Please note, I am only giving this facility 3 stars because of the Rehab Staff. The Rehab program is very good. PT and OT and ST are really doing a good job. The nursing staff is abysmal and there needs to be some serious changes!!!!!!! My mother is at the facility due to a rather bad stroke, it was a bleed and extended into all 4 ventricles. She has Right Hemiparesis (was paralyzed but is now just really weak). My mother was transfered from the Inpatient Rehab at Virginia Hospital Center (A GREAT PROGRAM) to Burke Rehab. The situation: There is a lack of cohesiveness in the facility. It appears that there is nobody in charge. There is no care co-ordinator that oversees the care of the facility. The rehab and nursing staff do not work together to ensure that patient goals are being followed up on for the nursing care and ADLs. The main doctor keeps himself separate from the rehabing portion of the facility. The CNAs (or toilet, dressing, and feeding crew), are overworked. The ratio of patients to staff is very high. Patients are not gotten to the toilet in a timely manner. Nothing inhibits recovery like sitting in your own feces and urine because the staff doesnt respond quickly enough. The Aides are not consistent in care. Repetition and consistent care helps the person with a cognitive impairment following a stroke. The patient has to re-learn and how can they when each aide does the tasks differently. As for the skills of the Aides.... Sub-standard. They dont know how to do a basic pivot turn with a patient. Most of them have such heavy accents that they are either afraid to speak or cant be understood. SERIOUSLY, this is a HUGE issue. The majority of them need help with their English and basic communication skills. I have seen aides yank on my mothers weak side, be too rough with her weakened side and so much more. Dont get me wrong, there are a few aides that are ok and actually care about the patient but, they cant keep up with the pace. Bathing... A full week without a shower. There was a lack of hot water in the facility during my moms shower time. Lets see... Creative problem solving.... Get the boiler fixed and rotate patients through so that minimum standards of care are met for each patient!!! The Nurses, appear to all be LPNs. Most have heavy accents. I wish that they had RNs, RNs tend to be better at nursing. Some of the nurses are more comptent than others. From what I see, the nurses just pass the medications and do some wound dressing and colostomy bag changing (although they are slow at getting to those colostomy bags). If a patient needs to use the toilet, the nurse usually finds a CNA and wont help the patient themselves. REALLY????????? There is a shortage of staff and keeping the patients waiting for the bathroom is treating them like animals. The Food... A little salty and not enough protein but, its usually decent enough. Cleanliness, the individual rooms and bathrooms are not kept clean enough. I never see them cleaning my moms room or bathroom. I clean my moms stuff from time to time. Aides come to work sick and pass it on to the patients and family members. Why didnt the supervisor send the aide home?? Oh wait, there was no one in charge. The Rehab staff are highly skilled and very friendly. They work hard. I only wish that they had an opportunity to train the aides and nursing staff in how to better care for patients. If it wasnt for the Rehab, I would have pulled my mother out of this facility after the 1st week.

WORST PLACE EVER PLEASE DO NOT TAKE YOUR LOVED ONES HERE FOR THERE SAFETY!!!! My father in law suffered a stroke and as a result was sent here for rehab.. Please keep in mind he has other medical conditions .. the first day he was there he had to go to dialysis they sent him with no clothes .. yes you are reading this correct NO CLOTHES only the hospital gown on it was freezing cold and he only had a thin gown on which by the way when he was arrived to the rehab we provided clothes for him so they could change him when he had to go to dialysis .. also his medication was not there they did not order it till 3 days later .. per doctors orders (and written on his chart) he was not supposed to put any weight on his right foot because it would cause more damage and it was still healing the nurses kept forcing him to put weight and when he said he couldnt they would get mad .. he had a hard time seeing so he would always keep his phone handy to call someone when he needed help so one night one of the nurses turned off his phone so they would not be bothered... upon sending him home Amanda was supposed to have All his stuff ordered like bed, commode, wheelchair, and other items when i spoke to her she said the items are ordered a day after they are discharged .. a few days later she told my mother in law that it was ordered on a sunday 2 days BEFORE HE WAS DISCHARGED .. and told her she didnt know the status and to call herself... when my mother in law calls she is told that they cant cover the items due to the insurance she has and they had informed Ms.Amanda earlier.. Complete lack of care .. they do not know what they are doing at all it is so frustrating to know that they are still in business considering how the do not know how t care for people.. please please find some place better nobody should be treated like ..

As a long time RN, I must say Burke Health and Rehabilitation Center is like no other in the market. I have toured several in northern Virginia and this one is the ONLY one I would choose for either of my parents. When I toured, I asked more about employee satisfaction and turnover. Burke has the lowest in the area in all departments with many nurses and other staff that have been there for over 23 years. I also found it interesting that many of the RN’s in the building began their careers as certified nursing assistants, then moved to LPN’s and are now RN’s. This speaks volumes for growth and opportunity. The management team, starting with the administrator, has been in place for 23 years as well. For those of you looking, there is a direct correlation between employee turnover and quality. Another important area when looking is that the Burke staff are all employed by Burke. Many or all of the competitors I researched use agency or contract personnel for staffing in nursing, housekeeping, dietary and therapy. This is very costly and ultimately these costs are passed on to the customers. These temporary staff members have no” buy in” and do not care about the mission or vision of the company. When you are in the tough position of finding a nursing or rehab facility for your loved one, Burke Health and Rehabilitation Center is a must see! You can see, smell and feel the quality, compassion and dedication of this team. This is not your typical nursing home/ rehab facility.
