I have been taking my pet here since I first rescued him when he was just three months old. I just moved here and didnt know anyone so I chose this vet based on their online reviews. The place is clean and nice looking. My first issue with Atlantic Animal Hospital came when my puppy was young but had a persistent cough. I brought him in to the vet and they showed me two videoes of what they thought he might have. I instantly said no to both videos and said thats not what my puppy has. I sent two videos to them of my puppy coughing and they prescribed meds for what they thought he had. The meds didnt help. I had a gut feeling that something was wrong and I shouldnt let it go. I told the vet I wanted an X-ray. They told me that was unnecessary but they would do it. He ended up having a bad infection in his lungs and parasites. If I didnt persist in getting the X-ray done then things would have been much much worse. He was out on the correct meds and gained over 20 pounds in 3 months. The next series of issues began when I started my dog at their doggy day care. He came home with fleas after a full day there and I had to pay for that day and the flea treatment. The next incident happened when I came to pick up my pet and he was soaking wet. I wanted to know why he was soaking wet since this never happened before. Of course the receptionists were rude like they always are but I just wanted to be proactive in knowing about my animals care. Last week he came home with two cuts near his groin. I know dogs play and things happen but whenever he is supervised it had never happened before. This made me question how well they are watching the dogs. The latest incident was the last straw. I am still in shock about how rude I was treated and how completely unnecessary it was. I knew I was running late, I never have picked up my dog late before, so asked if he could stay longer. They said yes but I will have to pay a late fee, I agreed. I then get a call at 4:53 saying he has been set up for boarding because they close at 5. I said I didnt know that was how they did things and my friend would be there at 5:05. The receptionist on the phone couldnt have been more rude. I was shocked. My friend got there at 5:05 and the employees all gathered in the parking lot said he couldnt get my dog. They stated the doors were locked. He asked to speak to whoever was in charge and they said they werent there, which was a lie. I got there around 5:15 almost in tears because my dog was basically being held against my will. Dr. Rohr let me get my dog. The whole ordeal was completely dramatic and unnecessary. They acted as if the doors were locked and they couldnt open them. They told me he was in a kennel that I would have to pay for. He ended up being in a small cage in a room by himself. I am so disappointed. My family has spent thousands of dollars there. They acted as if my dog was an object. I love my dog and paid a lot of money for what they call excellent service. I am never taking my dog back there and regret getting upset over a receptionist who was so rude. Part of your job as a receptionist is to answer the phone nicely and know I am the customer. I suggest if you cant do that, then maybe being a receptionist isnt the job for you. I would not recommend this vet or the doggy day care.

Dont lose your animal like I did. I took my cat, Hallie, here because my husband said wonderful things about this vet. I wasnt sold on my current vet, so why not. Well my first appt after a physical, I decided to get her teeth cleaned in Feb 2015. Up until this point, Hallie a 9 year old tabby had been perfectly healthy all her life. Hallie ended up flat lining on the table and they were able to resuscitate her. Happy to have her back, the vet gave me one, maybe two, antibiotics to take home in case of infection. A few months went by, Hallie slowly began to lose weight, vomit and not eat. I took her back to the vet in July and Hallie had lost a third of her weight. I paid for an ultrasound and blood work. The vet could not come to any conclusion besides late stage Lymphoma (which wouldnt make sense since it was a rapid decline) or IBD. Hallie was put on an anti-inflammatory to treat IBD. One year since her teeth cleaning, Hallie was on her death bed having lost half her initial weight and barely eating. To try anything, I suggested an antibiotic to the vet. Of course, after consenting to long extensive tests suggested by the vet, that still found nothing. The antibiotic turned things around for Hallie. She perked up and gained some weight back. This led me to believe Hallie had an infection and the vet never suggested such. I had to diagnose my own animal. I believe, Hallie had got an infection the day she went in to get her teeth cleaned. The antibiotic and anti-inflammatory bought Hallie time. The infection had already done the damage to her body for an entire year before getting treated. Hallie made it one more year until Feb 2017. She didnt have Lymphoma lasting 2 years with those symptoms plus an antibiotic wouldnt do anything for cancer. I believe, she had infection in her intestines and in the end couldnt eat anymore. Maybe, if the vet would have suggested an infection and antibiotic from the beginning (July 2015), she might still be here. I would not recommend this vet to anyone.

I just moved to Wilmington 3 weeks ago, and prior to our move we lived in Raleigh where I worked at a couple animal hospitals either part time or full time as a technician for the last 8 years. So needless to say I was a little nervous about taking my dog somewhere I had never worked and to a vet I didnt know personally. My dog and I treat our fur baby just like a regular child and we had been talking about finding a new vet in the area but I just couldnt decide. Well this past weekend and into Monday he would throw up every time after he ate and so we knew we needed to get him checked out. My husband said that Atlantic Animal Hospital was recommended by several people at his work and after reading the reviews I decided it would be worth a try. I called to get an appt but they did not have anything that day but offered to let me drop him off, which I preferred not to do and so they set me up with an appointment for the next day but I asked them to call me if they had anything become available that day. I was very happy when they called me to say they had an appt open up that afternoon. When I got there everyone was very nice and the place was very clean. We had to wait but only about 5 minutes or so which was good. The technician and vet were also very nice and thorough and tried to make my dog more comfortable when he was scared. The only small negative I have is that they did not split the Famotidine pills that they sent us home with, which wouldnt be a problem if they were not so tiny and hard to split at home without a pill cutter. All in all a great visit and will be taking Walter there again for his needs and hope to see Dr. Karessa Schaffer again as she was great. Also saw lots of dogs playing outside in their doggie day care and they looked like they were having a blast and we are hoping we can get Walter set up for some play dates.
