As a triathlete, Ive been unwilling to accept the fact that my knees are no longer those of a 20 year old! Dr. Afra performed a miracle and turned back time by giving me my knees back! I consulted with several orthopedists around town. All they wanted to do was cut on me and schedule surgery-- how utterly disappointing. A good friend of mine recommended Dr. Afra. She found him to be polite and respectful. So I gave him a shot. WHAT A GEM! I did my research on him. Great marks all around. After visiting with him, I found Dr. Afra to be very knowledgable, a real expert in his field. What I came to understand after my first visit with Dr. Afra far exceeded what I had learned from all the other doctors combined. As a life long athlete, present triathlete, with a college degree in exercise physiology I know a bit about the body. He is one of the only physicians I know who can speak intelligently about alternative methods of treatment (Eastern medicine, acupuncture, homeopathic, natural remedies, etc). After explaining my condition in detail he took the time to go through all the various treatment options. He made sure to tell me that if I had any further questions, I could always email him! Apparently he knows triathletes well enough to know Id probably have follow up questions.....and he was right. When I emailed him with further questions, he responded with brochures and science articles to help me understand my options. WOW! Talk about going the extra mile. Im back to my normal intense workout regimen. I owe it all to Dr. Afras top notch care. Dr. Afra is by far the best surgeon in San Diego - hands down!

Wow, just wow. Given the caliber of services described on the website I am in absolute shock at the experience I had trying to make an appointment for help with a broken wrist. While in pain, I call, am told to call back in 10 minutes, they are on lunch. Call back in 30 minutes, same story. Get put on hold, describe my situation with my wrist, and that I am looking for my next step and get a very sharp tone about "she cant help me with that cant tell me what to do..that is basically my problem." I honestly cant believe this just happened. I dont often write reviews, but it is not acceptable for someone in pain reaching out for help to have this sort of experience. I called despite seeing some other reviewers mention this issue, and I really should not have spent my time doing so.

I am extremely grateful for Dr. Afra. I have had a bout with carpal tunnel syndrome in both hands/wrists the past 4 years. Dr. Afra has performed surgery on both of my wrists and has been so warm and caring throughout my entire experience with him. Just to give you a hint of how personable he is as a physician, my 3 yr. old daughter has had to go with me to a few appointments and she looks forward to seeing Dr. Afra every time. She even wanted to be a doctor for Halloween this year largely due to how much she enjoys him. Thank you Dr. Afra for not only being a competent and skilled surgeon/physician but for making yourself a part of each one of our lives and for caring about us wholly not just about our physical ailments.

I have been a patient of Dr Afra for nearly 3 years, and find him to be an outstanding physician. When we first met, I was immediately put at ease by his kind and gentle demeanor. He explained my condition with patience and clarity. He was quickly able to diagnose my problem, and offer me options for treatment. I particularly appreciate his willingness to "partner" with his patients, and make joint decisions. His expertise is obvious, and his confidence contagious. He is also consistently responsive to questions and messages, which eliminates the need for unnecessary office visits. If only all of my physicians contained these personal and professional qualities. I wish I could rate him at 10 stars... Many thanks Dr Afra!

Dr. Afra is a knowledgeable, patient, and compassionate doctor. He spends time explaining (multiple times, if necessary), and listening. Dr. Afra educates patients so they can make informed decisions about what is the best course of treatment for them as individuals. Dr. Afra is conservative in his treatment of injuries and if indicated, supports alternative treatments. Dr. Afras office is a breath of fresh air not only in their treatment of patients, but when you call you reach the office directly, - no "press 1 for...." I highly recommend Dr. Afra for his medical expertise and approach to patient care.

Dr. Afra was an extremely attentive and compassionate doctor. He saw me for a work related injury to my ankle and knee. He did all that he could to facilitate various treatments for pain and inflammation and exhausted all possibilities available through workers comp. insurance. He also provided me with various options to look into after my insurance would no longer cover particular injections and treatments. Dr. Alfra was also always accommodating, supportive and positive. I appreciate that he took his time explaining my injury and my treatments and that he was always willing to answer any questions I had.

I am very impressed with Dr Afra! I have seen him for 2 different orthopedic injuries and not only is he extremely thorough but he takes the time to explain all of the different options available. He incorporates what works best for each patients lifestyle into his plan of care. Dr Afra is compassionate yet professional and has a wonderful bedside manner. He personally followed up with me to check on my progress which is almost unheard of these days. His entire team follows his example including his PA Robert who is excellent. I highly recommend Dr Afra!

I was under Dr. Afras care for bilateral epicondylitis (tennis/golfers elbows) due to a repetitive strain/use injury from my job. I was leery that I would not be seeing a top orthopaedic doctor. My experience was quite the contrary. I received excellent care. He explained my diagnosis and prognosis thoroughly and allowed me to take my recovery at a pace I was comfortable with and truly cared about my well-being while undergoing treatment. I highly recommend him.

Though Dr Afra seems to be very competent. I have been unhappy with the lack of customer service his "front desk" has demonstrated. Both in person and over the phone have included interactions that didnt indicate that they cared about my business or even wanted to help me. I sort of felt like I was bothering or inconveniencing them. Its too bad they dont match the Drs level of concern and care.

I was refered to his office by my insurance and Im glad I was. I injured my knee on the job site February 2014 and Dr. Afra was amazing through the whole process. He really cared about me and my injury and made sure I was well taken care of by him and his assistants. They really are a great team and though its never a good experince to be injured, I am glad I met Dr. Afra and his team.

We came to Dr. Afra for a 12 year olds swollen ankle and Dr. Afra clearly explained the diagnoses and explained the possible resolutions, we choose the cast on his recommendation. He was open to any type of questions and answers the sincerely and honestly. He provided good guidance after the cast came off. We would recommend Dr. Afra.
