Both of my dogs see Dr. Clayton, who was recommended to me by a friend whose cat had fairly complex medical issues. I had taken my dogs to a few other vets, including in Lafayette, Bloomington, and a couple other places in Indy, but I have never found better care for them than with Dr. Clayton. And while Carter Vet Center is a little more expensive than some rural or low-cost vets we have been to, they are also a lot cheaper than places like the VCA. I would say that their prices are actually rather cheap for the level of care that the animals receive. The overall experience is so wonderful that I have kept going to Dr. Clayton even though I drive further to take the dogs to the vet than I have ever driven to take myself or my husband to a doctor. Dr. Clayton is very knowledgeable, keeps up on the latest veterinary news and research, attends professional conferences, and really takes the time to talk with me. He has us work together to find the right treatment course for my boys, taking my opinions and knowledge of my dogs into account before making decisions. I am impressed by how much passion he shows for his work with the amount of continuing education he pursues and his willingness to do extra research into an animals individual medical condition and needs. I wish I could find a doctor for myself who is half as dedicated and knowledgeable as Dr. Clayton is. We have been there for nutrition issues, general well-checks, surgeries, lab work, and dental care. My dogs are both around 8 years old and have been Dr. Claytons patients for about 4 years now. I have always had very pleasant experiences with the office staff, great experiences getting appointments quickly and at the times that work for my schedule, and very compassionate advice over the phone when needed. The whole office does excellent follow-up after a pet has a surgery there (and for no additional cost!) and it is obvious that they really care about the health and well-being of the animals.

BE VERY WARY OF THE HIDDEN/UNSPOKEN CHARGES. I have no doubt that the vets are competent at this facility - the cost and how they are incurred is my issue. My dog had to been seen for an emergency situation and then had to have a check up a week later. I paid a substantial amount for his care for a ruptured anal gland the first emergency visit and was told there would be no additional charge at the next followup visit. I also was not told and only found out after asking alot of questions, that if I did not see the same doctor that treated my dog initially at the follow-up visit, that a $35 fee would be incurred due to the fact a different vet would be unfamiliar with the situation and would have to READ and acclimate himself regarding the previous vet visit (so I guess paying someone $35 to read a chart is an acceptable charge to them) - again, nobody told me this up front and I only learned of this ridiculous charge after much discussion with the receptionist during the first initial visit. At the follow up visit with same vet, he scraped some scabs off my dogs rear end and flushed the anal gland - all done within 10 minutes (even though I waited 25 minutes for the vet). So I go to check out and then am told by the receptionist that there is a $62 charge! I indicated that I saw the same Dr. and thought the follow-up visit was just that a FOLLOW-UP visit and I wouldnt be charged any more money. I guess because the doctor flaked off some scabs and cleaned up the wound area it costs $62 to do so. BE VERY WARY of this place - they are not at all up front about costs, just do procedures without explaining to you that there WILL BE a cost to do so. In all my past years as a veterinarian practice manager, I have always coached my vets/staff to openly discuss costs BEFORE conducting the procedure - this place keeps it on the hush hush and I just think that is ethically wrong.

My beloved Great Dane, Barley recently became very ill. I brought him to Carter Veterinary, and I am SO glad for it. In the course of the week I probably dealt with every Dr. there. And I did not feel the slightest bit shuffled or neglected as they were all incredibly caring, professional, knowledgeable, and gracious. I had been to another clinic when Barley was a pup, and I was turned off by the cold and seemingly unaffected manner of the staff and veterinarians. My experience with Carter Vet was the complete antithesis. Ultimately, I had to say goodbye to Barley. I feel that everything that could have been done was done and under incredibly difficult circumstances. It will be some time before I can open my heart to another companion, but I have no doubt where I will take my dog in the future. I want to also mention specifically the last doctor who cared for Barley. I believe it was a Dr. Clayton? He was so gracious and kind under the worst possible circumstances. I cannot thank him enough for making an unbearable and devastating moment more comfortable for all involved. I will be forever grateful for the love and care that was given to my beloved and sorely missed companion. Thank you so much.

The essential VET if you care and love your pet. My 85-year-old mother had to have teeth removed from her Italian Greyhound. Most of the bleeding stopped, but one tooth continued to bleed. Dr. Carter ran tests and all kinds of screening panels. He even called a VET INTERNIST to go over everything. As it turns out, the infection in the one tooth was much deeper than anyone could have anticipated. He gave him antibiotics, re-packed the tooth in question, and kept him overnight. HE went above and beyond anything you would expect a medical professional to do. The next morning he spoke with my mom 3 times and with me once to assure us that everything was fixed and MarcoPolo (her dog) was eating and could go home. The entire staff, from the folks who answer the phones on up to Dr. Carter himself have always been concerned, knowledgeable and courteous. His practice, on a scale of 1-10, is an 11. Thank you for caring so much. Without her dog, my elderly mother would likely go into a decline in her own health.

Five stars arent enough. I cant even begin to describe how wonderful Dr. Clayton and the staff are at Carter Vet. I came to them to get a second opinion after my previous vet failed to mention a decent size lump on my dog at her regular checkup a couple weeks prior. Turned out my 7 year old dog had cancer, and a difficult one at that. Throughout the entire process from diagnosis to surgery to post-op care, they showed more compassion, caring and knowledge than Ive ever experienced with a vet - and Ive been to many over the years. Dr. Clayton and this team truly go above and beyond; you are not just a dollar sign walking through the door.

My wife has used both Dr. Carter and Dr. Clayton(at this clinic) for over 10 years. They always explain what is going on with our pets in a very plain and common sense manor. They are very flexible at getting us in when we need to and there rates are reasonable and appropriate. A couple weeks ago we had an emergency at 5pm, and they were able to fit us in immediately. This saved us 100s of dollars versus having to go to a emergency vet hospital who was not familiar with our pets or medical history. Everything Ive seen is great.
