February 29, 2012 To all concerned: I am a native of Florence and also a RN who recently had some tests and procedures done at McLeod Hospital. I was on the second floor as an outpatient in Pain Management. When I arrived to the floor, I was escorted to my room and was given the standard instructions to undress and apply my hospital gown. Soon after, the admission nurse arrived in my room to admit me. Then the phlebotomist came and started my IV with fluids running. I give 5 thumbs up for both of these nurses, but this is where it ends. Approximately 2 1/2 hours later, I was taken to the OR to have my discogram done. After the procedure, while we were still in the OR, the "Pain Management” MD, told me he would have a nurse give me some pain medication prior to the CT scan. I was waiting in the hall and the "Pain Management" MD came up to me again and said that he would have a nurse give me some pain medication before the CT scan, but this did not happen. After the CT scan, I was escorted back to my room by a male transporter. He was very nice and as we reached the nurses station, he emphasized to whoever it was, that I was the pt. in room #232. It was exactly 12pm and my dad was waiting in the room for me. The "Pain Management" doctor arrived to my room soon after I was settled and told me again that he would have a nurse give me some pain medication. For the third time, those instructions somehow fell through the crack. After 3 1/2 hrs (3:40pm), all my fluids had finished and I was waiting to be discharged, but I had not so much as even had a nurse check in on me since I came back to my room to recover. As an RN, I removed my own IV, checked my bandages on my back, got dressed and used the bathroom. I then asked my dad to please find a nurse so she could discharge me instead of me leaving on my own and going to administration. The charge nurse was so apologetic and embarrassed. She went and had her nurse manager, David, come up to my room. Of course he was apologetic and made up some excuse that he would not write anyone up at this time, but it would be a learning tool they could use later. As we all know, this starts at the top. It has now been 3 1/2+ hrs since my discogram/CT and still lying on the same gurney instead of a hospital bed, I am now experiencing much discomfort (a pain level of "7"). I asked the charge nurse for some pain medication and she told me that no order had been written. I checked the chart myself and could not believe that the "Pain Management" MD did not write the order like he told me he would, at least 3 times. Rather than wait, 30+ minutes, for the charge nurse to obtain the order, I decided to leave for the comforts of my dads home. My family and I have experienced many hospitalizations at McLeod hospital and I assure you they were not all good. My mom, also an RN, was a cancer survivor for 22yrs and was terrified every time she was admitted to this facility. Some one from the family always stayed with her day and night so that she felt secure and not alone. I am appalled at the nursing care that has been given to me and my family. It is hard to trust anyone, much less someone taking care of a loved one. Between the slackers and the young nurses who come fresh out school that think they know it all….It is scary!!! There is always something we can learn everyday in the medical field. Right now I am learning about herniated discs and spinal fusions, for which I will be having surgery at the Southeastern Spine Institute in early March of this year. C.A.T.

Last night, 3/23/2013, we spent almost 12 hours at McLeod ER. We arrived at 6 pm, waited 7 hrs to be seen. We watched countless people who did not seem to have any illness go in and out all night. When we asked the registration lady what was taking so long she told me that since we had a more urgent illness we required to be seen by a doctor instead of the nurse practitioner like the other people we had been seeing go in and out. Ive never been to an ER where they take the less urgent ppl back first just because they can be seen quicker. That was the stupidest thing Id ever heard. Well as we waited a few more hours my father in law (who we were there with) started having symptoms that were worse and more frequent than when we had arrived. I asked the lady again if he could revisit the triage nurse because of this. The nurse came over and asked what was wrong, said she would find out how much longer it would be and NEVER came back. 3 hours later another lady came to check on us and my father in law asked her again how much longer and she rudely told him "You were already told its because you have to see a dr" and stomped off. The rest of our wait time we watched through the glass as these ladies sat on their butts point at my father in law and whispering to each other, which is rude and unprofessional. When he was finally taken back at 1 am he was put in this ittty bitty room and it was FREEZING in there. I went out and asked the nurse for a blanket and when i went to go back into the room i heard her behind my back "these people need to make up their minds hot then cold then hot then cold" at this point i had to fight the urge to slap the woman. The dr came around an hr later (she was great, nice change) when she left she sent the nurse in to do discharge, it took them 2.5 hrs to bring in discharge papers. I know they werent waiting on anything like lab results and such because out of the drs mouth she already had all that information and she told me discharge shouldnt take more than 30 minutes. Also while we were waiting on the dr to come I went and got my family some dinner since wed been waiting so long and when I came back the registration lady hit me up for some of the food i brought back. Majority of the people we came into contact with were very rude and unprofessional and the level of care was sooooo ridiculous. I imagine if you were there for no serious reason youd be ok but I would NEVER go back with anything that could be life threatening. Also just for the record my father in law symptoms were very much in line with a possible stroke. And we still waited 7 hrs to see someone.

I have had so many problems at this hospital I dont know where to start. The biggest was the death of my father who went in for routine gall bladder operation and ended up dying due to the neglegience of so many people. His cardiologist, surgeon and the nurses. Since there is limited space what actually ended up killing him was being sent home with orders that only said see you DR in 2 weeks. When we got him home on Easter Sunday he aked where his oxygen was, we didnt know what he was talking about, and I couldnt get anyone on the phone that knew, on Monday at being on the phone for hours I find out before he came home Home Health should have been there and set up not just oxygen, but a hospital bed, walker, porta potty, etc, we did not get all this in place until 8:30pm, he went over 36hrs without the oxygen he needed, at 7:30pm on Tuesday he died in the ER.There is much more to this story but just let me caution you do not leave your loved one alone for a sec and question everything they do, look at the paperwork before you go home if something doesnt seem right ask about it. My dad was not given the care that McLeod loves to boast about in their pretty little glossy magazine, there are no smiling Drs. and very few smiling nurses, I wish everyday my mother would have sued that hospital but my family are just not that tyoe of people and she didnt feel she could go through something like that, it is a shame that this hospital gets away with all the unethical, illegal, fraud that they do.I will submit another post to explain my meaning behind that.
