Just to start off - Im a full time student who also works full time. My Great Dane was not acting like himself over the weekend - lethargic, not interested in eating, etc. I, like a lot of people, thought it was just a bug or that he had eaten something that didnt agree with him so I didnt feel it was necessary to take him to an emergency center. However, Monday morning (2 days later) when I was getting up and getting ready for school I noticed he was drooling, practically non responsive, and wouldnt move. In trying to help him up I pressed against his stomach and he cried out in pain. I freaked out (thinking it might be bloat) and rushed over to Ashland Vet (without an appointment mind you) with him. Not only did they let me drop him off immediately (as I had a test I couldnt miss that morning) but they even helped me carry him in, all 140lbs of him. When I came back an hour and a half later he had been examined, xrayed, and was already on supportive care. Dr. Campbell then took the time to sit down with me and go over her findings on his physical exam and his xrays/bloodwork. She explained everything to me in a nice and genuine way even though im sure I was asking a million dumb questions. I felt completely comfortable with her diagnosis and the further testing that she recommended, something my previous vet always failed to do. It ended up that my dog had pancreatitis and was pretty dehydrated. I decided to board him there for a few nights so he could get fluids and continued monitoring of his overall condition. He made a full recovery and was back to his rambunctious way by the time I took him home. ALSO, I know for a fact that my dog is more than a handful when it comes to being in a kennel and new places/people and everyone there was great with accomodating and dealing with that!!

I have recently moved to Virginia and had to find a new vet for my beloved kitty. I am extremely unhappy with the treatment that my cat received while getting a checkup at this vet. They really have no experience in dealing with an animal that is obviously stressed from the doctor visit, believing that putting on large work gloves and throwing a towel over the animal will allow them to calm it down. I asked them to let me hold her on the table so that I could keep her calm as the doctor examined her. They stated that they could not allow me to do that because of liability reasons. I then had to sit by while they put on large work gloves, threw a towel over her and wrestled her down onto the table as she screamed and hissed, watch the technician lay on top of my animal pressing her face into the table, and be subjected to my cat looking at me in obvious distress that I felt helpless to stop. I have taken my cat to different vets for several years, and have found several skilled veterinarians that know how to safely handle a stressed feline through grabbing the back of the neck and getting the job done. I have also never had an issue with a vet allowing me to hold my animal while they examine them. I will not be bringing my cat back to the Ashland Veterinary Hospital, and will look for a vet that is considerate of making the experience as stress-free and painless for everyone, especially the animal involved.

We took our cat and dog here for ten years, because of the recommendation of a parishioner. The care was competent but extremely expensive. Lately, we had grown uncomfortable with the recommendations of the head Vet, who wanted to do expensive and, we thought, unnecessary tests on our aging Labrador, without ever explaining the consequences of the results she was getting. The final straw was our request to have her remove a small but growing cyst on our Labs head. She wanted to do aspirations and biopsies, suggested we go to an expensive veterinary surgeon instead, and hemmed and hawed about doing the surgery herself. She also wanted to do x-rays and ultrasound because of a slightly elevated liver enzyme. I called another Vet in the area who had been recommended by a friend. The new Vet saw our dog the next day and operated two days later. Our dog was in and out of the clinic in an hour. The Vet told us the liver enzymes were no issue in a 12 year old dog, and charged us less than $ 100 for everything, including antibiotics. He befriended our dog and gave him dog cookies during the first visit -- something the Vet in Ashland never bothered to do. We will not be going back to Ashland.

I took my brand new kittens to Dr. Mason for a check-up. Having adopted them from the pound, I wanted a thorough examination of each of them. Dr. Mason gave me just that. She was patient, kind, and extremely knowledgable. I never once felt rushed nor was I made to feel stupid because of questions I asked. She and her assistant were quite gentle with my kitties. I left feeling quite certain that no stone was left unturned in regards to the kittens health. Also, the office itself was, hands-down, THE cleanest vets office I have ever been to - and Ive been to several. The office staf were friendly and competent. I truly felt valued, felt my kittens were valued, and am glad to have found a good doctor for my babies. As for cost, everything seemed pretty comparable to what Ive paid at other vet offices. If the prices were slightly higher, so be it. This was the best experience I have ever had with a vet and will gladly pay for such fabulous care. These are, after all, my little loves.

I have an aging lab that has reoccurring UTI...after trying to treat it, and then discovering it had came back, the vet (who I might add is one of the loveliest people you could meet) explained everything to me in terms I could understand and helped me understand what was going on with her. I found the cost of her treatment to be very reasonable, and understood why we needed to do the tests weve done... My dog LOVES coming to the vet now and I sometimes bring her there just to vist. I recommend them to any and everyone I meet. Thanks AVH for all your help!!!!

When we moved to Ashland, we called a few veterinary offices in the area to see if anyone could fit our dog in immediately to look at an injury he received during our move. Not only did they squeeze us in right away, but any time weve needed to make an appointment since weve been able to see a vet quickly. The staff is very friendly, theyre great at putting our dogs at ease during exams, theyre always willing to explain why something is necessary and how theyll proceed, and the charges are reasonable compared to the cost of services at our past vet offices.

I appreciated the care the front desk and assistant staff took with my new puppy on our first appointment! Despite this, the appointment was spoiled when I met the vet on staff that day. I felt greatly judged by her when discussing a condition my new puppy (of 4 days) had. I could clearly hear her talking about me behind the closed door. When I expressed concern your reaction seemed dismissive. I will be looking for a new office to visit and become our regular vet.
