My boyfriend and I recently moved to the area. He took our dog to the Animal Hospital of San Antonio to get his yearly vaccines as well as get evaluated for a cough that he had developed. My boyfriend did note that Dr. Smith was very kind and caring as she evaluated our dog for over an hour. A lot of tests were done and Dr. Smith gave him the preliminary diagnosis of allergies. She instructed us to give my dog Benadryl and wrote a prescription for a "beta- blocker called enalapril". My boyfriend and I are both clinical pharmacists and enalapril is not a beta blocker, it actually belongs to the class of medications called ACE-inhibitors and is a medication used for high blood pressure, heart failure, and impaired kidney function. Just before the visit ended, my boyfriend verified that was the correct medication she wanted to write for and questioned the veterinarian. Dr. Smith replied "no this is a beta blocker". Once he came home, I called her to verify once more and to provide a little bit of education and she still insisted she was correct. So please, please, please, verify what medication is being written for your pet before giving it- look it up, ask a pharmacist! Regardless, giving a beta blocker for allergies will constrict the lungs and actually make it harder to breathe- hence why albuterol (a beta agonist) is prescribed for asthma. So again, I really urge you to be carful at this clinic. Rather than double checking and looking up the infromation, Dr. Smith insisted this was the best therapy. If I gave this drug to my dog his blood pressure could have dropped, he could have been dizzy, and may have even fainted. If this really was a beta agonist it would have made his allergies worse and made it hard to breathe! Please get a second opinion if coming here.

i just moved to san antonio and went to find a new vet, most of the ones i found were rude and overpriced, after meeting dr. smith i was thrilled! i finally found someone who cared about my animals as much as i did! the staff was kind and knowledgeable, there was an adorable chihuahua who greeted me upon arrival, i was told his name is odie and that he was one of dr. smiths success stories, he apparently was almost dead when his owner dumped him on her and now he is such a happy, sweet dog! i was so impressed with all of the services from the hospital that i have recommended them to everyone i know! i have had vaccinations, dental cleanings, several surgeries, and boarding at the animal hospital, each time i have been there has been a wonderful experience, i feel like family!

I visited the Animal Hospital of San Antonio for the first time today with my 10-week-old puppy. Everyone in the office was initially super friendly, and my conversations with them over the phone were warm and informational as well. Although I feel that my puppy received the attention and care she needed in a state of urgency, the doctor we saw came across as unnecessarily condescending and critical of how I care for my pet. I understand the need to ensure that pets are being well cared for, but there are more appropriate ways and I have done nothing wrong. I did not appreciate leaving the office feeling inadequate to care for my fur baby.

This is in response to another persons review. She talks about the vet giving her the wrong medication for her dog. She says she brought her dog in for a cough. The doctor prescribed enalapril, calling it a beta blocker. While she is correct that it is an ace inhibitor, not a beta blocker, but I dont believe the doctor prescribed the wrong medication. If the dog had a cough that caused a bad enough congestion that got into the heart, lungs, etc then a prescription for enalapril would have been appropriate.

Although my friends are gone, all three were treated and boarded with Dr Smith. Office staff was family centered. Dr Smith put all three of my friends to doggie heaven in their old age. If her office were closer I would run to her again... however I live about 15miles away and am looking for a vet closer. AhHa, I will call her office. 5STARS from three and parents of the past. Dr. Smith and her staff have been extremely helpful in helping us with our pet . Whether just routine shots or a serious issue that required surgery, she was informative, kind, sensitive to our needs and helped us make the best decision for our dog. There prices are reasonable and the service is above an beyond. I couldnt be happier with the care our pet received and I highly recommend them!
