Shady Oak Veterinary Clinic is a veterinary service provider located in Minnetonka, Minnesota. The clinic offers a range of services for pets, including routine check-ups, emergency care, surgeries, and more. While the clinic has garnered a rating of 4.5, the reviews present a mixed picture.
One reviewer praised the clinic for its compassionate and effective care, particularly mentioning Dr. Barb. The reviewer has been a long-time client and has had multiple cats treated for various conditions, ranging from routine examinations to serious injuries and diseases. The staff was described as compassionate and technically excellent.
Another reviewer mentioned the clinic's support for holistic treatment options and raw food diets. The clinic was lauded for its fair and reasonable pricing. The vet tech, Tyler, was particularly praised for making pets feel comfortable during their visits.
One reviewer had a negative experience with a surgery performed at the clinic. The stitching was described as terrible, leading to complications that required the pet to undergo another surgery at a different clinic. The reviewer warned against opting for surgeries at Shady Oak.
Another reviewer criticized the clinic for misdiagnosing their pet's condition. Despite spending $400 on tests, the vet's advice was either to put the pet in intensive care at a high cost or to euthanize it. The pet eventually recovered on its own, leading the reviewer to switch to a different vet.
Issues with overbooking and long wait times were also mentioned. One reviewer, who has a mobility impairment, found it difficult to stand in line and was not pleased with the service.
While some reviewers found the staff to be professional and courteous, others had different experiences. The facility was described as clean and modern by one reviewer, but the same could not be said by everyone.
The reviews for Shady Oak Veterinary Clinic offer a mixed bag of experiences. While some praise the compassionate care and reasonable pricing, others warn against poor surgical procedures and misdiagnoses. It's clear that while the clinic has its strengths, there are areas that require improvement.

Dr. Barb has been my vet for over 20 years. I and my cats followed her from Blue Cross Vet to Shady Oak vet. Ive recommended Dr. Barb to all my friends, my friends parents, and my barber. All of them are extremely pleased with her care. For my cats, Dr Barb has done routine examinations and shots, emergency care, neutering, spading, treated simple and serious injuries, urinary problems, diabetes, hyperthyroidism, hyperthermia, cyst removal, heart disease and old age. All told, she has cared for about a dozen cats, some from birth to death. She even advised my daughter about her kitten, over the phone, in Nicaragua. Her advice is compassionate, down-to-earth, and extremely effective. When recommending care she offers multiple options, describing precisely what things will cost, and how likely they are to be effective. And most unusual, she is not afraid to say when it is time to give up and put the animal to sleep. She knows how much pet owners care about their pets, and cares for the owners, as well as the pets. The care itself is first class. Her staff is compassionate and technically excellent. Surgery is competent, and in my experience, free of complications. Medications have been effective. My cats have all done very well at Shady Oak. I am extremely grateful to Dr Barb for the absolutely exceptional care she has given to my animals and the thoughtfulness she has shown to my family.

We loved this vet clinic at first- great prices, friendly staff, convenient location. But after a recent surgery, we will definitely never be going back. Our 3 year old lab had a tumor that needed to be removed. Unfortunately, the vet did a terrible job of stitching! The skin was unevenly stitched together and there were far too few stitches for the size of the incision. A few days later, the wound started leaking, but the vet told us not to worry about it. Eventually, one of the stitches blew, and we ended up taking him to 3 different vets to find the first available vet to re-do the surgery. Each of the vets told us the stitching was terrible and the stitches would not have blown if there were the correct number and it had been a better job. Shady Oak claimed no responsibility and would not even consider a refund. We had given them the benefit of the doubt when we had to go in repeatedly for UTIs with our other puppy, even though we figured out on our own after repeated rounds of antibiotics that the UTIs were caused by a food allergy. Again, we had given them the benefit of the doubt when they told us that due claws did not need to be removed and when one ripped and they cut the claw and quick way back without any anesthetic. But the surgery was the last straw. Please dont let this happen to your pet! They might be ok for check-ups and routine visits, but do not go here for anything else.

We have been taking our dog to Shady Oak for many years, but after this last experience we had there, we will never go back! Our dog came down with diarrhea and vomiting, was not eating or drinking anything. I took him in and after meeting with the only vet available to see him in this emergency situation and $400 worth of tests later, she wanted to sell me meds to give him, but he is diabetic and wasnt eating, so I passed on the meds. Later, after the test results came back, she called to tell us that our only 2 options were to put him in intensive care at $2000 a night or put him down because he wouldnt survive the week, that was about 3 weeks ago. We chose neither option and waited it out. By Sunday evening, he was eating and drinking and was back to normal. After consulting with a different vet (who is now our new vet), we were told that he just had a stomach bug and due to that, his levels were sending his diabetes into overdrive. He kept shaking his head and thanking us for not doing what the Shady Oak vet suggested. How can some of these vets "visit" with pets and their families for 5 minutes and make a call like that? I wish I could say that is the only bad experience (although, this is the worst) weve had at this clinic, but its not. No, we will no longer take our pets to Shady Oak

I agree wholeheartedly with the person who complained about the wait and not being greeted right away. I have a mobility impairment, so I cant just stand in line; it hurts my feet too much. The prices are good, but they overbook. To get an emergency dental was a 2 1/2 week wait. By the time it came around, my cat had lost more than a pound. Rather than halt the surgery to investigate why he had lost so much weight in such a short time, they went ahead with the surgery. I asked about that and was told that they dont a second physical when theres already been a pre-op physical. Apparently, they dont even do it when theres a significant weight loss. It turned out my cat had aggressive intestinal cancer. So, he went through the stress and pain of the surgery, only to die a few weeks later, and I was left paying for the dental surgery bill and antibiotics. Its a little more expensive, but Ive gone back to Oak Knoll. I should have never left there in search for bargain prices. You get what you pay for.

I will never switch vets again! Me and my pets have been clients of theirs for over a year and they are hands down the best clinic Ive ever used, we will not leave. Dr. Barb is amazing - not only does she support my choice to feed raw and receive limited vaccinations, but they also offer holistic options. Also, Tyler, who is a vet tech there, is the most amazing, dog loving, happy, positive vet tech Ive ever encountered! His philosophy is to make dogs think the vet is a great place, and hes done it!! My dog adores Tyler. I never feel rushed, Dr. Barb is enormously thorough in her treatment and information, I super appreciate that the vets themselves do the administering of injections, etc. right in the room with me so I know my furbabies feel comforted with me being with them. And, last, but not least, their prices are more than fair and reasonable. I cant say one negative thing about this clinic.

Had my dog spayed here a couple days ago. They also had to extract three teeth and dispense a deworming med. The cost was much lower than our regular vet which had quoted us $450-$500 just to have our dog spayed (we did not know about the problem with her teeth or worms at the time -ouch, that probably would have brought the cost way up) but it ended up costing much less at Shady Oak- just under $300! Unbelivable! The people at the clinic were very professional and courteous, especially the gentleman I spoke to on the phone (although I never got his name) who explained to me why they had to pull the teeth and how she had ended up getting the worm. Also its a very clean and modern looking facility, despite the non-descript outside. It doesnt have that weird medicinal smell either. Overall very happy with the service! Will definitely recommend Shady Oak to friends and family.
