this all started about a year ago when i had to bring my one dog for a dental cleaning. i had spoken with the manager at the time and she was great, was able to break everything down for me so i felt confident and comfortable to put my in their care. everything was successful with the cleaning. so i decided to bring my other dog in for a cleaning so standard procedure i had to bring her to get her blood work done to make sure everything was okay. i should have thought something when i brought her in and dr.patel tried to talk to me about fixing her back leg (which did not bother her), she was 9 and never experienced any problems. i told him off the bat what i was there for, that just put a bad taste in my mouth with dr.patel. needless to say after that i was only going to meet with dr.shukala from then on. the cleaning did go well. about 10months later my girl was not feeling well. i brought her in to dr.shukala and he stated nothing was wrong, she seemed ok. i brought her back 2days later as she was throwing up non-stop. i brought her in and she had to see dr.patel. i had both an x-ray and bloodwork done (results not until the next day). the x-ray showed a foreign object and he stated that it looks like a kidney stone and explained to me that if she does need surgery she would be referred elsewhere but the bloodwork would give a better idea as to what was going on. during that visit it turned out dr.shukala stopped in and looked at the x-ray and looked at it with amusement. needless to say the next day i spoke with dr.patel and he said she had a severe kidney problem and that i needed to bring her in to re-hydrate her for a couple of days and then bring her to another vet. i told him i was bringing her right in. i was a couple blocks away and recieve a call from dr.patel asking me what was i doing. i let him know i was up the block. when i walk in it was weird and unclear as to what was really going on. it was like he was getting things ready for me to take her elsewhere. at that point i didnt even want her in their care and took her to garden state. when i got there i was informed that she had chronic kidney disease. i was in disbelief as how this could happen as she was there less than a year ago for blood work. the vet was nice enough to requested that information and seen that her kidney levels were high. why dr.patel didnt inform me, i have no idea? i am still angry about that. it seemed to be more important to try to sell me on another procedure that was not needed. i had to make one of the hardest decisions of my life and put my little princess down. now my trust in vets is non-existent. to also add to my pain. i called them to let them know what had happened and asked specifically to stop recieving the post cards for her and it is now almost 3months later and still recieving them. needless to say they never even contacted me to send condolences or to find out the status. please, anyone who loves their animals, do not go there.

Very poor flea treatment for our 6-year-old Shih-Tzu: - sold us bad anti-flea medication ("Revolution") prior to flea infection - we had to direct them on where to find the fleas later - flea collar ineffectual (thrown out promptly by subsequent vet; infectious rash developed) Compared to Theresa Wongs amazingly sad and disturbing experience below (she brought her dog in for a tooth cleaning, the dog later died!), our familys story is relatively tame. Weve been taking our Shih-Tzu to Rahway Animal Hospital for roughly a year. At first we were pleased with their service; the doctors seemed amiable, professional, and the prices were affordable. The doctors there insisted we use "Revolution" as an anti-flea medication, saying it was the best of that market. After using this product for roughly a year we discovered that our Shih-Tzu had picked up a nasty flea infection. Upon returning to the vet they examined her and claimed nothing was wrong - that is, until we had to point out to them that she had fleas. They reassured us everything would be fine, sold us flea bombs for the house, and gave our Shih-Tzu a flea collar. Only the flea bombs would work. When our dog didnt show signs of improvement we took her to another vet, in Linden, about a week or so later. The Linden vet promptly removed the flea collar and threw it away, pointing out to us that it was ineffectual. Our dogs skin had broken out into an allergic hot-spot beneath where the collar was once placed. Fleas still crawled on her skin. We were furious. The Linden vet prescribed the proper medication and treatment. Now, roughly a month or so after our last visit to Rahway Animal Hospital, our Shih-Tzu seems to be doing fine. The rash is gone. Theres some scratching but we cant find fleas anywhere.

I brought my Italian Greyhound to Dr. Shukla for a routine teeth cleaning, only to receive a call that my beloved dog was dead. When my husband and I arrived there (I was 3 months pregnant at the time), we were shown our dog hooked up to a bunch of wires and tubes on the operating table. When we asked what had happened, we were told he had been brought to the recuperating room, where he had woken up, and then died. This was the first coverup of what happened. He wouldnt have been hooked up to anything had he died in the recuperating room. When I asked for a bloodtest to see why he had died, I was given him in a cardboard box and told to go to the Garden State Veterinarians in Tinton Falls and they could do it there. It struck me as odd that the vet couldnt do it, but we were in shock, so we went. We saw a very nice vet in Tinton Falls who told us that unfortunately, his bloodwork would have had to be done at the Rahway Vets, and that his blood was no longer viable since he had been dead for a few hours. When I confronted Dr Shukla, he never once said Im sorry for your loss, never even seemed to care. He still billed us for the dental work done- since it was completed before my 7 year old dog died. My parents used this vet for years, so once I had a dog, I went there too- I never in my life imagined that I would lose my pups this way. I would NOT recommend this vet to anyone, EVER. Too much negligence happened that day.

I visited Dr. Shukla all the way from Brooklyn for a 2nd opinion about some urinary tract issues my dog was having. What I appreciated most about the experience was the doctors candor and transparency in regards to what my pet was in for -- risk factors, possible outcomes, costs, etc. This was refreshing and in stark contrast to my visit to a more local vet who quoted me close to $1500 more for the same procedure (sans x-rays, urinalysis) and failed to properly explain the associated risks. I ended up having Dr. Shukla perform the surgery my dog needed. I received multiple phone calls throughout the process updating me on the progress of the surgery, in keeping with the clinics very transparent practices. This was a relief because Im generally not a fan of how opaque this entire system is. I should also note that the staff up front was warm and accommodating. The whole place had a very we-love-animals vibe, one that felt genuine. My pup is now recovering from her surgery, and Im very happy with my whole Rahway Animal Hospital experience. He started out as a second opinion, and became my primary vet -- hour-long drive be damned.
