I had a horrific experience at Edinburgh Animal Hospital with my five pound dog who was suffering from diarrhea. The staff was not able to obtain a fecal sample to determine if the diarrhea was due to bacterial overgrowth. Despite that, Dr. Mapes prescribed an antibiotic, which I thought was a very bad idea because I believe the diarrhea was a side effect of her other medications, not a bacterial overgrowth. When Dr. Mapes spoke to me, she did not disclose the specific antibiotic. I had to ask. She prescribed metronidazole. Unfortunately, I have had a number of very bad experiences with metronidazole, including one dog who had neurological side effects from the drug. I will never, ever use that drug again. Dr. Mapes did not seem open to discuss my objections about metronidazole. Yet, I was sent home with it. It is my opinion that Dr. Mapes did not listen to my objections and would not provide another option. Based upon my dogs history, which Dr. Mapes was not familiar with, nor inquired about, prescribing metronidazole would be a huge mistake. I cordially objected to that antibiotic, and it seemed that Dr. Mapes did not have the time to discuss a better option. She also claimed that no other antibiotic can be used to treat diarrhea - I do not believe that is a true statement. She did prescribe a probiotic. However, I am already using one. So essentially I left with a sick dog, and an extremely poor treatment plan. She never discussed a bland diet or any other approaches. i came in with a sick dog, and left with a sick dog, the only change that occurred was to my bank account. It is my opinion that Dr. Mapes did not discuss the issues with me, and did not disclose the specific treatment plan until I asked. The whole appointment was a waste of time and money. More importantly, I left with a sick dog without a viable treatment plan. The reason I saw Dr. Mapes instead of my regular vet was because she was not in. Even in the worst of circumstances, the most dire of emergencies, I will never return. What occurred at Edinburgh Animal Hospital would never have occurred with my regular veterinarian. Upon returning home, I was angry and disgusted. I called their office to speak to the office manager but she had already left for the day. (My call was placed before 4PM and they are open to 7PM.) Their solution was that I could return the metronidazole for a refund. Clearly, they totally missed the point. My dog means the world to me. I am in a great deal of distress because as her advocate, I sought intervention for her, and was unable to get the help that she needed. The following is most troubling. All along I communicated that I feared that my dogs diarrhea was due to taking a prescribed drug, Vetmedin, when she did not have a full stomach. (Occasionally she refuses to eat after taking her meds.) After returning home I googled Vetmedin and it stated: " Discontinue giving Vetmedin and contact your veterinarian if your pet develops; poor appetite, drowsiness, diarrhea." Why is it that Dr. Mapes didnt know this and advise me to discontinue Vetmedin??????? Instead, there was no treatment plan that included discontinuing Vetmedin, only a prescription for a very strong antibiotic when there was no evidence that she had a bacterial overgrowth. My dog has a pacemaker as well as a serious heart valve defect. She is a five pound dog whose health is already compromised. What occurred today was unconscionable.

I switched to Edinburgh Animal Hospital a couple of years ago from another local vet whose prices had gone through the roof once they opened at a new location. It was no longer affordable and Edinburgh was recommended to me by several friends. The very first visit, which was a yearly checkup, cost a third of what I had been previously been paying for annual visits. I was also told by them (after reviewing his records from the previous vet) that my dog was being vaccinated for several things he did not need to be which was really upsetting to say the least. Not only were we being overcharged, but my dog was being injected with things he did not need. My dog is a senior and I have been very happy with his care at Edinburgh. They do not try to remove every lump and bump, etc. because mostly they are fatty tumors and not harmful. I really like that they do not want to do anything to him that they dont have to because they dont like to put senior dogs under unless absolutely necessary. He has, in fact, had to be put under to remove a severely infected tooth and they ran blood panels to be sure he could undergo the anesthesia and surgery. Their prices are very reasonable and I really feel that they care about whats best for my baby, not their pockets like a whole lot of vets these days. I do not have him see one doctor in particular. We have seen several and I have all been very happy with all of them. I highly recommend them.

The staff was great about getting an appointment quickly for my sick dog the same day and then was able to schedule my other three together for their annual exam that was overdue the next day. Dr Campbell was gentle and straight forward with his evaluation of my sick dog and his no nonsense approach allowed us to formulate a treatment plan that would work for all of us. Dr Shane saw the other three for their exams. This is our first encounter with Dr Shane and he also was very gentle and kind. My dogs seemed to relax to his touch, Always a good thing when you have three dogs in the exam room. We have been coming to Edinburgh Animal Hospital since we moved here in 2010 and have never had a bad experience. The staff and Doctors have always been kind, gentle and very helpful.

I love this vet. They are like family, I never like any of my animals are just another patient to them. One of dogs had puppies and Dr. Campbell acted like they were his own. They also treat my 17 year old cat and they are keeping him alive so we can enjoy our time with him. They are so helpful and if they cant do it they recommend vets in the area that have the same quality as them! i had a bunny and they do not care for bunnies but the recommended a vet that was awesome! They even cared for my hamster as best as they could and they took a quick look at my hedgehog, even though I knew they dont normally care for them! They will always be my number one vet and I will go to them as long as Im in this area! Love yall!

My lab/retriever mix was diagnosed by Dr. Campbell with a cruciate tear, which another vet had also diagnosed the same issue. We scheduled surgery with Dr. Campbell and it was done within 2 weeks. The surgery cost less than the estimate they gave me for it. (which was a pleasant surprise) He is always kind and knowledgable and answers my many questions. My dog has had several follow up appointments with Dr. Campbell which he did not charge because they said we were still checking on the cruciate repair. He did a great job and the practice is professional and pleasant in their demeanor, despite the fact that they get very busy at the front desk. I highly recommend this practice.
