Have only been here once so far but was very impressed. The waiting area is so homey and comfortable. When I was there, there was a crackling fire and everything was tastefully decorated. All of the staff were friendly, helpful and genuine. My cat is terrified of people she doesnt know because she was feral. They handled her with care and made her feel as comfortable as possible. Hartwood will definitely be our vet from now on! Update: Ive been back to Hartwood on many occasions since writing the first review. I continue to be very pleased with the care my pets receive. Ive seen two different vets during our visits, Dr.Baker and Dr. Trout. Each doctor is fabulous. They listen carefully to your concerns, spend time discussing your pets problem and simply chatting with you, as though they have all the time in the world. Then they always follow up a day or two later to make sure your pets doing well. In the last few months Ive had several concerns about one of my cats and Dr. Trout was kind enough to call so we could chat about them and to make recommendations. She even gave me pointers on caring for some baby squirrels who were fending for themselves through the past difficult winter. Shes not only an excellent doctor, shes a truly genuine, caring human being. The receptionists, assistants, and tech staff are really top-notch. They are equally as caring and gentle as the doctors. One of the tech staff occasionally cares for my cats and she is equally extraordinary. This is such a fantastic veterinary practice that I feel very fortunate to have found them. I would recommend them highly and without reservation.

Our dog is a 3 year old, 70 lb. German Shepherd/Rottweiler/Foxhound mix that we rescued from the SPCA a little over a year ago. She had MAJOR trust issues with the vet and Hartwood has been amazing about working with us/her. Since our dog can get pretty anxious and fearful, we love that Dr. Baker seems to have a way with her. Vet visits are typically an ordeal, but its getting better each time. They are more concerned that she starts viewing the vet experience as a happy one, not a terrifying one and we really appreciate that. Its comforting how they view the animals as more than random creatures that they need to "get in and get out." The staff really takes their time with each patient. Even after giving our dog sedatives, she can take a little while to let go and fall asleep so the doctor can do her job, but they let us sit on the exam room floor with her with the lights out so that she can fully relax. They are very attentive to her needs. I once called with a medical concern and the staff was more than willing to help me figure out what could be going on over the phone. Their prices are reasonable and the environment is very inviting. The office can get busy but they all manage to keep their cool and make me feel like Im their #1 priority, which is tough to find these days. I have never dealt with any one being rude at Hartwood. I definitely recommend this vet to pet owners in the Fredericksburg/Stafford area!

I recently came across my receipt, where I had boarded my dog, almost a year ago, for a little over a week, at Thanksgiving. First of all I DO NOT like the way the pricing is set up. I think a day is still considered 24 hours, yet I left her on Wednesday and picked up a week later on Friday. Looks like 9 days to me, yet I was charged for 10 days.I was given a blurred excuse, something to do with when staff changed shifts. Made no sense then and even less now. My dog has always had a dry skin problem. I have had her to several vets, changed her food, had her on allergy medication, nothing seems to work. While at Hartwood, she began to scratch, they claimed she had blood on her foot and treated her, to the tune of an EXTRA $100.00. I believe I signed a form, stating she WAS NOT TO BE TREATED, UNLESS I WAS CONTACTED.They SEDATED HER W/O MY PERMISSION, put a bandage on her foot, TWICE--$20.10 EACH TIME--ARE YOU KIDDING ME?? NO ONE bothered to call me!! To say the least I was STUNNED AT THE BILL when I picked her up. While waiting to pick her up, I saw a man come in to pick up his dog and he was sent into SHOCK, when presented with his bill!! Not the first time I have seen this!! No wonder they say the amount spent on pets goes into the BILLIONS, they charge whatever they want. and get away with it, ALWAYS PUSHING THEIR PRODUCTS AND SERVICES AT A HUGE COST TO US.THIS BUSINESS NEEDS TO BE REIGNED IN.

The staff is very friendly but I am giving them one star because 3 hours after leaving the office my new kitten was almost dead. Fortunately, I was able to get her seen by a neighboring vet that afternoon and she was quickly (and correctly) treated. I work in the medical field and had questioned the vet about what I saw as concerning neurological behavior, the vet felt this was "normal kitten behavior and would improve once the kitten fell off the sofa a few times". She did not feel it warranted further evaluation. Less than 30 minutes later the kitten had deteriorated greatly, demonstrated unusual lethargic behavior for a 6-7 week old along with rigidity. Having just left the vet office I decided to get a second option and was glad I did. The kitten did pull through but was very sick for the next 10 days. One of the differentiating diagnosis was rabies (this was a rescue with wounds on initial evaluation) which fortunately was not the case but Hartwood had failed to even verbalize this consideration. Considering the public health risk that is scary to me.

Fantastic Vet! As a relatively new bird owner, I was overjoyed at the time given to me and my parrot. We were running late because I could not get this newly rescued bird into a carrying cage. They were so understanding when I called them and told me ti get there when I could. I did and although I was a half hour late and they had moved on to other clients, they still got us in a room very quickly! (Within 5 minutes) I thought for sure it would be a ling time waiting but no so! Dr Jewett came in and talked briefly with me and got the vet tech started on vitals and such. By the time the vet tech was done, Dr Jewett was back and ppured so much information into my head it was amazing! Everyone is so nice and caring! Not only did I feel like my bird was well taken care of but I left feeling 1000% more confident in being a bird companion! The prices are reasonable and they seem to go out of their way to make sure you dont pay more than is necessary. I appreciate that with 7 birds and a dog! We have moved all the vet records here! Highly recommended!

After reading the other reviews I cant believe the negative comments. We have known Dr. Jewett for over 20 years. We first met her at another practice where she took care of my Westies. One was an epileptic and when we boarded her Dr. Jewett and staff made sure she was in constant care while there. When Dr. Jewett opened her practice we followed her. I live an hour away but wouldnt go any where else. When my Westie went to the ER, due to health issues, Dr. Jewett kept in touch with the doctor there. When Abby died Dr. Jewett was just as upset as we were. Now she takes care of our elderly lab and rescue mix. The staff at Hartwood is wonderful and take time to listen to any problems or concerns with your animal. When lab work is done they call with the results. They notify you via email when your dog is due for an appointment. I have never had a bad experience here. Sometimes the wait is long but it is because they take time with their patients and the owners. I cannot say enough about this practice!
