My mother was in Regional for the better part of 5 months after a heart valve replacement surgery. At the 19th week, after fighting constant set-backs including pneumonia, respiratory failures, etc., she decided "enough-was-enough" and asked to be taken off support. Nurse Dorothy --who shares my moms name -- was gentle, caring and informative of the next steps. First they gave her a cocktail of Fentanyl and Lorazapam. Next, when she was peacefully at ease and sleeping, the respiratory nurse came in and over the next hour slowly weaned her off the ventilator. At this point, although erratically, mom was breathing on her own. About an hour later a technician turned off her pace maker.Over the next 30 minutes we watched her skin tone fade to a grey pallor then she took one last breath. My father, brother and I at her side. During the entire five hour period Dorothy her intern and several doctors came in often to make sure we were comfortable. I cannot tell you how important that meant to my family. It was with love and deep respect for the patient and family that the staff wanted my moms death to be humane, pain-free and dignified. I was blessed to have such a beautiful and caring mom. Regional has many great resources to offer. They have access to the skill and equipment that those in severe respiratory distress need. Their professionalism is impressive and it is obvious that they care about their patients and make a great effort. The facility is well appointed and clean. They have a good nurse to patient ratio and response time is usually pretty good.
