I have 2 dogs: Black Lab (3.5yrs) and Rottie (1 yr). My lab seems to be accident/illness prone. After paying thousands of dollars in vet bills to my previous vet with my previous rottie/shepard mix - $40 for an office visit and a minimum of $300 for teeth cleanings, I decided to try Banfield. I was skeptical but the shot/maintanence plan made financial sense. In the back of my mind I kind of thought, "If I need any real vet care I can fall back to my vet". After one accidental poisoning (still dont know where she got into it and almost lost her), a mysterious hip injury, numerous ear infections, and several minor "not looking so goods", here I am three and a half years later. AND as of a year ago Ive been driving in from Wimberley. I have a lot of confidence in this vet clinic. I have received care from "Dr. Mike" Dunavan, Dr. Reesor, and Dr. Tooley. All three have different strengths and expertise. Dr. Mike has many, many year of experience and was able to determine and treat an organophosphate poisoning (rare) in time to save my then 2 year old Black Lab - Bonnie. I can be a difficult client. I ask a lot of questions, I read and research about my dogs, and I take an active role. Do the three vets always remember my dogs names? No. But they do have a comprehensive electronic medical history and they review it each time before treatment and they obviously care about my dogs. My one frustration has come from front desk client service workers who come and go. Dealing with their "newness" can be frustrating. However, I really like the extended hours. I would pay for these vets even without the discounts. I am thankful these vets are available with such a great medical plan.

Let me start this by stating that is 100% my fault that after the vets at Banfield did not do their job I foolishly brought my dog back ... My Basset hound puppy was brought in for a routine neuter. The staff fitted him with the wrong cone - he was able to lick the wound causing an infection that led to blood and puss pouring down his legs. I rushed him for them to fix the problem. After paying for everything the staff noted it was their fault (no refund or care for the pain and discomfort they caused my dog but a "oh sorry). After that I was given the wrong medication and the wrong treatment causing me to bring him back in again for another procedure (this one was covered by Banfield). Since the 3 procedures I have been given 4 different recommendations for how to care for my dog - all different and all in some way wrong. They all preach they love animals and want to provide care but the reality is that the team of vets there are junior at best - even a vet with 30 years experience can be junior and Dr. Andrews is junior from her advice to how she communicates with clients. DO NOT send your dog or cat here. You may get good service but at some point you will get burned and by you I mean the animal you love so much.

Nice doctors but if your dog has a serious problem, go somewhere else. My puppy had parvo and I didnt realize that. I took my puppy in there and they bled me dry and didnt tell me there was an option for CareCredit. I spent over $1000 and they gave me incorrect information about parvo and inadequate treatment. They also did not insure the safety of the other animals against parvo as my dog puked at the register and they did not warn the other customers or immediately clean up the mess. I couldnt clean it up because I couldnt put my dog down but I did warn the other customers to steer clear. The next week my other puppy, who had just had his shots, got parvo next and they would not even see him. I found out about Austin Pets Alive and took him over there. They charged me $20 for the parvo test and $150 for all the treatment to take home and administer myself. They gave me accurate information about parvo and a lot more medication than my other puppy had. He recovered much more quickly than the first puppy did because of it. Then I found out about CareCredit and got $500 credit but Banfield wouldnt take the credit after the fact. We cannot eat with a $500 CareCredit card.

A copule of years ago, as a proud new owner of my first rescue dog, I took Marie to Banfield assuming they were professionals who would treat me well. After all, theyre in a major national chain pet store. That has to buy them some credibility, right? Turns out I was wrong on all counts. Not only did the vet grossly overcharge me for the checkup tests and "special ear cleaning formula" for $45, they also misdiagnosed my sweet Great Pyrénées Marie with heartworms. They told me there was nothing I could do until the condition worsened, at which point we could give her medication. I spoke with the Animal Trusteed of Austin that said this is not true and there are (although difficult) means of obtaining heartworm medicine. Fast-forward ~2 years. I take Marie to a proper vet in town who redid the tests and found she didnt have heartworms. I had a very poor experience at this store. Even if it was an honest mistake, the "Sell Sell Sell!" mentality of lack of knowledge around treatment options make this place a NO-GO. Austin is filled with vets that care about you and your pup, so why go to the one that doesnt.

I used to take my cats to a vet in my town but I did not like him. I switched to Banfield/Sunset Valley several years ago. I have never had anything but good experiences with them. The veterinarians are compassionate and work with me to find ways to keep my five cats healthy without costing me a ton of money. All the vets there are great, but Dr. Reesor and Dr. Dunavant (aka "Dr. Mike") really go the extra mile, answering all my questions and making sure I understand what I need to do if they send my cats home with medication. When one of my cats became ill last year, Dr. Reesor was very upfront that they probably would not be able to save him. She explained what my choices were, so that I would be able to make an informed decision about whether to spend money on treatment or just have him put down. I opted to have her try to pull him through, knowing there wasnt much of a chance. She did her best, but it was his time. A few days later, I was very touched to receive a sympathy card from all the people at the clinic. I wont take my cats anywhere else.

I have been taking my dog to Banfield for the last 7 of my dogs 13 years. They have always been helpful with vaccinations accurate treatments. Recently, I had to put my elderly dog down. I had the best ever experience with the staff. First of all they did not have an appointment available when I called, but they took me at the time I requested. They did not try to talk me out of my decision even though my dog could still walk on his own. They gave him a thick blanket to lay on the cold floor. They answered my questions, put him to sleep in under a minute, then injected the medication to stop his heart. It was fast and painless. The staff was apologetic, caring and professional. They even offered for me to check out from the exam room, prior to euthanizing my dog. This was my first experience to euthanize an animal. Ive heard stories with bad experiences so I was a little scared but everything went smoothly.
