1/4/17 update: WE are still heartbroken over losing Sampson... THANKS FOR NOTHING -- WHY couldnt you have done an X-ray?! Oh, yeah... he did not have the money on his person-- only to find out 2 days later that he had an internal injury and only after my son was forced to sign over his best friend before you would do anything... and THEN IT WAS TOO LATE! YOU GUYS SUCK BIG TIME! HOW ABOUT THE WAY BUSINESS IS DONE HERE... YOU MAY ASK? Well, all you have to do is take a look at their building they are in, and are building another "top of the line" clinic on the same property... YEAH, it is ALL ABOUT THE $$$ @ Animal Emergency & Pet Care Clinic of the High Country! Sampson was a Great dog and did not deserve what happened to him at this place!-->My Son, Derek, rushed his best friend, Sampson, a beautiful, 2 year old, long haired German Shepherd to the Animal Emergency and Pet Care Clinic of the High Country, after he was struck by a car on the 18, of Dec.. My son, who is expecting his first child works very hard and didnt have much money at the time so, they told my son to sign away his rights to his best friend before they would do the surgery needed-- it was a hind lower leg injury, a degloving of the skin, with a couple of cuts and torn ligaments... could have been treated at the time... he couldnt do it. So, the vet bandaged his leg for $70 and sent them on their way. They were told to come back every two days to redress the bandages. When they went back, they were told that the bandage was wrapped too tight, so they wrapped it again, for another $70. A couple of days passed and Sampson took a turn for the worse. My son rushed him back to the vet and did what they asked, under extreme duress, signed away his best friend, to save his life. He has been crying for days. Hurt, I went there today hoping, begging to work out a payment plan, along with a down payment. I was told no one was there that could make any decisions, much less talk with me, nor give me any information. I cried out loud in the waiting area, and all of a sudden, the doctor was in. They took me to a back room where I did speak with one of the vets. I explained how I live with an in-operable brain tumor with no assurances of being here this time next year. I asked that they please not take his best friend away, too. She then told me that Sampson "crashed" on the table and how they did everything they could, adding that they did this at their expense. I now know that what matters the most to the Animal Emergency and Pet Care Clinic of the High Country... IS THE $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$! If they would have put people and animal first... he would still be here. They wanted it all up front, period. And now my sons best friend is gone. This wasnt right! I know they do a lot for most people. It was a hind, lower leg injury! He SHOULD still be here! They wanted it all up front, period. And now my sons best friend is gone. Derek is at work right now, praying for a miracle... I dont know how to tell him. Merry Christmas. Gary Towne

They only care about money and is shown especially with a $95 up charge for just going to their offices. I brought my kitten to their offices due to blood in her stool. The first doctor, gave her a shot for parasites and told me to take out any dairy in her food. (Which I did.) Older male dr praised me and told me how well I was taking care of my kitten and said she was healthy but a little under weight. ... I waited probably a day and a half to see if she would get better. She wasnt, she had started defecating more with blood so I took her back. The receptionist began to question me why I didnt use their 24hour check back for free policy. Confused because I wasnt aware of this policy due to not being told about it, I ignored and continued my visit. They took my kitten back to take her viles, she was acting fine, just worried about her stool. They send me into an exam room and bring my kitten in on a heated water pouch and gave her some yellow medicine (they didnt tell me what it was) and then told me she was going to be okay and told me to purchase some protein treats to give my kitten some energy. After spending about $300 on this visit I went home. I had started cooking later that day and about two hours after my visit my kitten was fully limp and drooling out of her mouth. I immediately took her back to their offices. They send me into a room, take my kitten to a back room (SHE WAS STILL BREATHING!!!) and then next thing I know they bring in a piece of clay with her paw print and name declaring her deceased. Wtf???? How does that even happen or sound right???? I also tried to return the UNOPENED products they sold me two hours before and they declined because it was already rung up in their system but said they would gladly take it back as a donation. Wtf again! For one, why was I not given the protein treats during my first visit to help her? I dont know this office is shady in my opinion. They do not care about the animals, only money you will easily spend $200+ each visit and may not even get your pet or an explanation back. I refuse to go back.

Back when this clinic was in the dumpy building next to Night Secrets, I could call if I had a canine issue and they were good about telling me what to do on my own to help the dog or if it really needed to be brought in. For this reason, Ive felt loyal to this clinic and defended them despite getting Fd, over and over. Some of the most memorable screwings were for dental visits. They estimated ~$300 for my 5 year old dogs teeth cleaning and possible extraction. It was "dental month", which meant the visit would be discounted 20%, so I was totally shocked to pick up my fairly young dog and a $1066.00 bill. I should have learned from this visit, but I did not. I brought my 3 year old dog in for her dental after my bank account recovered some (again, on a "dental month"), and knew to ask the price estimate once the surgery was in progress and they knew how many extractions they were going to do. This time, they said they were pulling 11 teeth and it would cost about $450. When I picked the dog up, the bill was over $800 with absolutely no explanation for the price discrepancy. Flash forward a few years and hundreds of dollars spent for someone to tell me my dog has allergies or an "upset tummy".. I brought each dog in over the last 6 months and they had exams by the doctor and BOTH times I made sure to ask, "My dogs will be boarded in July, will this count as their annual exam so that they can come back and get the vaccines necessary for boarding in NC without a whole extra exam fee?" Each time, the answer was that YES, this would count as the annual exam and the dogs could come back for a tech visit and get the vaccines. I called to schedule their vaccines today and was told that actually they would each need a whole new annual exam even thought theyve both been seen within the last few months. Get your stories straight before you talk to your clients! No wonder the doctor turnover is so high there. I will say that Austin, as well as the woman with shortish hair who works at the front desk are always super polite and easy to talk to.
