We use the Cat Doctor for all three of our cats. Recently, one of our cats was diagnosed with infiltrative lipoma and required two extensive surgeries to give her the best chance for having a good rest of her life. Every single staff member was tremendously kind and patient with all of my questions. I had to make several return visits with my kitty for a few minor surgical complications and was charged very fairly (only for meds and not visits). The vets always had time to talk to me, always returned my phone calls, and the vet who performed the surgery, Dr. Wright, even took it upon himself to consult with Tufts when my cats pathology report came back and revealed the rare condition. I owe Dr. Wright an awful lot. He had a hunch the lump on my kittys side was not quite right, and he was correct. The vet techs were so wonderful with my kitty, who had to stay at the clinic for a total of four nights. They figured out her personality immediately and treated her with patience and kindness. When I came to visit my cat, they were always happy to chat about how she was progressing and always had immediate knowledge of her condition off the top of their heads...how she was eating, etc. They were professional to the nth degree. The receptionists were always tremendously kind to me and full of great information and tips. They were very comforting and patient both times I had to leave my kitty there for surgery. If they were harried or extremely busy, they didnt show it, and always made me and my kitty feel as if we were the most important beings in the world at that moment. I would recommend the Cat Doctor practice to anyone...in fact it was recommended to me by another pleased cat owner. These folks really love cats and it shows.

Very nice and skillful, just as long as the money lasted, after that we didnt matter. Like Doctor Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. In 2014 our 16 year old cat got sick, and they diagnosed him with kidney failure, and prescribed lifelong medication for him. He stayed there for treatment for a couple of weeks, and then we had to leave him there for about another month, to go out of state for awhile. Cost us several thousand dollars, but thankfully they saved his life. But it was a very different story when we called up for a refill a year later. They filled one for a years worth, and then two months later, when we called to finish the other two refills they refused, claiming they needed a "RELATIONSHIP" with the cat, and refused to fill the rest of the medication. We told them we had moved, and didnt see the need to drive 90 minutes and pay for another visit just for them to finish the refill when all it took was a phone call to the pharmacy. The receptionist was rude and hung up on me several times. So it seems that we were nothing but a paycheck to them. There were a couple of other times when we had a question for the vet, and she refused to even come to the phone, or call us back. So we filled a complaint with the licensing board, and are now awaiting a decision. And he died on 3/30/16, when he was just about 18 years old. And he didnt need to die. All he needed was his medication. Did you ever notice how some people talk about being humane, but it always just boils down to money??

WORST EXPERIENCE EVER-THIS VET IS AWFUL!! The Cat Doctor in Portland practices INCREDIBLY bad business. If this is your current vet, I would highly recommend transferring your animal to a different office. The administration is incredibly rude, making the paying customer feel stupid and embarrassed for asking questions about expensive procedures that were done without consent, after specifically asking for a simple phone call to approve. After leaving my visit upset, the vet called me and promised to refund a $95 Ultra Sound that was done without my consent. When I called back the following week to check on the status of the refund, I was told they would NOT be refunding my money, and that the vet was mistaken. I hope they are happy with the $95 they are refusing to refund me, because I will now make it my personal mission to drive as much business as possible away from them. What a joke. I GIVE THIS OFFICE 0 STARS. DO NOT use this vet clinic unless you like having money stolen from you and being completely taken advantage of. I am beyond disappointed. I could not agree MORE with the below review about how extremely RUDE and CONDESCENDING the staff was.

I have been using the Cat Doctor since I moved to Maine in 1983. Dr.Givins is wonderful. I had moved away and when I came back I got my cat Tigger, who almost died and the treatment that he received at the Cat Doctor was so amazing. I could come visit with him while he was having to stay as he was so sick. The attention he received form the staff was so caring. So it was only fitting that when Tiggers Kidney Disease brought him to the point where his life was no longer sustainable and I had to make that hard choice, that it was at the Cat Doctors that I took him to, to leave this world peacefully. Again Dr. Givins spent some quality time with me in their nice little sitting area away form the lobby and helped me come to grips with this hard choice. Tigger has now gone ahead to wait for me in the after world and I am so grateful that I was, thanks to the Cat Doctor, able to let him go peacefully. I would trust all my cats to the Cat Doctor. Thank you Dr. Givins and your staff. Love, Jacqui Deveneau

I came to the Cat Doctor in December 2005 because my cat had been diagnosed with lung cancer. I wanted a second opinion. The staff were EXTREMELY RUDE and condescending. I dont have enough negative words to describe them other than just plain cruel. When I asked that my cat have a private cremation, they did not call me until over 8 weeks later. The woman on the phone was so mean and condescending. They made a mistake and I would not be getting my cats remains. THE WOMEN WAS ANGRY, RUDE AND CONDESCENDING WHEN SHE TOLD ME THIS, IT WAS THEIR MISTAKE AND THEY NEVER APOLOGIZED!!! I will never go there again and I warn others not to go there! I HAVE NEVER BEEN TREATED SO BADLY IN MY LIFE!!!!!! VERY UNPROFESSIONAL CRUEL AND NASTY!

I love the Cat Doctor. My cat had a chronic illness and I tried many vets over the years, most of whom would not even read her charts before i brought her in despite me telling the receptionist that she had a chronic illness. The doctors at the Cat Doctor immediately put her on a new medication that nearly eliminated her symptoms and she lived several years happy and comfortable. When i did need to put her to sleep they were gentle and kind and let me hold her in a sunny, quiet room while she died. I still have the sympathy card that they sent after her death. I love these folks- im just sad i had to move too far away to continue having them as my caregivers.
