My experience here was terrible. No one there seemed competent in the least. As a matter of fact, if the staff had not been positioned behind the counter, I would not have believed they worked there. They had little to no knowledge about what was covered under insurance, what cost what, or in fact what was in their own store. I was left to wander around the store looking for frames and was ultimately pointed to a bin of drawers full of haphazardly thrown frames that looked like something kindergarteners had been playing dress-up with and told that that was what my insurance would cover. Indeed, everything else in the store (nicely displayed) started at $200 and went over $400. There was actually a rack toward the back with the name of my insurance company on it, but I was told that they did not sell those, they were not allowed; they just "had" them. ?? The entire experience made no sense whatsoever. I finally simply picked out the cheapest frames I could and left. But not before hearing the staff talk disrespectfully, mockingly about people they had just gotten off of the phone with. After my experience, I wanted to only have my RX so I could have glasses made else where. After calling several times (the phone almost always goes to voicemail, which informs you that it is full), I was told that I would need to fax a signed permission form to release my RX to my husband, who would be picking up my glasses. A few days later, when I called to ask about the form, I was told it was *not* necessary and that it should be fine as long as I said it was ok. ? The only positive portion of the visit was from the actual doctor, who seemed to do a thorough exam and also did not mind answering questions and explaining exactly what was going on with my eyesight. Though very young, she was entirely professional and respectful throughout the appointment. However, I was advised to only get reading glasses. And now I am quite sure that I need full progressive lenses or else contacts for a full range of vision. So I dont believe my visit there helped me in any way at all. However, it did cost me quite a lot of time and money.

I had no issues with the physician herself. I felt like she was very professional and thorough. The prescription she wrote for me was accurate and is the only reason why Im giving two stars instead of 1. The staff is where I had the issue. They all seemed very incompetent. One employee on the day of my exam had friends come in and hang out for the entire two hours I was there. So in between "helping" customers he would be goofing off with his friends. When I came back to pick up my glasses, to which I never received a call they were ready I had to call myself, I asked if they would be able to tighten them because they felt loose. The girl looked at me like she had never heard of anyone asking that before and turned to someone else behind the counter and asked if she could do that. The lady asked why did I need them tightened which I replied because they felt loose. She huffed and handed them off to another girl and asked if she could tighten the ear pieces. That girl went to back, cam back up to the counter and handed them to me and they felt the exact same. I dont believe they tightened them at all. They also tried to say I still owed a balance which I told them I paid it all so they had to double check their system and saw that yes I had paid in full. They also didnt offer me a glasses case which is supposed to come complimentary with every pair of glasses. They just did not seem very knowledgeable at all. Im just not sure I would ever go back to this store or recommend it to anyone else

Worst eye care center I have ever been to! For some reason this awful place is ALWAYS packed and ALWAYS understaffed! If you go here you will most likely have to deal with a fat lady named Susan. She is a fool if I have ever seen one! They promised that it would take 2 weeks for my glasses to come in. Ok, no big deal, except for the fact that it took 2 months! And the lenses are the cheap easy to scratch ones. Susan kept informing me that it was the people at the labs fault and she never once tried calling them, she just kept saying that this was normal. I will never go to this place again! The staff sucks and so does the merchandise! Watch out for that Susan! Shes a fat old b*#&*!

Ive been doing business with Schaffers for 3-4 years now. This will be my LAST year for certain. It took them 4 times to make my sons prescription correctly , all because of their incompetent staff. We see another optometrist for our eye exams, and get frames and lenses at Schaffers. I only found out that my sons glasses were made incorrectly at our follow up visit with our optometrist. If it werent bad enough that this happened to my son, the same thing happened to my daughter as well. I found out at her yearly exam that Schaffers left the prism out of her glasses that I paid for. To say the least I have had it. Stay far away from this place!

Horrible. The only reason I give it one star is because the eye doctor actually gave me a good exam and was professional. The staff however acted as if it was everyones first day. Totally incompetent and lost. The cheapest pair of glasses were 120.00$ just for the frames and my contacts were $77 which was more compared to other places. They never called me when my contacts came in and I had to go up there to get them and when I did I had to wait almost 30 minutes with no other patients in the building and the guy at the counter just set in the back as if I wasnt there. I would rather pay the out-of-network price at another company

Very unprofessional about appointment times. I hurried up from work to get there 5 mins early and they didnt take me in until an HOUR after my appointment time. The older lady kept saying that she was short handed and had been dealing with one customer since I walked in. They asked me to pick out glasses, I politely asked for my prescription and walked out. I was not about to wait around for another hour or two until they took care of the other customers and they accommodate me! I would rather go to walmart or costco, their service is way better than Schaeffer...

While several of the helpful staff know the insurance aspects well, I will NEVER go back to see the eye care provider. She is very young, a fairly recent graduate, and she unfortunately 100% misdiagnosed my eye condition, after causing much despair with her incorrect disgnosis. I promptly went to Birmingham on my own for second opinion with Opthalmic Oncologist. He apologized profusely that an eye care provider would give such a wrong diagnosis! Needless to say, I do not recommend seeing the eye care provider at the Whitesburg location at all....
