I had been going to Dr. Hope Short for about 2 years and until now had little to no complaints about her or her staff. Me and my husband are from Tyler, but had not lived here in sometime due to him being in the military. We lived in Colorado during his years of active duty. My husband has been deployed twice and injured on multiple occasions. For his brave acts he was awarded two Purple Hearts. I am one of the lucky wives who got her husband home in one piece physically but not so much emotionally. After a long drawn out process my husband was medically discharged from the military so we came back to the place we have always called home. I have seen Dr. Short for a number of things throughout the 2 years of being her patient; so naturally when my husband started having problems with what we think is a hernia I called to get him an appointment with Dr. Short. My husband has PTSD and receives continued care with a psychiatrist at the VA. When I called to make an appointment for him I asked if they accepted his health insurance through his work and they in fact did. Dr. Shorts staff explained to me that Hope had to approve any new patients, but seeing as how I had been and continued to be a patient at their office it would be no problem getting my husband approved to be a patient. She went on to ask a few questions about the reason for him needing to see the doctor as well as his past medical history. I explained the possible hernia being the reason for him needing to see the doctor, but that he did have PTSD that was being treated by a military doctor. I also asked that when Dr. Short came back with the answer of wether or not he could become a patient to call me and not my husband. I guess I felt like if the answer was no I would be protecting my husband from feeling like he wasnt accepted at certain places because of his issues and his on going struggles. She stated she understood and would get back to me in the next day or so. The next day as I am taking my lunch at work my husband calls me explaining how Dr. Shorts office called him and told him due to his PTSD, Dr. Short did not think he would be the right fit at her office. In that moment all I could say to my husband was "this is not your fault, people are ignorant and they run scared from things they dont know or understand" Not only did the staff at her office not call me instead of my husband, but the words they used to tell my husband that because of his PTSD he was not a fit for their clinic awakened an anger inside of me. How can people say they support our men and women protecting this country, but when those same men and women ask for help back on U.S. soil in their own home town; people turn away from them and look down on them like they are damaged goods. Needless to say when Dr. Shorts office called to remind me of my next appointment, I told them that I would never be returning to their office again. If they thought they were too good for my husband then why would I want anything to do with them. The truth is my husband is too good for the ignorance that flows in that office and even though what they said to him didnt seem to effect him, I know it chipped away at a small piece of him somewhere deep inside. If you are a TRUE supporter of our men and women who fought and continue to fight for this country, then perhaps you should find a doctor who feels the same way; not one who turns her back on them at the first chance she gets.

Dr. Short and her nurse practitioner Geri Ann are excellent, and so are their staff! They go above and beyond to care for all of their patients needs..... I also have something to say about the two, negative one-star reviews that are listed here on Google....... The reviews are not a fair representation of Dr. Short of Short Family Medical group. My husband is a Veteran and I am former Law Enforcement - our entire family sees Dr. Short and she will not turn away or discriminate against Veterans in any way. Initially, seeing such a review from a member of the local Veteran community bothered me - so I asked Dr. Shorts practice manager about the situation and got an honest answer................. The original intent of the new-patient appointment was confused over the phone because of all the details given regarding the individual being currently treated for PTSD by a VA psychiatrist. To the office staff, the PTSD was the most prevalent issue discussed over the phone (not the hernia) and thus it was easily misinterpreted as to why the individual was seeking an appointment with Dr. Short. In following Privacy law, the phone number attached to the inquiry by Dr. Shorts staff was the phone number of the individual himself, not his wife (although she did requested to be contacted personally)........... When the individual was contacted, it explained to him that Dr. Short was a primary care physician and could not legally treat psychiatric cases, but that she would be happy to refer the individual to a recommended psychiatric physician. Dr. Short and her office were in no-way discriminating against a Veteran with PTSD, but simply stating what they legally could and could not treat............... So after hearing Dr. Shorts offices side of the story - it appears to me that instead of correcting the miscommunication on the phone right then and there by clarifying that he wished to see Dr. Short for a possible hernia and NOT for PTSD, the person (and his wife) took offense that Dr. Short conveyed that she could not treat him for PTSD, and then went online to write as many negative reviews of Dr. Short and her staff as possible on Facebook and Google in an effort to smear their name............ The negative reviews are the result of an emotional reaction to a communication mistake conveyed by Dr. Shorts staff. I highly recommend Dr. Short and Short Family Medical Group to anyone who is considering their office, and urge you try out their office for yourself. No one is 100% perfect, and Dr. Short and her office dont deserve to be smeared publicly like that based on an unfortunate communication error. To me that speaks volumes as to the character of the people who wrote the negative reviews in the first place, and the opinions of people like that hold no salt with me, nor should they with you.

I went to Dr. Shorts office for a routine illness. Needless, to say I paid my co-pay and was able to see Dr. Short. She didnt shake my hand because she said that I looked like I had "cooties." I then explained my symptoms and asked her about possible testing. She stated that there was no need for testing. She then said that she was going to put me on antibiotics and walked out. She didnt tell me what kind? or what her diagnosis was? Just left. I was at the office because I had real concerns about my health. During the visit she kept referring to me as "kiddo" not sir or Mr. but "kiddo." I then asked her office for an excuse for work. She provided me an excuse for that same day. Needless to say I took off 4 days total of work for a possible bacterial infection and what I felt was bronchitis. My work then asked me for the letter. I provided the letter and they requested more detail from Dr. Shorts office. I went back on 3 separate occasions and Dr. Shorts nurse came out to tell me that there policy is to only provide a one day excuse from work. They stated that I would have had to have a fever to come back in and get another excuse for any additional days off. When I requested to speak directly to Dr. Short the staff kept treating me like I was a nuisance rather than a paying client. Then Dr. Short peaked out of the door. I proceeded to ask her to give me 30 seconds of her time she frowned as if though I was completely out of line for requesting to speak with her. She stated that she would not sign for me to be excused from work for more than the day that I came to the office. That this was policy and then closed the door on me. Forgive me for saying this but, why do doctors feel like they can look down on people? Im a paying customer with insurance. I have a job and all I was looking for was some empathy and help. I will never return to this office and can only recommend that you seek another general practice. She was out of line when it came to the way she treated me. People must be treated with respect, kindness and love. This office treated me like another number with a $$ dollar sign attached to it.
