Well I have been hospitalizes about 9 times. I was sent there because of lack of insurance. I was told that I would be there about 5 days. I spent about 20 days there! First of all the doctors do not see you in tell 3 days after intake! This place shuts down on the weekends and holidays in which the hospital does not count as days. Wtf! Because there where 2 holidays in February that fell on the weekend i was there 6 days longer then need be! Most of us just sat in the common place listening to the radio that people would change at will and would just push the station buttons and leave. It drove me crazy! The staff had to take care of a special needs patient in which needed all the help they could muster up so we would just sit there waiting for groups" We where locked out of the bathrooms and at meals. My room mate would masturbate in the bedroom or in the bathroom in which he would spend a hour or so. Very creepy. I could not go into the room at will because he would be on the bed naked! The staff was over worked and did not want to be there! Some of the staff where out an out rude and seem to want to fight with the patients as one of the staff askerd a young guy to sign something and was told it was a "5 day" and when he asked what a 5 days was she grab the clip board and told him to ask his social worker.

When I was first sent to EMHC in 1985 older buildings were still being used and they were in pretty bad shape. Later, on a different occasion, I was placed in one of the new acute treatment centers and that was a bit better. Still, I didnt feel safe there, especially taking showers. I was put in there initially due to a court order. Later I was sent there because my insurance ran out when I was first in a private psych ward. They lock you out of your rooms during the day and you have to sit around and deal with the madness of the patients. They dont let you see your doctor very often and the counselors are there mostly to keep people in line. Its a bit like a human warehouse. If youre not crazy when you arrive youll tend to become that way to cope with the surroundings. When being admitted, I recommend that you sign papers that will hopefully have you released within five days. Unfortunately, if you are court ordered to be there things are not that simple. Generally, psych wards in private hospitals are not the best places to be, but at least theyre safe. Being in a state mental hospital is a different story and I suggest that you do your best to avoid being there.

I woke up one Saturday morning in August in this lovely place. I was strapped to a bed and everything was purple. The walls the floor and even the window frames. There was a nurse there by the name of Betty she told me I would be visited by Dr.George Zeller from the Peoria State Mental Hospital. When Dr.Z arrived he spoke with me and said I would be going to visit The Graveyard Elm."Fear, guilt and anger can be consuming emotions that might keep my spirit from moving on"/"Sometimes spirits remain because they need help with a problem or maybe to even settle a score".Still to this day I hear the sounds of young children playing Baseball.Purple is the color of my eyes.

The Ecker Center is a center that sincerely cares for the needs of its clients. So much that they are willing to extend their duties to help each individual receive the best care needed. I have heard nothing but EXCELLENT stories about this place and my interaction with them was at its finest. This is a place that sincerely want to see their clients improve.

I have been there several times; of the many mental-health hospitals that I have had the misfortune to be in, Elgin was the most humane. The staff is very caring and they endeavor to allow the patients some semblance of normal life.

Had to stay here for 13 days once to get the help that I needed. I felt like I was treated as more of an I mate rather than someone who went in voluntarily needing help...
