On Mother’s Day this year, my husband and I rescued an English mastiff mix (8 weeks old) from a rescue. On Monday, we realized that Nash had diarrhea. We spoke with the rescue and she offered some possible solutions. All parties involved thought that it may be due to the change of moving and a new family, plus the use of a different food. On Thursday, I called Kempsville Veterinary Hospital and explained what had been going on. They were not able to see Nash until Saturday morning at 10:15 a.m. My husband and I still had not realized how sick our poor pup was. That morning we were unable to get the fecal sample they had requested. The lady at the front desk said we could bring a sample in when we were able to get one. I knew that they were able to retrieve one even if we had not brought one in from previous experience, so I asked if that was still possible. She seemed displeased that I had asked but this was a huge part of why we had made the appointment. The doctor came in, pulled his skin up on his back and watched it slowly drop back into place. His helper tried to get a fecal sample with a swab but was unable to, so then he tried. Again, he was unable to. Still he took the swab to the back to look at it under a microscope. Within the next 2-3 minutes, Nash had pooped on the floor and gave them the sample they needed. 2-3 minutes later, she arrived again, scoped Nash up in a towel and said they were taking him to do blood work. When he returned, he informed us that the good news was that Nash had tested negative for the parvovirus but that Nash was a very sick puppy who was severely dehydrated, severely anemic, and that his recovery could go either way. At that moment I broke down again and began to cry. I turned around so that the doctor did not have to witness it. He apologized to my husband and explained that they would give Nash some fluids under his skin, an antibiotic shot, and dewormer even though he hadn’t seen any worms. When he returned with Nash, he told us that when he first saw Nash he thought that he wasn’t going to survive but now he was optimistic. What had changed from the few minutes prior where he had stated it could go either way? What had occurred to make him change his mind? He provided no answer to this. We packed Nash up and took him home. But, he only seemed to get worse as the day went on. Sitting at home with Nash in my lap, too weak to move around, I began to question Kempsville Vet, asking my husband if he thought Nash was going to make it and what he thought of the doctor’s prognosis. He whole-heartedly believed that this doctor’s story had changed because of my crying and had never actually believed Nash would survive. After that, I knew a second opinion was very much needed. Once at The Cove, these amazing veterinarians and assistants were up front and honest about Nash’s condition even when I cried. They believed that it was a false negative test for parvo and offered us our options. They stated that had we not come in for the second opinion Nash would not have made it through the weekend. After admitting Nash to the emergency hospital, his condition improved dramatically. Nash was at The Cove for 24 hours before coming home. His second parvo test came back negative as well. While we are not sure what ultimately almost took our sweet pup from us, we do know this- the Cove saved our puppy unlike Kempsville Veterinary Hospital who sent us home with hope but were ultimately going to let us helplessly watch the new addition to our family die. After going through this scary event this weekend, I would just like to say thank you Kempsville Veterinary Hospital for being unprofessional, inconsiderate, and inconsistent. It is because of your horrible treatment of my family and I that we sought a second opinion and it is because of that second opinion that Nash is alive today. I truly hope that you begin to make some changes to not only the rude women working your front desk but also to your bedside manner.

Dr. Spencer is the greatest! Excellent bed side manor. My dogs were in an accident and Dr. spencer went out of her way to help me, at the time they were not set up for surgery and recommended a few places that could help immediately which made sense, but after further discussion we decided to clean my dogs wounds extensively and bandage them and make sure there was no infection, they sent me home with medication (antibiotics) . The reason I say this is because I had read other reviews where kempsville vet recommended other vets to some customers, but if they are not set up at the moment for emergency surgery doesnt it make sense to send you and your pet where they can be treated immediately. In my case we could go home and come back first thing in the morning for surgery. Dr. Spencer did the surgery on one that needed it and did an excellent job, I have had animals my whole life and experienced many Veterinarians. Kempsville Vet is a cut above the rest, I have been with them two years now and couldnt possibly see going anywhere else. If you are looking for a Veterinarian clinic/hospital to call home, this is the place, the staff is also very thoughtful and attentive, I recommend Dr. Spencer !! Shes the Best... my dogs will make a full recovery because of her.

We recently discovered that my dog had a cyst under her armpit. I am very attached to my dog so I immediately took her in. We had the cyst removed by Dr. Uvaer and she was fantastic. She took the time with me to answer any and all questions I had and was very good with my girl. We got the results back that it was a mast cell tumor and Dr. Uvaer called me herself and chatted with me for a while on the phone. I am so pleased with my dogs care and how caring Dr. Uvaer was. I will never go anywhere else and I am so thankful that I discovered Kempsville Vet Hospital.
