As I write this I am not writing to complain about the front staff because I have always been treated kindly and efficiently. My problem lies with the doctors and their inability to diagnose a physical condition when I first purchased her as a puppy. Like a responsible pet owner I took my border collie puppy into the office the day after I purchased her to make sure everything functioned properly. After a quick look-see the vet told me she looked happy, healthy, and that I could begin pursuing my goal of placing her in canine sports. I followed up with the same vet twice for her puppy vaccines and came in another time to see Dr. Larrick. Each time they sang praise on what an alert and physically capable puppy she was. Fast forward two months. I contact a trainer who begins to express some concerns partway through our first training session about how her ‘front legs don’t look right’. She then gave me the number to her vet and I called and made an appointment with them. Upon seeing the other vet he stated that her front legs seemed deformed and after a few x-rays diagnosed her with elbow luxation—crooked elbows complete with crooked elbows and hardly any cartilage. I was devastated not because I would have to end competitive training with her: that I took her to Powhatan Animal Hospital on 4 separate occasions and saw 2 different doctors and no one had said anything to me?! It concerns me that my trainer recognized an obvious growth deformity at such a young age by my vet did not?! I have since discontinued going to the Powhatan Animal Hospital for medical treatment for my animals. If they can’t recognize an external physical problem how will they be able to diagnose an internal one?

DO WHATEVER YOU CAN TO AVOID THIS CARELESS VET. My dog was seen at the Powhatan Animal Hospital in February of 2016, and that will be the last time that they will ever be allowed to touch any of my animals again. When I was in the office, I told them that my dog was limping. After multiple tests and hundreds of dollars, I was assured by the vet that my dog was perfectly fine and that I had nothing to worry about. My dog continued to limp after this visit, and I eventually went to another vet to get a second opinion because he could barely walk. The second vet, armed with copies of the scans from Powhatan, knew immediately that my dog had torn his ACL and meniscus. After this visit, I called them Powhatan and confronted them about their lack of diagnosis and to this day they have refused to admit that they did anything wrong. Due to their lack of diagnosis and judgment on my pet, his left leg has suffered irreparable damage. He will permanently have issues because of this vet, even though he had surgery to repair the damage. Given the other vet options in the area, I would do whatever you can to avoid this place.

They let our dog die in their waiting room. We called this morning, described our dogs symptoms to them over the phone & they told us to bring him right in because it was an emergency situation. When my husband got there they told him that the vet that was there had just graduated from school & was not qualified to perform the operation, but that the other vet was on his way. An hour and a half my husband waited, repeatedly going to the front desk staff and telling them that our dog was getting worse. Three other people offered my husband their appointment times, but the staff would not take our dog back and look at him. When our dog stopped breathing & my husband started screaming for help they finally took our dog back and told him there was nothing they could have done "because they didnt have to time to diagnose him." If they would have told us they didnt have time to see him when we originally called we would have taken him to a different vet and maybe he would still be alive. Maybe he wouldnt, but at least he wouldnt have died by choking to death on his own vomit in the waiting room.

Edit: I have come back to this page, and Ive seen recent reviews stating that they had a sub-par experience. Thats very unfortunate, because I still firmly believe they are the best veterinary office Ive been to, and Ive been to tons. I LOVE Dr Menasco! She always takes the time to really assess my dogs and their needs. Ive also always had a spot on estimate for services whenever I request them, unlike one review I read. I drive over 30 minutes to come to this vet, and it is absolutely worth! The pricing is well below anything I can find locally, and I dont ever feel like Im giving up quality for a cheaper bill. My dogs are family and they deserve the best care. I truly believe they receive that here. The ONLY complaint I could ever have is long wait times on the phone. I know Ive been forgotten on hold before, because I called on another phone, while still on hold, and gotten what I needed, while still on hold on the other line....... that is absolutely it! Best vet Ive ever been to! They have VERY reasonable pricing, and all of the veterinarians rock!

These are great people. Not only friendly, listen, and relate understandable issues and resolutions. Banfield charged me 350 bucks to do blood work when my dog encountered a sick raccoon for one visit. Thought kitah (dog) was a goner. Nehow the animal hospital charged the same for a 5-7 day/nite stay w parvo, and doing the blood work. Wat a diff. If u think that is worth the saving then u can stand to b patient when u call n interrupt other appointments. The vets know how serious n issue is, but we dont so b patient and they will answer emergences asap for real ones but like this never again author and my cat going bold b/c of a hair loss scale scaping disease (reoccurring summer skin disease), they got me in within 1-two hrs just showing up. Gave my cat the shots n went on. And have done this three times where they got my in for emergency. But he has a point cuz i will warn u, they are popular n BUSY!!! so an appointment takes about two weeks. Theres one office of them and 10 banifields w/n 15 miles. S0 b patient if u want to use them.

Dr. Pinkleton and his staff were very attentive to our cat Sammie in a time of great need. Sammie was seen at the clinic for a large flesh wound on his arm, the skin was sewn together as best possible leaving a small area where the skin would not stretch to heal on its own. After a few weeks passed the wound would not close fully due to his activity and I took him in to be seen for a follow up. There the doctor recommended a skin graft, this procedure required his arm to be sewn into a small incision on his stomach. If successful it would mean there would be living skin that would attached to the arm and allow for full recovery. The skin graft was successful and here is Sammie post several months post surgery and is happy and pain free thanks to the amazing staff and doctors at Powhatan Animal Hospital. I would highly recommend them to anyone. Their extensive knowledge of even the worst cases makes me trust even more in the small ones. Thank you for your service and dedication to serving our extended family.
