It has been four months since my PRK surgery. PRK is different from LASIK in that they will laser directly onto the cornea, and the recovery time and "discomfort" will last longer. I was a candidate for PRK because I have thin cornea. Although I want to give a good review to this medical facility, my experience was incredibly disappointing. As I said, I was only a candidate for PRK (which is fine), but because I had several important things to do within the next few months, I almost chose not to get the surgery. Upon realizing this, Dr. Mike reassured me that I would be able to see by the weekend. This is no exaggeration. I believed him, and I got the surgery. On my surgery day, I was brought into an eye check room where a female employee told me to sign a yellow paper. Clearly expecting me to sign in a heartbeat without reading the details, she hovered over me. Given that I was expected to sign the paper quickly without wasting time, I asked her what it entailed, but she flat out ignored me (while still standing there staring at me). I tried to quickly skim the document, but couldnt grasp what it was about, so I asked again. Again, she just stood there in front of me. While in the operating room, the assistant preparing me for the surgery had me lie down on the chair and look into the laser machine. The first second my eyes went under, I was staring into a bright light, so a small grunt came out of my mouth (nothing big - just a natural reaction when a light is flashed into your eyes unexpectedly). The assistant suddenly began to barrage me with comments, such as, "No whining, no complaining, he [Dr. Dello Russo] doesnt like that." Needless to say, I did not respond, as her barrage came out of nowhere. Although I may look young, I am an adult, and I did not expect the employee to scold me and add any extra tense stress to the experience. My personal hope is that I never encounter such unprofessional behavior at this facility again. After I got my procedure done, I experienced the most excruciating pain I have ever felt in my entire life and the pain killers did not work. On the phone, Dr. Mike kept saying it was "normal." Later, he said I was a "rare exception," and even he was learning from this new experience. I understand that there are always odd anomalies and I happened to be one of them. However, doctors should never use code words such as "mild discomfort" without EVER acknowledging the possibility of a negative physical reaction. Never once was I warned during my consultation. It has been four months since my surgery and my eyes are not 100%. When I am the least bit tired, my vision blurs in and out. I am very diligent about taking care of my eyes and administering drops when needed. I understand that everyones bodies heal differently, but if I had not been guaranteed that my less-than-perfect vision would still be interfering with my work by now, I would have not received the surgery. I write this post not to hate on Dello Russo Laser Vision but to honestly relay my experience in full accurate detail so that such an experience will never occur again. From my knowledge, Dr. Dello Russo has been in the industry for quite a long time, so out of respect, I expected much more from the medical facility than the poor service I received.

While the assistant was checking my vision and asking me health-related questions she asked me to stop reading the pamphlet and packet the secretary gave to me. I was politely answering her questions while reading the packets so I did not understand why she asked me to stop. Like am I not allowed to educate myself AT the free consultation? She also did not understand the terms "sophomore" or "second year of college" when she asked me what grade Im in, which proves her English is poor. Not only does this annoy me, but it also bothers me that a non-decent English-speaker works at a well-known office, this only degrades its practice. Also, whereas other offices provide different price packages for the procedure, this place only offered me one price. Tatyana told me that the price for a normal procedure is $7000, but that she would give me a student discount and I would get the procedure done for $5000. This is, of course, very nice of them, but a variety of choices would have been better. Especially, also because my parents will be the ones paying for this and a lower price would be better, but she did not budge for below $5000. This place has also been sued over 1000 times, so how am I supposed to know whether I should believe them? She also didnt mention the price until I did. Is price not the most important factor to both the business and the customer? Additionally, I do not like the fact that LASIK requires TWO machines and that a patient has to be moved from one machine to the other during the procedure. I did a lot of research and there is another laser vision correction procedure called LASEK (or what Dr. Jeff Dello Russo calls PRK) only has one laser machine and does not cut a corneal flap. He also claimed that LASIK is better for my high prescription than LASEK, which is a lie, because a higher prescription requires him to cut deeper cut into my cornea. But since LASEK does not cut a flap, LASEK would be better for me. He essentially lied to me, just to get me to go through the procedure and put the money in his pocket. I would not recommend this place because of the unqualified staff and lying doctors.

I was very excited to attend the free consultation with Dr. Dello Russo, as I heard many great things about his practice. The appointment was scheduled for February 1, 2014. The receptionist was welcoming and asked me to fill out some paper work. I waited for quite some time in the lobby. After waiting for about 30-45mins I was called to have some test taken. The test were done very quickly and then I was asked to wait in the examination room. The wait time here was horrible! I waited for over 40 mins to see Dr. Dello Russo. After determining that I was a right candidate for LASIK, someone else proceeded to explain the cost, Mr. Edward Shulman. Mr. Shulman was helpful in explaining the cost of the procedure ad also offering Care Credit as a method of payment. He went as far as checking my available balance. However, when it was determined that there was not enough credit available on my care credit card he offered to increase the balance. While this sounded great, the wait time was horrible. I was in the same examination room for another additional 45-60 mins. I just about had enough put my jacket on and walked to the desk. Mr. Shulman then asked me to keep waiting as Care Credit needed to speak to me directly. After finally speaking to Care Credit I wanted to make the appointment later on in the week. Mr. Shulman insisted that I make the appointment now…I explained that the month of February was a busy one and that I could not commit to a date until I looked at my calendar. He then handed over his business card and said I could call any time to schedule the appointment. I was determined on leaving without making the appointment but he kept insisting. He then said “come into the room” he closed the door behind us (my boyfriend and I) and said “You need to make an appointment!” Mr. Shulman is the reason why I will not get LASIK done there! The office needs to know how this man is so pushy and unprofessional he is. I will never recommend this place to any friends or family. Horrible experience! Do not waste your time as this place only sees you as $$$ and not as a human being concerned with their vision needs.
