Weve seen a lot of different vets in our Boxer dogs 7 years... vet students at Cornells teaching hospital, vets at a pricey Westchester county clinic, an inexpensive country vet on the outskirts of Dallas, and a few different vets in Portland. Weve been happy with each of them, but Dr. Hamann is by far the best weve seen. Our dog struggled with food and skin allergies for over 5 years, and no vet was ever able to offer a real solution, just periodic steroid shots to treat the symptoms. A friend suggested Hawthorne Vet, and we decided to give it a try despite the cost and my extreme skepticism about alternative medicine. So glad we did... theres nothing hippy-dippy about the place, its a normal vet office with very knowledgeable staff, and sure enough, Dr. Hamann was able to figure out what was causing all the itching and discomfort, and give us a real solution (Chinese herbs sprinkled on her food every day). Weve never seen our dog so comfortable and itch-free without steroids. So grateful to be able to see a vet who can incorporate both conventional western medicine AND eastern alternatives!

August 29th I took my cat to see the veterinarian. She was urinating blood. Dr Hammond has looked after her for 3 years and she has been great. I never had a problem with the doctors or any of the staff. Calico has been treated before for this same issue, but the receptionist stated that the doctor would not see my cat. They werent busy. There was no one in the waiting room. I said that I would wait. The receptionist refused to even get up and go ask Dr. Judkins. She said, "I can guarantee that he will not see you without an appointment. The receptionist had me make an appointment for the next day. I took my cat to another vet, one that would see animals on an emergency basis, received the appropriate antibiotic and forgot about the appointment I made with Dr Judkins for the next day. They billed me thirty dollars for that missed appointment. I will pay it because I dont like conflict, but I will never go back and will tell everyone I know this story. That receptionist should be ashamed of herself.

Hawthorne Veterinary Clinic has been my primary veterinary clinic for 14 years. My first furry companion received excellent care from Dr. Hamann throughout his declining years. Her knowledge, treatment and care allowed him to have less pain during his last years without dosing him with pharmaceuticals. She has been the primary care with Obie. Hes had a few surgeries ie. neutering and teeth cleaning and has always recovered quickly. His yearly check ups are thorough. Most recently Dr. Wagner treated Obie when he needed to see a veterinarian as soon as possible. Her care, treatment and knowledge is also top notch. Ive read a few reviews here. Let me address the cost first: The cost is comparable to other clinics. The front office staff many years ago was less than great. The new receptionist is friendly, easy to work with and doesnt ignore you.

As of Aug. 30, 2010 they now charge $150 just to walk through their door for the first time. I recently moved to Portland, and my 14-year-old cat needs her annual shots. I expect to pay for the shots and routine exam. I dont expect to lay out $150 just for walking through the door. The receptionist double-checked with the vet and told me "he has to charge $150 for the first visit." The vet doesnt even have the guts to admit he chooses to charge this fee, instead blaming it on some apparently mysterious force. Not only will I not go to him, but I have contacted a friend from whom I solicited a referral through an animal rights organization (ALDF) and advised him what a rip-off this is. Apparently the Hawthorne Veterinary Clinic hasnt heard theres a recession on. Or maybe they only want a certain type of clientele.

I brought my cat Pumpkin with nerve damage into the Clinic. She had been seen by another vet for 2 years now and the last couple of months was going down hill. I was nervous about going in to this new vet. I was scheduled with Jeffrey Judkins. He looked over Pumpkins chart notes from the previous vet. He talked to me about Pumpkin. This Doctor is very carrying and knows what he is talking about. He did acupuncture for my cat. This was the best Pumpkin has been in awhile. Recommended what I should be feeding and doing with my cat to help her. I am so happy Kristina at Beastie Boutique (pet food store) in Vancouver highly recommended them. The staff here is great. Everyone is busy and everyone seemed very pleasant. I would recommend this Veterinary Clinic to everyone.

Dr J and his staff go beyond the scope of what one expects from a vet and a clinic. Max, my bulldog, was under Dr. Js care for 11 years. We brought Max to Dr J when he was 6 months old and diagnosed with premature arthritis. Dr J added overweight to the diagnosis and got him off the rimadyl and suggested a species specific diet that served Max well. Through most of his life we only saw Dr. J annually for wellness care. When illnesses arose they were short lived. When Max was diagnosed with cancer, Dr J helped us navigate all of the options and coached us through the western medicine surgeries at Oregon State Univ., and provided after care. He and his staff made a traumatic situation bearable. No doubt, whatsoever, our next dog will have Dr J as his primary care provider!!

I came in to purchase something and stood staring at the reception in the back room(10 ft away) as she typed something. She failed to acknowledge that I was waiting. When I asked to pay she said she would help me when she was done typing? I have considered bringing my cats here. But I can never get passed the snotty front desk. It is a great idea for natural pet care but you have to pay a "consult" fee just to introduce your pet. Something around $150.00. Their customer service is the classic Portland customer service model of which is based on being rude and pretentious. Customer service means that you value customers and your main purpose is to be friendly! No customers, no job!

I have a dog that has been living with cancer for 2.5 years. Three separate people had asked me if I was taking him to Hawthorne (I wasnt) so last summer, when his hair started looking really dull from the chemotherapy, I took him to Dr. Judkins to see what kind of support he could be given from a holistic standpoint. Dr. Judkins understood the treatment protocol we were getting and prescribed a probiotic, Chinese herbs and a mushroom blend. Within a month, not only was my dogs coat shinier & healthier, but he had so much bounce back in his step he was acting like a 3 year old again! I hadnt realized how much the chemo was taking out of him!

I currently have 6 dogs and have been involved in rescue for over 25 years. Ive dealt with many vets and vet clinics over the years and can honestly say that Hawthorne Vet is the best ever. Dr. Judkins is a miracle worker. My Boxer/Pit lived to just over 15 and I credit Dr. J with his longevity. He had many health issues but lived happily as long as he did because of the excellent and knowledgeable care from Dr. J. The whole staff is wonderful. They all care so much about animals. I feel as well cared for as my animals.
