Im one week post-op from Valley Medical and had to bring my mom to this ER because she suffered a mini-stroke at work. This is an abhorrent place, especially when compared to the care I received at Valley Medical. Dont bring anyone you love to St Josephs ER. Firstly, the nurse was curt & rude, which is unhelpful. Empathy is this thing that is useful. I witnessed the entire reception staff ignore a crying woman doubled over in pain for hours; no one ever came near her to comfort her or anything. I heard another person tell a crying, distressed, pregnant woman that if she wasnt going to be "checked in" that he had to make room for other people. They literally make patients sign HIPPA in the waiting room while reciting personal info within earshot of everyone, and have stations right in the waiting room where medical professionals loudly discuss patient history and issues. They make every person do blood work before ever seeing a doctor. My mother, who has an MD, challenged them on this and they said its because they were going to do a CT and needed to check liver stats. But what, every patient gets scans? Im not lying, every patient in the waiting room was called for blood work before seeing a Dr. Theyre just trying to squeeze as much out of your insurance and pocket as they can. When you see news articles about hospitals who charge $400 for a bag of saline when they only charge $37 in France and cost $1 to make? Theyre talking about hospitals like this. The hospital smells very unclean and appears to have poor ventilation. The security staff is more decorative than functional. Im actually concerned for the quality of care my mother will receive here. This facility needs a management overhaul and empathy training for its staff. Also the blood work nurse actually asked my mom, who is of color, if she "worked at all". Just no. Ugh, this place. 4 hours here and still my mother has not even seen a doctor. She did get an IV put in though, so another few hundred they can charge.
