***Formerly Animal Care Highland Park, now known as the Animal Care Center of Topeka*** I currently am a student at KU and I was looking to get the kitten I had adopted from the Lawrence Humane Society declawed. I had previously taken Dia (my cat) to the Cat Clinic of Lawrence. They encouraged me to try other methods of keeping her from climbing, scratching, etc... before they would declaw her. $80 later on the soft nail caps, which were $20 every time they were put on and only lasted a max of 2.5 weeks, and I was informed that the Cat Clinic would still not be willing to declaw her at all. I had checked locally and the Lawrence vets were ridiculously expensive, offering "new" laser treatments and things that werent necessary. The costs I was quoted were about 2-4x the amount I would pay to have a cat declawed in the Wichita area (my family has always used the clinic in Mulvane)--$80 vs the cheapest I was quoted ~$215. Im not a cheapskate with my cat, she eats Blue Buffalo and is spoiled rotten, but I wasnt going to pay that much for a procedure I knew could be done for much less at another vet. Anyways, I took a gamble with ACCT and it was well worth it. Total cost for me was about $115--which includes the post-op pain meds-- plus gas and time. The drive from Lawrence was very short because the clinic isnt too far off of the turnpike/highway system (about 25 minutes tops). The staff are extremely friendly and helpful. After the surgery, Dia had 2 follow-up appointments--both of which were FREE (take note of that, because you only get one follow-up visit with most vets and they definitely dont act nearly as concerned about making sure that your cat has a full recovery). They even called a couple of times to confirm that Dia was doing well (more than the Humane Society did after I adopted her). Dr. Conner is awesome and very genuine. He actually took the time to speak with me about Dia and wasnt the kind of burnt-out veterinarian that has lost empathy for pets and pet owners after so many years of practice. I greatly appreciated all that they did and I plan on making the drive to Topeka for any of Dias future vet trips because I was that impressed.

Before last week I would have rated them as 5 stars. My parents moved to Topeka almost 2 years ago and hadnt found a local vet for their black lab, so I looked around the web and found A.C.C. for them. They took her for an initial appointment, and then a follow up a couple weeks later. Having lost my sister (their daughter) this last year, my parents seemed like they needed a change of scenery, plus, they hadnt taken a trip in over 25 years. So, my wife and I took a week vacation and took them on a week long road trip throughout the mid-west. My mom was hesitant to leave her dog with anyone, they had never spent a night away from her. Much less her be away from home. But mom liked the way A.C.C. seemed to treat her, and scheduled for her to be kenneled there for a week. She is a good dog, and doesnt seem to mind being in her cage style kennel...but my mom started having her doubts when they placed her in a kennel that she couldnt even stand up in, nor turn around in, nor her bed to fit into. So mom complained and they moved her to a run type of kennel. When we got back they said she had had an "accident" that morning and peed on her bed, which they had put in a garbage bag. I can tell you, she doesnt have accidents. She can go for over 8 hours without going outside. My mom didnt believe it, until they said that they only let them out 2 times a day. Well hell yea! You try holding it for 12+ hours and see how long you make it. The dog was so worried about making a mess on the floor that she peed her bed instead. She was willing to sleep in her pee, rather than disappoint them. When my mom got home and opened the bag, the smell was so pungent, she knew it had been several days in that bag. So that meant she had slept on the concrete floor for most of the week. My mom cried just thinking about it. And again when she was telling me about it. I doubt mom will ever leave her anywhere again, but if she does, it wont be here.

The vet techs and receptionists were all really nice and incredibly helpful. The vets themselves were very dodgy. I took in my dog because he had been throwing up all night. After some X-Rays it appeared that he had swallowed something he shouldnt have and they recommended an operation to remove it if it wouldnt pass on its own. The foreign body had already been in his system for a day when we brought him in - and they kept him for two more days - and it never passed - but they also didnt want to operate on him because "He just doesnt seem sick and is really happy." It was pulling teeth over those two days to get any vet to talk to me and answer questions. The techs did their best, but the vets are who know whats going on and should communicate with the pet owners. All I ever got to talk to after the initial intake was a tech - like the vets were simply too good for my time. A little advice - if youre going to charge a guy $500 to not fix his dogs problem - at least have the guts to come explain the bill. Its outrageous that you kept my dog for over 48 hours, did nothing but take x-rays confirming the problem, and then sending him home with me with a $500 bill and no solution. If anybody from Animal Care Center reads this - know that I plan on reporting you to the BBB of Kansas, and the the State Vet board. If the issue ends up requiring me to take him to another vet - then Ill see you in small claims court. If nobody stands up to bullies then they never stop.

Horrible place. NO inventory, No regurlar vet AND lies regarding owner being hurt. This clinic turns out that they are being investigated by the Veterinary Examiner regarding controlled substances etc AND both State and Federal IRS have active open investigations into tax evasion! New Manager has NO idea what she is doing, and help being received from local vet wives have turned out to raising prices, no inventory and the lack of ANY knowledgeable employees. ALL good employees Dr Conner had are gone and replaced with uneducated servants. DO NOT Used this office. The vets filling in may Also end up in trouble because of the illegal activates. LIES being told to Newspaper being lead by the wives of the fill in vets to drum up sympathy is sickening!! I pray the community figures it out before it is too late.

Dr. Conner is absolutely tops in my books Hes very compassionate and caring. When I had my daughters dog a long time ago, he got sick in middle of nite and I had no vet to care for him. I called Dr. Conner at 3:00a.m. and he got up to care for the pet even tough we were not established patients. Her doggie passed away next morning and I was heartbroken. Dr. Conners office sent flowers which I so very much appreciated. If a person wants the very best care for their pet from a compassionate vet, Dr. Conner is the best.
