Transphobia and unsound, presumptuous medical advice. Dr. Sawyer seemed to be very uncomfortable and confused about having a trans client. He asked me about my testosterone prescription and I told him that it was hormone replacement therapy and that it was plain testosterone. As he was examining my gums he told me I was bleeding a lot and asked me when I was going to stop taking hormone therapy. I was rather appalled and told him it was up to me when to stop. He told me that the testosterone was contributing to my gingivitis. I asked if men are at greater risk and he said he didnt know. He essentially encouraged me to stop taking hormones without having any medical reason to do so. So one thing, you cannot as a dentist advise a trans patient to stop transitioning. You know nothing about them. For another thing, I did a quick google search and *women* are more at risk to gingivitis, "More female hormones (estrogen and progesterone) cause more blood to flow to your gums, which causes them to become more sensitive and "overreact" to anything that may irritate them". A search for hormones and gingivitis seems to pull up articles exclusively about estrogen contributing to it. Im at less of a risk of gum bleeding when Im taking testosterone versus if I had a predominantly estrogen-based chemistry. I also had a hysterectomy 3 weeks ago, which I had told him. My body doesnt produce its own sex hormones anymore so I will either be on some form of supplemental hormone or no hormones. If I do not replace testosterone with estrogen Im at a risk of developing osteoporosis. Brittle weak bones doesnt seem good for dental health, Dr. Sawyer. Dont make weird assumptions about hormones, medication, or the health of trans people just because we scare you. You are a doctor and this is irresponsible and bigoted.

Dr. Sawyer recently completed a two-year full mouth rehabilitation for me. This included seven (7) quadrant surgeries replacing bone loss, an extraction, a root canal, and four implants. Along the way this caring dentist took the time to explain to me why my mouth had been in peril--I had ignored my own needs while my wife went through cancer treatment, which resulted in serious periodontal-caused bone loss. He further explained to me that starches from foods combined with water are like paste made of flour and water, and that the resulting plaque continues to harden over time, inviting an anaerobic bacteria to feast on the bone that supports my teeth. This knowledge gave me perspective and an increased motivation towards performing my part in dental care, more so than any other dentist Id previously encountered. Certainly I had to change my focus on personal care going forward, and some of the news presented to me was not what I wanted to hear, but I felt more educated than chastised in the process. I was also impressed with the holistic view Dr. Sawyer held. I had a serious orthopedic foot surgery to recover from during the rehab; my treatment was put on hold while my immune system dealt with healing the foot surgery. As the cost of this restoration was substantial, I look back with the opinion that I am pleased with the results, the discomfort was worth it, and I didnt waste a dime towards patronizing a dentist-turned-friend who surrounds his patients with a friendly staff. Thus the well-earned five-star rating.

Went in for a routine cleaning and check up. First impression was positive--friendly staff, cozy and attractive office. Didnt care for the x-ray process as it was the most painful Ive experienced. The cleaning itself seemed abbreviated, not as thorough as Ive experienced elsewhere, but adequate. Dr. Sawyer found cavities, including one under a crown which had to be removed. He did an excellent job with that--the new crown fits much better than the old one and he took the time to make sure it fit well so I could floss around it. He also showed genuine care with a free follow up visit and a couple of phone calls to make sure I was doing ok. Id recommend Dr. Sawyer.

Ive been working with Dr Sawyer for over two years and throughout the entire process Dr Sawyer and his staff have been amazing. My situation involved a full implant where multiple surgeries occurred and follow up visits. During this process it became very clear to me that Dr Sawyer cares very much for each patient he sees. If youre considering a new dentist I would highly recommend you give Dr Sawyer a opportunity to become your dentist. His integrity and professionalism are above any Ive ever experienced. I couldnt have asked for a better experience. I am so happy with my new smile and will continue to have all of my dental work done at this office.

Have been getting my dental check up and examination done here in the past couple of years, all the staff and people working over there very friendly and welcoming. Today needed a treatment to take care of a bad tooth, Dr.Sawyer was very comprehensive in assessment and giving me different possible options for that tooth. also had a very pleasant experience during treatment with no pain throughout procedure and thorough review for after procedure home care. Happy that I have my dental needs taken care of at his office. Very professional dentist and staff , will definitely recommend him to friends and family in future!

I am probably Dr. Sawyers longest-term patient. In September of this year it will be 20 years that I received my first dental treatment. What hasnt changed in those 20 years it Dr. Sawyers attention to detail and determination to reach the optimal solution for every dental problem. On one occasion, he spent several hours finding and clearing out a calcified and infected root canal beneath a crown. When I started out with Dr. Sawyer he practiced on the East Coast. I still live on the East Coast but due to frequent Business trips to the West Coast, Dr. Sawyer remains my dentist till this day.

I have been going to Dr. Sawyer for almost 3 years now. Joe is very compassionate about my recovery from drugs and alcohol. My 10+ years of drug abuse has left my teeth and gums in banged up shape, and the complications are not ideal. Joe and his staff are very caring and want to make sure their patients are comfortable, before, during, and after an office visit. So far I have needed a crown, root canal, and a broken tooth filled. Dr. Sawyers office always address the concerns I have and offer great encouragement to floss and brush regularly.

Dr. Joe is up-to-date with the latest in dental care and technology and I greatly appreciate his calm thoughtful manner. The staff is friendly, professional and timely with following up on insurance and billing issues. The office is very comfortable, always clean and nicely decorated - I like the paintings!
