I knew that this was going to work. Since starting PT with Joey roughly seven months ago, I have gone from having debilitating pain to almost none at all. Joey is kind and intelligent, I learn something new every time I go. He takes the time to listen to how I feel when I arrive at the clinic and treats me accordingly, which in turn helps me complete core strengthening exercises without pain. Now, as an 18 year old heading off to college, I am confident that I can continue to use exercises Ive learned from Joey to strengthen my core on my own. I feel that Joey has given me the tools to get my freedom back and I am so much happier from day to day knowing that I have control over my body again. This experience has been incredibly life changing and I strongly recommend Joey to anyone struggling with ongoing pain.

Written by Tracey Nakakura I was having problems with my right knee when I would do squats so my CrossFit coach suggested that I see Joey and get an assessment. In our first meeting Joey took me through a complete movement exam to see what aggravated my symptoms. Joey educated me in the importance of knowing why I had knee pain. He was able to triangulate the cause as a tight right femur and limited right ankle mobility. Joey did a variety of treatments that included Graston and Myofascial decompression using cupping and movement. The cupping was performed with movement, which was a new experience for me. The effectiveness of both of these applied together felt amazing! In our second session Joey gave me stretches to daily. This helped SO much, because I was able to self-assess how my body felt and continue to work out without creating bad habits. He also took a video of me squatting to show how my muscle memory was causing me to overcompensate to my left side to avoid the pain on my right side. He basically educated me on movement which was better than just treating it. I really appreciated the amount of 1 on 1 time I had with him because he was extremely diligent about his hands-on care, exercise instruction, and his ability to explain the nature of why I was feeling my pain. Its clear how much Joey loves his work and the dedication that he puts into becoming a better physical therapist for his clients. He is passionate about the field of physical therapy and understands the true value of providing high quality service. If you are someone that is really into fitness and weightlifting, you are in luck. Joey is your guy to go to when you want to recover or prevent an injury. Even if you want to move better in everyday life - picking up your kids, walking up and down the stairs or gardening on the weekend - Joey can help you.
